Project Q is the upcoming streaming only device that will allow you to play games installed on a PlayStation 5 remotely.
It has not been announced if the handheld will allow streaming of games from the cloud and is rumoured to cost between £250 - £300.
Will you be picking one up later this year?
Absolutely not. If it's a streaming device that means I have to be near high-speed wifi to use it. For the same price you can get a steam deck which can play thousands of games.
Yeah it’s why I’m on the fence about a Steam Deck. I’m stuck between a Project Q and gaming PC or just getting a Steam Deck with a dock and monitor so my gaming PC is like a Switch. Is that possible with a Steam Deck?
Yes you can plug the steam deck into an official deck or just a USB hub with hdmi. It will then display on TV and allows controller input. So yes, it works like a switch in that respect.
Yes it is possible. You should look at the ROG ally since it runs Windows which may be more to your liking
The rog ally has had micro sd issues, make sure that is resolved if you choose one over the steam deck. The deck boots right to steam so you don’t need to touch the Linux os unless you want to branch out.

It's SteamOS (Linux based) with a compatibility layer for Windows games.

Is it possible to install Windows 11 on it and use it has a hybrid gaming PC/gaming handheld/everyday PC if it’s connected to a dock with a monitor and keyboard & mouse?
You don’t have to install Windows. The Linux OS can boot into desktop mode and it functions just like a desktop PC with the Dock. I have it hooked up to a monitor and a TV via separate docks and the monitor dock has a mouse and keyboard. It works great.
I’ve never used Linux before. I’ve only ever used Windows and macOS. Also can the Steam OS play non Steam Windows games. Could my daughter play Roblox, Fall Guys and Sims 4 on it?
The SteamOS Linux install is skinned pretty similarly to Windows/macOS. It’s not much of an adjustment unless you need all kinds of custom software. I can’t say for certain about those games but you can definitely run Windows games in desktop mode. I’ve played several of the Assassin’s Creed games and run a few emulators in Desktop mode.
From what I understand the driver support is pretty poor under Windows. That may have changed since I last looked but that appeared to be the state at and around launch of the Deck.
You can, but the usability does suffer a bit. I would honestly just keep SteamOS on it as you will get better performance even with the compatibility layer, and you don't really have to touch the desktop if you don't want to. The Deck boots directly to steam.

It definitely is. You can try out the default OS, which functions just fine as a full PC in desktop mode or as a gaming console I'm game mode. You can switch between the two modes as much as you want.
But if you run into game compatibility issues or just cannot get used to Linux for whatever reason, you can install Windows on it. Again, you can use it as a full PC with Windows.

The PS Vita is still to this day my favorite handheld and sony killed it. Then they come out with this and wonder why Nintendo has always been on top for handhelds. This product is honestly a shit in the face of PS fans and I'm genuinely concerned for the well being of anyone dumb enough to buy this. Now that I got that rant out of the way.
Nah I won't be buying one. I really wish sony would make a new handheld like the vita tho instead of a tablet with a controller glued on
I completely agree. I too still regularly use my Vita. Considering it’s an 11 year old piece of hardware it still feels up to date.
I just plugged in my Vita for charging after a long time, wasn't expecting to see it mentioned right away.
I guess I am in a huge minority of people who is interested in it. Though the caveat is that it must be $150 or under. I am not willing to spend $250+ on such a device.
As for why, the convenience. For me, this is the addon that makes PS5 a hybrid console, like a Switch.
Yeah, I’m interested as well, I’m just a bit hesitant because my experience with remote play has been so-so. It works well for turn based games but for any type of game where you need to react quickly to things it’s a little frustrating to use. Hoping that having a dedicated machine to do it and not using an app would help though. It would be nice to be able to play anywhere in the house, my PS5 is in the basement and sometimes I’d just rather be in a different room. Sitting in a dark basement all day can get depressing haha.
I agree. Not great for fighting games or quick action games. But there are tons of genres that work great with it. Like turn based RPGs, farming games, many indies and so on, and hopefully it will work better on a dedicated device.
So far Slay The Spire is the main thing I’ve used remote play for haha, perfect game for it.
Oh yeah, it's a great game for that. Also great for Dragon Quest XI, X-Com 2 and Octopath Traveler 2 (haven't played OT2, but it's also turn based so will work great), also used it for many indie games, like This is the Police, Wytchwood etc.
No, I've still got my original PSP and it's homebrewed. Also got a switch.
With the way remote play works atm no chance. Seems the tech is not there yet for play without massive input lag and latency
Which is a shame as it doesn’t need to be that way. Remote play from my PS4 Pro to my Vita is almost perfect. I don’t think I’ve played Fall Guys on my PS5 for months. It’s like it’s made for the Vita. Plus the OLED screen is gorgeous.
I feel like Sony should do a Xbox series S type of move but with a handheld that can play all the PS5 games instead at lowered graphics. At least that's what I'd want. Switch has shown people are more than fine with even 480p resolution and sub 30 fps and low settings when it comes to portability.
I’ll take lower resolution any day if it means I can play AAA games on the toilet.
Yes it is amazing. And 40 hz is something I opt for so frequently even if the game can output 60 just for the battery life. It is really impressive how it's turned into a really nice middle ground to 30 where it makes 30 feel rough.
I'm pretty happy with the Steam Deck not only as a way to play my pc games locally, but it's also very easy to set up and stream games from your PS5, game pass, or stream from your gaming pc. Sony's concept isn't bad, it's just inflexible and in the age of full fledged handheld gaming pc's starting at $400, doesn't make a ton of sense for me.
Probably not, but I think if people could get it to work with PC for game streaming, it'd be even more enticing so that you can use it for both PS5 and PC. Maybe someone like Valve will work with Sony.

Yeah, pretty much. SteamDeck can basically do whatever any PC can do.
I'm trying to think what would make Project Q more enticing than it being just a device that's locked to PS5 only, lol. If Sony released PC software for streaming to it, it would up the appeal quite a bit.
I already have a SteamDeck and stream to a phone, so I'm not in for a Project Q but I can think of some friends who'd probably get one of it had functionality outside of only the PS5.
Chiaki is the one they use and I think it works on Linux. Streaming (even locally) kind of sucks so I don't use it, but I see it mentioned all the time.
I could see choosing this over the steam deck if it was like $100, but if it's $300 I don't see how you don't get to $400 for the Steam Deck instead. You'll probably want to add storage eventually, but even if you stuck to small indie/2D stuff that will fit in 64GB, that adds a huge amount of value.
It was recently on sale for $359 too and all models can have the storage upgraded, so I think the cheapest option is the best one to get and picking up a 512TB or 1TB drive to upgrade it.
In terms of cost effectiveness yeah. I don't regret the 512 at all, though. Etched glass blows antiglare screen protectors out of the water.
2TB is getting real close to the price I could justify. I'm just tightening my belt for other bigger ticket stuff.
I'm expecting my next big ticket purchase to be Deckard if it ever comes out. That'll be my entry into VR. I'm keeping eye an Deck compatible storage prices too. Hope storage keeps dropping.
I want the Apple Vision Pro lol. It's a chunk of change, but the amount of tech they put in there is stupid, and ideally I'd get in some development to be on the ground floor when they make a more affordable version.
VR is nice. Skyrim was mind blowing. It just takes up too much space and where I have space isn't where I use my computer so I fell off it.
I'd like to say I'd get a Vision Pro when it's cooled off and maybe pick it up used but I wonder about the creation process. I think I heard about something with scanning the face when ordering so is it meant to be form fitting? I guess maybe I can get it used and have it adjusted/be scanned for a replacement padding.
I have to think there will be some method of scanning to replace the back at some point. While they'd obviously love it if everyone got their own, I can't imagine they think it's realistic enough that they'd try to force your hand and pass up on the software sales of multiple users on a device, especially when they can't make all that many.
But worst case you can probably get a third party, not custom fit option at some point.
I'd love the vision too, but I'm going to wait for the vision air after couple generations haha. By then I'm sure VR will be absolutely amazing and blow out the first Gen vision pro and hopefully make it look ridiculously bulky by then and be a much lighter sleeker headset.
I'm guessing the "cheap" version will be significantly cut down. If you actually compare the tech in it to the rest of the space I think they're pricing it pretty damn aggressively. There aren't other options with just the resolution, but when there are they're going to be $2k+ on their own. The resolution is the biggest thing I've been waiting for before moving from my vive. It makes a huge difference.
I'm guessing they'll be best in class at low latency full quality passthrough for a good while, too. Nothing else out there is close to that. Add in how much more powerful it is than the other standalone options and Apple being miles ahead of anyone else in terms of AR development tools (solo developers can genuinely make AR stuff right now that works on the phone), and I'd really like to take the plunge. We'll see how my self control works in the mean time and whether I can actually be there to pull the trigger right away, but there's nothing out there comparable to what it is.
I use Chiaki4deck to play golf/adventure/strategy games. The input latency is less forgiving in racing/fps/survival genres.
Even phones can do easily with Steam and then just get a controller and a controller mount. For the price that is being asked of project q and not even being able to play games natively the phone and controller route is way I'd go instead dropping money on that. Way too much with the options available now with handhelds that are full blown computers.
Oh, I agree. I do this with a phone, clip, and Xbox controller already. I just think hearing it could have other uses outside of just the PS5 would be good for sales -- but I'm thinking that won't be a feature and it'll require some ingenuity to make it work for other host devices.
Given that the Deck can run games like Last of Us and Spider-Man I wonder why at the price Sony is asking they aren't just going into a fully portable PS5 handheld. Switch and Deck has shown handhelds are one area where people are way more forgiving of low resolution and performance. If Sony priced the device like $100 more and with how parts in pc handhelds now are better than what the deck came with they could put out something nice.
I'm waiting for a Steam Deck with an OLED. That's my choice of handled.
Why would I drop £250-300 on this when I could pay £100 for Backbone One, and use remote play on my phone.
It will really depend on its full function. I hope what they have shown is not the end of the product because as it stands now, no. I can't image the price point being low enough to justify a purchase.

Just seems way behind the available options already. Just the deck and ally have more viability not needing a console and not doing that PS5 to cloud to "Q" thing. Strange choice.
I want one. I have a PS5 and find myself not using it due to it not being portable like my laptop or Switch. It would have to be a cheaper price though to justify spending.
I think with it just being streaming and since I’ve not heard of being to load onboard games I’d rather have a steam deck or ROG.
Going to come down to <=$200 price point and inclusion of HDR screen that gets fairly bright. I can already remote play on my steamdeck, but the 720p non-hdr screen that isn't super bright and no cool haptics and triggers, are the only drawbacks
Last playstation console i bought was a ps2. I missed some awsome exclusives, but dont think ill get one. For no particular reason either.
If you want to play the exclusives you’d be better off with a PS5 and not streaming them.
I love the idea of a handheld device to play my games on the couch, in bed etc. which is also the main reason I own a Switch. Seeing that this will be streaming only I have some concerns about the gaming experience. Based on my remote play testing at home, I can’t image how this will be a nice experience in the current state. Let’s see and hope for the best.
I had such a bad remote play experience with my Vita that my trust in this plummeted. Only if I have the chance to try it before and the price is low enough....maybe.

You can already stream games to a tablet using an iPad, PlayStation controller, and game streaming service of your choice. Way more practical than buying a dedicated appliance.
I don't understand the point of this thing. For the same price you could just buy another telly for a different room and move the console, it's not like it takes much effort to unplug two wires. I honestly can't think of a single scenario where it would be useful to own one.
I probably would agree with you before but I got a Steam Deck and it’s been amazing. Games that aren’t too intensive can play on the handheld and anything else streams from my gaming PC. Sony should have made a new Vita that competes with that. Instead this seems to be streaming only.
I get the appeal of the Steam Deck, especially for people who travel alot, though I personally wouldn't get one.
But this has to be on the same network as your ps5 doesn't it? So the only time this is ever going to be useful is if your partner or something wants to use the main TV and is more expensive then just buying a litte monitor or something for your bedroom, so what's the point in it? The ps5 isn't exactly heavy or awkward to move like my gaming PC is.
If it could also do cloud streaming I could see this being a good budget option for people who can't afford a PS5. Also people who don't necesthave their own TV: teenagers, college students, people living with roommates, etc. It would need to be probably $100-$150, plus a subscription. As much as I hate subscriptions personally, I could see that doing well.
Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be the case. This looks like it's going to be an extra, expensive, niche accessory marketed towards wealthy people. But... Wealthy people already have home theaters.
If this is really local-only, and can't do anything other than PS5 streaming, and will be $200-$300... Why not just get a Retroid Pocket 3+ for $150? Or an AYN Odin? Or even a Logitech G-Cloud that can at least has the flexibility of Android and can run some things locally.
And then the Steam Deck. I do the same as you: mix locla with streaming gameplay. I even stream from my PS4/5 with Chiaki sometimes. For $400 I feel like I'm getting 3-4x more functionality from the Deck, at least. I appreciate the Q will have a 1080p screen, and maybe some Dualsense features, but I don't think that's enough to sacrifice that much functionality at this price point.
I recently tried playing a game on an OLED Switch to compare it to the same game on my iPhone/Backbone combo. The game ran and looked better on my iPhone even though it was running through remote play.
I think I am in the minority of people who is actually interested in this device (in theory)… I just think it looks silly. Somehow the third party Backbone is more visually appealing than the Project Q.
No way in hell would I waste my money on this.
If it ends up having cloud streaming and Wi-Fi Direct being a connection option I can see it working. But £300 (if true) is way too much. £150 - £200 and I’d seriously consider it.
