The world had peace for 30 minutes.

No. You see Twitter was keeping them contained. This is like the power going out at Jurassic Park.

Arkham Asylum grid failure

I'll celebrate when no one considers this to be news.

I assume we're in a similar boat so let me assure you: no, you won't - because we wouldn't even realize it happened.

Only after s few months one of us will recall this thread and be like "oh, yeah. Twitter. Seems really dead finally. Good."

And to be clear I expect they person to be you because my memory is awful.

I still can't believe he nuked the Twitter brand. It was like the most valuable part of the platform. X is such a dumb, generic nothing name.

Well, now you can tweet wherever you like and don't have to invent a silly new verb for every new platform.

I like referring to it as xitter, pronounced "shitter". What were once tweets are now steaming piles of xit. Or someone taking/dropping a xit.

X-crements

It's going to be so easy for him to turn that x into a swastika in a couple of years though. Its what's known in tech circles as IED "iterative evil design"

Systemd now wants to do homedirs. Is that the same thing?

What do you mean “do” homedirs? Like be some kind of file system broker?

He is really really dumb person, so it is not surprising he does stupid stuff. Look at cybershit, tesla robot (driven by people remotely), anything he did last year... He is fucking dumb idiot.

I'm glad he did, now there is a clear line from when it was acceptable to when it wasn't.

The USA probably won't rebrand when its a fully fascist state.

You are really surprised by a guy who wanted to name his car series S-E-X-Y and had a temper tantrum when model E was taken and he could not "buy" it.

It just depends on which type of serifs he puts on the X.

Hopefully the next rebrand will be from X to rm -rf /.

was that the command that deleted (almost permanently) Toystory 2?

Looking it up, pretty close.

The work done on the film to date was nearly lost in 1998 when one of the animators, while routinely clearing some files, accidentally entered the deletion command code /bin/rm -r -f * on the root folder of the Toy Story 2 assets on Pixar's internal servers.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toy_Story_2#Troubled_production

Or Bobby Droptables

Yeah, I really could not understand the motivation behind that. Why throw away such a valuable brand? I mean the name was even a clever play on words that also gave them a cute bird icon/mascot.

"Twitter", with that bird logo is just a slam dunk, that's solid gold branding... It's insane to randomly "go a different direction" and then land at "X". If I was their brand coordinator or director of marketing when they made that change, I'd resign then and there.

Changing their name to "X" was essentially lighting 20% of their assets on fire on day 1.

losing just 20% is probably a best case scenario for musk IMO.

I feel like most if not pretty much all of the value of Twitter was the name itself, and the recognition it had.

Who the fuck is still on that nazi shithole

Nazis, I imagine.

Remember kids, only nazis support nazis.

I was just talking to a friend who's very anti-nazi (at least, that's what he says), told him that by staying there, he's feeding the nazis. He says that he's the resistance working from within lol. People would tell themselves all kinds of stories for convenience.

Ask him if he'd go to a nazi bar, and start a fist fight.

I mean, there's no comparison. Punching Nazis is always cool, Twitter is just talking to them, which never is. You and fifty friends go on Twitter and dunk on Nazis all day and you're still just at a table talking with the enemy. Take fifty friends to a Nazi bar and throw punches, you've just improved the neighbourhood.

And bots

Even the porn creators and erotic artists have left.

When you've lost the porn it's game over man.

The Tumblr Effect

HEY! tumblr is still fun to use.

Since you seem to know what platform have they moved to generally?

Most of them have gone to BlueSky. A few are on Mastodon but rarely as their primary (sadly). A lot of artists have gone to places like FurAffinity, Pixiv, and to a lesser extent DeviantArt.

Unfortunately a lot of them have just resorted to being on Patreon, which is unfortunate.

Asking for a friend...

bluesky. Its all on bluesky.

My government emergency alerts :(

I actually emailed my local National Weather Service station awhile back asking if they’d post on Mastodon and even offered them a BlueSky invite and they wrote back saying only Twitter and Facebook were allowed and they’d be everywhere if it was approved by higher ups.

Someone made a BlueSky bot a few months ago for NWS notices and I’m pretty sure they covered every local one. I remember the person who made it asking people to request any missing stations. Not sure if there’s a Mastodon equivalent but you could use a bridge. It won’t help with transit delays or other local government announcements but the weather service stuff is available (via an AtProto <-> ActivityPub bridge if nothing else; it’s not like you interact with the posts so it’d be ideal for a bridge).

Make a bot that listens to those and posts them here.

It’s behind a paywall and I’m not paying that Nazi.

nitter.net

Or on Blue Sky or Mastadon

Hell reach put to your reps and tell them that they should have a Blue Sky and Mastodon for if something like this happens in the future.

Ain't no better time than now due to the Twitter outage.

Try using their rss feed, with https://nitter.net/

Nazis, people who aren't bothered enough that a Nazi owns it to leave it for Bluesky, and bots, lots of bots.

Nazi's

If we’re lucky it’s forever.

Says it was only 30 minutes in the description. Kinds weird they're telling us about it and not including thst bit in the title.

They're busy, collapse the data center support columns.

In unrelated news, hate is reduced across the world.

Remember when Russia had all those cyber attacks and suddenly, a huge chunk of Reddit stopped spewing hate?

I wonder how it affected the TERFs on tumblr…

Let's gooooo. Take that garbage site out

What can I do to help the cause, even though I don't have a Twitter account and only used it for porn drawings in the past?

Was it related to graphql these clowns using?

Fascists value compliance and ideological fervor over competency, so naturally all fascist led faction experience a competency crisis sooner or later.May this happen more often.

Elon's blaming DDOS. You know I heard that the people who bulit Twitter did a great job figuring out how to handle those. Gosh, I wonder what ever happened them?

Everyone knows that the best way to address DDOS is to unplug random servers until things either stop working, or start working again.

Don't you unplug it and plug it back in again?

I unplug my router so the IP changes and hacker can no longer find me. Check & Mate.

DDOS on what exactly?

Which service? Graphql?

And nothing was lost.

Everyone strives for 5 9s, but musk aims for two 8s.

I see what you did there....

We don't have 5 9s, but we do have 9 5s.

Don't forget the 14 words! Someone screenshotted this at just the right time:

I don't get it

I don't know the 5 9s reference, but the two 8s is 88, a Nazi dog whistle for Heil Hitler, as H is the 8th letter of the alphabet.

5 9s means 99.999% uptime, which translates to a site only being down for ~0.86 seconds per day. This is the golden standard for online services

Oh okay, thank you ☺️

insert ‘oh no, anyway’ meme here

As you wish.

I came here looking for it, so I may as well follow through on the prompt.

I couldn’t figure out how to post a gif so I appreciate it!

https://lemmy.world/post/1853818

Lemmy uses pretty standard markdown, so this works in lots of forums besides lemmy.

I see. I also just discovered in Mlem that the little toolbar when composing a post can be scrolled left to right. Thanks for the info!

God I hope there's some engineer somewhere at X quietly sabotaging all of their services.

Should plant a timed zip bomb on the servers that autoruns on reboot

Plug that random USB stick you found on the sidewalk directly into the server and open up Link_ParkFullAlbum-LimeWire.exe

Oh no. So anyway, tonight we're having a stereotypical American meal that takes 25 minutes off your life; Sloppy joes, macaroni and cheese, and potato salad. It's quite good, everything made from scratch since I don't have a job anymore. How about you?

Im going to have a meal of a block of cheddar cheese with melted cheese on top, with grated permesan sprinkled on top, basted with a 5lb tub of butter.

Murica

This sounds as delicious as 64 slices of American cheese.

Pfft. Found the Canadian.

(PLEASEHELPOMGTAKEMEIN!!)

That's not really an authentic American meal unless you deep fry it in HFCS.

Is that pepper? Nope… gunpowder.

Freedom powder.

Ah yes. Americas original pop rocks.

You might consider adding a couple eggs to that. Since you can afford "permesan" and butter, I feel like it's possible you might even be able to afford the eggs without having to take out a small personal loan.

Permesan is just fancy Parmesan.

I cant afford TWO whole eggs though. Thats just silly now.

A small loan of 1 million dollars.

We had a nice homemade Thai curry here (and no, I don't live on Thailand)

I know how that goes. We sometimes have watermelon for a snack (and no I don't live on the Africa).

I'm not going to lie, that sounds really good. I'm sorry about your job, but your dinner sounds amazing.

Honestly, it's almost a relief to hear someone say "sorry about your job" without adding the caveat "but DoD/DoE/NIH/USAID is fraud/waste/bad/scam" to the statement. And yes, it was a pretty darned good dinner as long as healthy wasn't one of the criteria.

Sorry about your loss. I fear that I am not far behind you.

Chakalaka.

Dice an onion and a bell pepper, throw it into plenty of fat, sizzle until the onions are glassy, add some chilli (pickled is fine the end result can use some acid), not too little English curry powder, mix well, making sure the powder is roasted (it changes taste quite drastically), top with a grated carrot or two (veggie proportions are up to taste), put on the lid and let steam on medium heat (err towards low), once steamed (the carrot shreds basically fall apart) add a can of baked beans. Those don't need to be cooked, just let the stuff stand for a bit until everything is at equal temperature.

Eat as-is or with whatever, rice works well. Probably works with any curry mix I just happen to be out of Thai for a surprising amount of time now so I didn't try yet. Size-wise I'd say that the onion should be cut about half the size the beans are, and the bell pepper pieces to be about twice as large as the beans. If you want carrot pieces you can do that but I'd still suggest shredding some so that it can dissolve some sweetness into the saucy part.

Now this is the kind of X news I'm okay with reading.

Although I can only imagine what this means for the US since Musk is treating the government like one of his businesses.

  • This is likely the first major outage of the company since Musk took ownership in 2022.

Didn't Twitter go down multiple times for similar periods of time not long after Musk fired everybody? Or am I just hallucinating wishful thinking.

Yeah I seem to remember quite a few “oh so that’s what that wire does” situations that unfolded already.

Do we know if that was real or if the media was just exaggerating things

I remember there was a time after Musk took over that they changed the API so that only logged in users could access it. That broke all of their widgets on third-party websites, which Twitter neglected to update. The widgets phoned home every few seconds, which DDOSed themselves with their own widgets.

I dunno about going down entirely, but bits and pieces (like SMS verification) definitely broke while they were undoing work and cutting "expenses" (like office leases)

Microservices and their consequences.

Nothing of value was lost.

And nothing of value was lost.

Let it burn! It's not our problem.

DDoS attacks are illegal, but what is the legal amount of times a person can call a website? I'm sure enough people doing just a few calls per second couldn't get a person into too much trouble. Has the law even defined the difference?

The legal difference would be intent; are you trying to access the website, or are you trying to bog it down? Proving intent can of course be difficult, but OTOH I don't know how much longer American courts are going to care about silly things like proof

So, exactly what must a person avoid doing to keep from exacerbating X's DDos problem today?

No, don't ever organize like this. We are on the left. We are smart and we are righteous. We do not plan and coordinate and work together in this behavior. This would be sneaky and take social skills and foresight. No we need to gather in downtown Chicago with signs and megaphones. Protest in the streets. Only protest. We're not animals like trumpets who do this stuff and get away with it and never let up. They don't know the power of chaining themselves to a fence. They don't get the rush and mighty feeling when the crowd boos you and tells you to go home and throws things at you. No they don't understand. They don't understand we do it for them.

The most illegal part of a DDoS is usually the hacking / exploiting of thousands or millions of devices to make them all request twitter.com

I'm not entirely sure what rules it would fall under if you somehow performed a DDoS using entirely your own hardware and Internet connections. It might even be legal, just against the ToS of basically every ISP. I'm pretty sure if Google or ChatGPT take down a site by sending too many crawlers there's no legal consequences.

There is also the Hug of Death, I don't think that's illegal

I believe this is one of those things where intent matters, and may vary by location. Willing to bet hitting F5 a few times is safe, even a few hundred times as long as it’s in the realm of just checking if it’s up yet. The moment you have something scripted, you’re at least in the realm of having to explain it to a judge who probably knows fuck all about tech.

Now you will tell me that it's illegal to spam my own F5 key?

He's claimed DDoS before right after the purge. I'm pretty sure it was just the platform being crushed by normal traffic. I'm skeptical this isn't just operating as funded.

This was bound to happen, someone was going to attack the Nazi propaganda platform formerly known as Twitter at some point.

I wouldn't be too quick to rule out mismanagement from an incompetent owner.

Remember that america is now run by said incompetence with illegal firings and mass slash and burn tactics to raze the entire establishment

Of course! How could anyone forget.

The data at downforeveryoneorjustme make it appear that "only lasted for about half an hour" is BS. In fact, they appear to be having problems again this morning.

Looks like yippidy dipshit is on a great losing streak, space x, the recession, now this.

And tesla stock going into the gutter.

But wait, isn’t this some sort of official government communication channel now? Sure there must be uptime agreements and penalties for such a thing, right? Right?!?

Its been down at my house for a while now.

It was never up in this house.

I don't have an account. Never did. But I have a custom blocklist running on my router and elons crap is there. Along with a lot of trash sites like facebook.

Half an hour is still pretty huge for a site like Xitter.

Half an hour is “we just broke our SLA” level bad. I guess if your org has been stripped of all its talent that’s the new standard.

I'm quite surprised it took this long for the outage to appear after all those cuts by the fucker.

Weird that they said "only" half an hour. Thats a really long time

Oh no!

Anyway...

Do it again!

And the owner wants to "automate" the US government with AI.

The idiots are in charge.

The US are truly turning into a real-life version of "Idiocracy". I'm just waiting for Trump's orders to start watering crops with Gatorade

I wouldn't notice

Good. Sadly it was fixed.

Couldn't happen to Mastodon.

Looks like Elon was chewing on the wires again

"Something went wrong. Try Mastodon."

Oh, that's why xcancel was returning 502

nitter.net is back, by the way.

Yaaay!

Disappointing cheeseburgers are the worst

I think it comes down to the patty at the end. If it’s a frozen patty, like a bubba burger, it can be cooked to perfection, but it requires constant attention to detail otherwise it’s either undercooked mush, or an overcooked grey thing. Generally patties that are hand made are more forgiving. But even then, I guess the cheese and bread involved are possible phases to one up or really detract from a burger. I think I’m just really hungry for a good burger and it’s late

I totally agree with you. Frozen isn't worth it IMO having less higher quality is the way. Excellent cheese and bread can improve things, however the burger should be the main event and other things a mere accessory

Just imagine what this saves in hosting bills

Or saving on hosting is what caused the outage.

“Save 100% with this simple trick!”

Wonderful! May it stay that way forever.

Good riddance

What can we do to keep it like this forever?

I hadn't noticed.

Can we get a permanent outage of that goddamned website, pretty please? For the sake of humanity?

There have been so many instances where i wanna see replies of a post or more stuff about a person, but then that mandatory account log in wall kicks in.

Add “cancel” after the X in the url for workaround access. Like any other workaround, this will only work until it doesn’t anymore

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=41546640

It would be poetic if the cyber attacks would be coming from Ukrainian hackers.

Looks like annonomus is saying they took it down.

Elon fired the maintenance guys yet again?

Them people are just paid to sit around. Why would you bother?

Source; work in maintenance.

Funny enough, Anonymous is claiming it was them.

I love that for them

Make it permanent next time.

Wooooooo!!

Oh no.

Anyway…

Feature, not a bug

Elon must be experiencing withdrawal symptoms right about now.

oh no, anyways . . .

I though nitter finally broke.

Interesting. Looking into this.

Oh, so that was it?

I just thought my Twitter Piko app was outdated 😅

Is tempting to check if it's still down. But wom't touch this ugly domain.

Someone should do a massive DDOS.

Don't give Musk a reason to tell his orange bitch to sign an order making lobby for the government to regulate and control internet traffic.

Using devices inside the country to DoS Twitter will give them an excuse to cry domestic cyber terrorism, and using devices from outside the country will give them an opportunity to justify creating an American equivalent of China's Great Firewall. The time it would keep Twitter down for is comparatively insignificant to the potential consequences of losing online freedom and anonymity.
