Steam Deck hits 18,000 games playable and verified

1y 3mon ago by lemmy.world/u/cm0002 in linux_gaming from www.gamingonlinux.com

as time goes on, the steam deck keeps getting increasingly tempting to me.

I got one recently. Works way better than I expected, and one got years of Linux gaming under my belt already.

I’ll get a used LCD one in a few months. Looking foward to it.

Good call. I still have mine from 2022. I payed the 5 bucks to pre-order on the first day. I really just thought I was at least putting money into Linux and showing interest. I wasn't expecting much but, shocked at how good the Steam Deck actually was. Valve really stepped up and turned a decent handheld (that I would still be using today in the state it was released in), into really well done polished device. The LCD is even getting Wake-on-BT in the next Steam OS 3.7 release. I tried the preview, it works great. In a couple years when the Steam Deck 2 releases, if I'm still playing older titles, I'll probably just wait for the first sale to buy. You can't go wrong with a Steam Deck. It'll change the way you play games.

You have any wifi issues? Got mine super early too and the wifi is terrible in a lot of places. I have a wired dock though, so it's not a huge deal for me. Should probably look for a fix... Haha

I've not had any issues with the WIFI. At least nothing that would have bothered me. I've taken the deck with me riding around the U.S. and Mexico for a couple years on my motorcycle. I've definitely connected to a lot of different WIFI's. Everything seems normal.

Sounds like I better get to troubleshooting! Appreciate the reply :)

I kinda wish they would not release a Deck 2 for a while and focus on just small iterations (new screen, new motherboard etc).

I think that's what Valve is doing. Valve said the OLED was the actual device they wanted to build in the first place. They could further iterate on the OLED but, as far as I have heard, everybody is really happy with that device. Valve also said there wouldn't be a Steam Deck 2 until there is a significant leap in performance that matches the same power profile. I'm guessing that means 2027 but really that could be 2028 or 2029 with the way things are going. If things get pushed out to 2028 or 2029, I definitely think an OLED refresh could be on order. I still have the LCD and I'm not really in a rush to replace it. Really, for me a Steam Deck 2 would be a nice to have right now.

What I think Valve is actually working on right now is a Steam console. I wouldn't hesitate to buy one of those. I use my Steam Deck as console all the time. It's great, but it would be great to have a console that's unconstrained by the power profile required for the hand held. I'll probably just build my own console and throw Bazzite on there, but still I'd rather just buy the Steam Console.

I really hope so because that means less wasting on R&D on a device that already works fine and will continue to work fine for years. Not everything needs a new masive upgrade and living on the bleeding edge.

Yeah I can’t wait.

I think it’ll be a perfect combo. Playstation 5 for demanding games, Steam Deck for less demanding games and a Surface Go linked to a big screen for administration.

I'm confused, when did the PS5 get games?/s

You can set your Steam Deck up to stream the PS5 with Chiaki (https://git.sr.ht/~thestr4ng3r/chiaki). Pretty cool feature for when the TV is in use.

Yeah I know about it.

It’s great to have this option 👍

I got mine at launch an absolutely love it.

Totally worth it. You will not regret it.

I've been a Linux fan for a long time but never really looked at the steam deck. I fgured a linux-based handheld would need quite a bit of tinkering and I didn't really have the ability to do that in my living situation. My brother has one and he loves it but it never really picqued my interest until last year. I got the OLED version and it has been so great. I play way too much now lol

The other thing that blew me away is that games marked "playable" are generally perfectly fine to play. Valve's high standards for their ratings is really important but I haven't had any problems with the "playable" categories. It has redefined how I play video games. Plus, the idea that my untech-savvy fiancee would be playing on a linux machine is insane.

As someone who loves the steam deck, the verification system is a total joke and should be totally ignored. There's plenty of "verified" games that run terribly, or don't work. ProtonDB is what you should use instead.

Eh, I've had pretty good luck with Verified titles. It's not perfect, but generally speaking:

  • verified - no concerns about compat
  • playable - check reasons, and maybe protondb if there's anything concerning
  • unsupported/unknown - check protondb

ProtonDB also isn't perfect, and there are plenty of "gold" and "platinum" titles that I've had (small) issues with.

Reading ProtonDB comments sure. Going off of just the ratings no.

And still no SW kotor support, a 20+ year old game ported to a dozen platforms, and game controller ready.
