Patching Hole in Door Advice

1y 2mon ago by lemmy.world/u/dohpaz42 in diy@beehaw.org

This is an interior door in my kitchen for the pantry. Banana for scale (and pre-did nene snack). I do not know what happened, other than it was patched before. I cut out all pieces, and I was thinking I could use some Great Stuff Big Gap Filler that I have for another project, then cover it with wood filler, sand, and paint.

My question to you all is if my idea would work (as in I wouldn’t have to do it again in a few years), or if there is a better/magical Liopleurodon way? I’m open to being creative with it too.

I like your idea. The expanding foam will add some structural support for the patch, which is important.

Yeah, low-expansion foam sounds nice.

I might cut out a rectangle of 1/8" plywood, trace it into the door around the hole, and cut a matching hole (enlarging the accidental hole slightly). Then fit that in and tape a couple slats over it to keep it flush while the foam cures.

Or make a tiny door in the door, to hide valuables / amuse kids.

Are these cabinet doors by any chance still for sale? Much easier to swap it out. Pull each drawer open and check the underside for possible identification info (sticker or brand) if you don’t have the info already.

This is a full size kitchen pantry door. Not cabinet.

Edit:

Edit edit: ok, it’s 24” wide versus 32”.
