If you know how to selfhost there is also Immich. FOSS and beautiful apps
Immich is pretty impressive, but I have dozens of relatives who take photos and have ran out of storage on their phones. Signing them up to google photos / iCloud Photos is the only automatic way to save their photos and free up space.
You bet your ass I’m not taking responsibility for other peoples backups
Hopefully EU can turn the screws like they do in other areas and force better integration with third party backup solutions

It will be hard to get the average person to switch when it's at least twice as expensive as iCloud.
