White House calls Amazon ‘hostile’ for reportedly planning to list tariff costs

1y 1mon ago by lemmy.world/u/return2ozma in news from www.theguardian.com

Yes, keep making enemies of the billionaires that got this administration into office and spent millions of dollars to do so. I'd very much love that for you.

Good thing this isn't a country that came about because a bunch of rich white dudes got tired of being taxed and started a revolution.

That's possibly reframing "no taxation without representation" a bit but I don't entirely disagree with the sentiment.

didn't washington own like the western 2/3 of Pennsylvania?

And Ohio. He was by far the wealthiest man in the Colonies during his lifetime.

So, he could have paid other guys to fight the war and stayed home? Instead of being in the middle of the battles, and going cold and hungry in Valley Forge?

There's a lot of bad things you can say about Washington but enough good to at least make him complicated. He chose to limit his own Presidency, the opposite of our wannabe Führer. for one.

Well, his wealth wasn't exactly liquid, it was mostly tied up in wilderness land.

Fortunes in those days weren't in bank accounts, or stocks, or index funds, etc. They tended to be tied up in assets like land, slaves, crops, etc., and cold hard cash/gold, stored in a box somewhere, like under the floor.

The modern technology of satelites, phones and such werent around back then, so any general wouldn't be an effective one if they werent on the front lines with their soldiers.

Yes, he chose to join the battle and become a General rather than sit out the war at Monticello. It's not like he was ambitious to become the leader of the new country. He felt a sense of responsibility.

They thought funding Trump would get them representation. They were wrong. Trump cares about no one but himself.

he was only ever representing putin, and MSB never the billionaires in the us.

In the most literal sense we have representation, but it sure as hell doesn't seem like it in practice... :(

Literal only in the terminological sense. We elect “representatives” but they don’t actually represent us in any meaningful way.

Don't they? Look around you.

When elections are fraudulent, its the same as no representation. Besides, pretty soon they'll be suspending elections altogether. It doesn't get more "no representation" than that.

I don't know, I don't see anyone saying that here.

I really don't understand the aggression, I was talking about the old rich dead people propaganda concerning no taxation without representation 200 years ago, I never said anything about the fuckwads we have today.

If you think I'm saying something different, explain what you read and allow me the opportunity to clarify my intent.

Saying I'm full of shit at this point is just asinine.

The billionaires have thus far been too cheap to amass private armies to directly enforce their own will. Why, when you can lobby Congress for the price of a used Hyundai Sonata to get the Army to do what you want?

The government holds the power of violence and Trump holds the power of the government. The billionaires will be reminded of that if they get out of line. Coincidentally, this is the arrangement of modern Russia.

they have been too cheap thus far.

I'm pretty sure that Bezos had enough money to bribe moderate chunks of the army.

Personnel is one thing.

Modern warfighting is outrageously expensive. Guided munitions can cost hundreds of thousands each. Armored vehicles cost millions. Combat aircraft, tens of millions. And it continues to cost tons of money just to keep them in a bunker ready to go.

They will balk at the cost of owning/operating even a single Arleigh-Burke destroyer.

There is a reason they're all too happy to keep letting you and me indirectly fund their military aspirations through taxes.

this is part of why it's important for everyone to pay attention to the asymmetric warfare being conducted in Ukraine. for one, it's a genocide, don't look away and speak for their liberation just like i hope everyone is speaking up for all colonized peoples, like Mayans, Darfurians, Congolese, Palestinians, and Uyghers. for another the skills demostrated may become necessary in the near future

You can have all the expensive equipment you want. They don't have the numbers. When your enemies are all around you and this military historically fucking sucks at combating insurgency, you're going to lose.

The military would be smart to tell this dude to pound sand before they, and a bunch of people die in a new civil war that they can't win against the most armed civilian population on the planet.

You are in agreement with the person you responded to.

They will balk at the cost of owning/operating even a single Arleigh-Burke destroyer.

They don't need one. They need a sniper.

its mostly asymmetrical/cyberwarefare now anyways. russia and china are both are good at this, but not militarily.

That's the crazy part, unless they're "outlawed" billionaires should try and improve people's lives since it means they would have more money to spend on the crap those billionaires are selling! It's hard to sell stuff on Amazon if everyone is struggling to afford housing and food.

UPS just laid off 20K workers on the expectation that Amazon deliveries will be way down.

Container ships are down 60%. More than any month during the pandemic.

Trump is imploding the entire economy.

Better to rule in Hell than serve in Heaven.

They could work to remove the destitution and desperation of working people. But if their workers weren't in such dire straits, then they wouldn't have so much power over them. Workers with good pay and a healthy work-life balance also have more time to pursue unionization and other political activities. Even if improving the lives of the people would objectively increase the wealth of the ultra-rich, it would still decrease their power. And ultimately, the only reason people ever obtain that level of wealth is because they desire power more than anything else. People who aren't power-hungry monsters cash out and retire early long before they reach billionaire status.

Workers with good pay and a healthy work-life balance are unlikely to pursue unions. That's the stuff unions are trying to achieve.

In the article, Amazon already back peddled and said it was just in the idea phase and they never really planned on implementing it.

He's brought down Tesla (bankrupt in 2 years, MMW), and now Amazon. We shpuld start a betting pool for who-s next. META? Google? Microsoft?

He’s trying to kill all those US companies.

Wouldn't that be wonderful? Those corporations are what helped this "voting" travesty into power.

Corporations don't have peoples' well being in their sights except as target practice.

Power to the people, not corporations.

That's the thing that was always gonna happen. They were always gonna bring themselves and subsequently society down. It's just the crit multi of Donald Trump a lot of people seemed not prepared for.

That’ll get the people grumbling.

Walmart should also do this.

Grocery stores too.

Thoughts on how to make this happen:

  • Whenever a shopowner is already critical of Trump, call them and suggest it directly.

  • Ask your local cashiers and other store clerks how come the prices rose, and whether that really is all tariffs. Again and again. And ideally so that other shoppers overhear it.

  • Make angry social media posts explicitly asking the same, explicitly tagging your local store and/or the chain to which they belong, and muse about looking into their competitors.

I get that you want to aggrieve the owners but that last • tactic feeds into Reichwingers absolving Trump. Asking in person, where they have a chance to say, "yes, see this here is the tariffs amount" puts the blame where it belongs (and can also bring price-gouging into the light, because for sure some will happen).

Gouging will happen in every industry, by every corporation. The only ones that might not are locally owned, which has been dwindling since at least the 90s.

It happened with covid, it happened with bird flu, and it's about to happen the biggest ever with tariffs as the excuse.

Well, it’s never going to happen in the first place

«Amazon moved to distance itself from the report, saying the idea had been considered by Amazon Haul, the company’s recently launched low-cost shopping hub, but had been rejected.

“The team that runs our ultra-low-cost Amazon Haul store considered the idea of listing import charges on certain products. This was never approved and is not going to happen,” said Tim Doyle, Amazon spokesperson."

Trump: “We’re increasing foreign prices because we want consumers to prefer buying American.”

Retailers: “These foreign goods are more expensive than American-made ones.”

Trump: “How dare you tell them that!”

Cause we're too stupid to already know...

Telling people how much the Trump Tax costs them is now considered “hostility”. Got it.

You aren't supposed to make the President look bad. That is illegal.

will be illegal.

Retroactively

As is tradition

Breaking the Law by Judas Priest intensifies

You are not supposed to wake up the zombie voters. That is illegal.

would be a great add-on for firefox, though

Incredibly hard to source that data from the outside. Even if you can identify the suppliers, different parts of an assembly may be classified differently, even between different importers who may have partial exemptions.

Not that they’ll do this, but Amazon should maliciously comply and hide the tariff metadata in the HTML for the browser extensions.

either way it would be free speech if an add-on or a website did it.

but those days are over.

I bet, yes, good point

“Tariff GUESStimator for Amazon | Firefox”

1000%

Same immediate reaction

Annnnnd he did. You called it.

Pathetic boot licker bezos

What a little fucking bitch baby.

At least Jeff Bezos is very philanthropic - shows his emotional intelligence

Oops sorry he’s not at all, meaning this was an incredibly hostile comment. Sorry for exposing low EQ, pls call me after Fox Morning Show mister pres & I’ll retract like a very strong smart man

lol so many dollars and so little anything else, how can someone show their face in public being so small

Bingo!

According to the article they already did

He backed down before Trump even yelled at him, this was never going to actually happen.

I learned from this very thread that the administration has already bribed Amazon with $40 million for a documentary on Melania. Planet Earth cost around half that.

“Why didn’t Amazon do this when the Biden administration hiked inflation to the highest level in 40 years?” Leavitt asked during a press briefing.

Because Biden didn't start a trade war?

Because “inflation” isn’t a percentage number a president can just impose at will lol.

When confronted with this nonsense, I had started telling people that Biden had levers on his desk labeled inflation and gas prices. And nobody could get him to stop pulling them. Taking it to the absurd was surprisingly effective.

Spoken like a Republican that doesn't understand inflation and price gouging vs tariffs.

Maybe a few of them are too stupid to understand, maybe a couple

How dangerous to believe deeply resourced and corrupt individuals are entirely unaware

All these Republican banshees understand is bleach their hair, botox their faces, bleat buzzwords and not so slowly turn the US into a turbo capitalistic hellscape

Amazon .com denied a report on Tuesday that it planned to disclose the cost that U.S. tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump were adding to its products, after the White House blasted the initial story.

https://www.reuters.com/business/retail-consumer/white-house-amazon-tariff-price-announcement-is-hostile-2025-04-29/

Bezos is a sniveling coward.

The dude looks like he keeps a half billion in cash on him at all times to try and buy his way out of the angry mob(s) that will eventually come for him... Because he's that much of a doucher.

What's really insane is that even with all his money, the best he can do for a wife is some kind of plastic surgery experiment that looks like it came out of the Tool Prison Sex music video.

Just so afraid of losing a small amount of the fortune he can't spend in his lifetime, that he's given up the true power that comes with that type of wealth. The power to help

Hey, talk for yourself, there are a lot of us who would love to be married to anything from a Tool video, and we don't like being insulted

Mostly MJK, thank you very much

Maybe this will show him that you can't buy Trumps loyalty because he has no loyalty. However, I have my doubts that even Trump going from going from "My good buddy Bezos" to "Amazon is the enemy" in the course of a day will be enough of a object lesson for Bozos.

He's already backtracking.

I know, but but even so the whiplash move from "best buddy" to "enemies list" (and probably back again after this capitulation) should tell anyone who wants to ally with Trump what a futile of a move that is. It doesn't matter how much you schmooze him, how give him, or how much he owes you; the moment you're not useful to him Trump will throw you under the bus.

You see Jeff, once you start groveling to the autocrat you are not allowed to stop.

"but all I wanted was an even more negative tax rate and to be able to fire workers for getting hurt on the job! I didn't want the dictator to threaten me with the window treatment"

It is always a temptation to an armed and agile nation
To call upon a neighbour and to say:–
"We invaded you last night–we are quite prepared to fight,
Unless you pay us cash to go away."

And that is called asking for Dane-geld,
And the people who ask it explain
That you've only to pay 'em the Dane-geld
And then you'll get rid of the Dane!

It is always a temptation for a rich and lazy nation,
To puff and look important and to say:–
"Though we know we should defeat you,
we have not the time to meet you.
We will therefore pay you cash to go away."

And that is called paying the Dane-geld;
But we've proved it again and again,
That if once you have paid him the Dane-geld
You never get rid of the Dane.

It is wrong to put temptation in the path of any nation,
For fear they should succumb and go astray;
So when you are requested to pay up or be molested,
You will find it better policy to say:–

"We never pay any-one Dane-geld,
No matter how trifling the cost;
For the end of that game is oppression and shame,
And the nation that plays it is lost!"

- Rudyard Kipling

Seemingly because their stock price started to fall due to the Trump admin's reaction. Which, what? Why would that negatively impact their stock?

Fucking pussy.

“The team that runs our ultra-low-cost Amazon Haul store considered the idea of listing import charges on certain products. This was never approved and is not going to happen,” said Tim Doyle, Amazon spokesperson.

Lmao some poor team gets thrown under the bus

exists in reality, logically examines reality, does rational thing

HOW DARE YOU

It's just another example of their incompetence.

They ought to be proud of labeling the tariffed products, so that customers could easier choose the domestic brands, which supposedly is the point of having the tariffs in the first place.

Attempting to hide it only shows that they realize how bad the tariffs really are.

Had they labelled them "Trump's beautiful tariffs" it would have gone smoothly

Tariffs are advertised as helping domestic companies.

In actuality, they directly hurt foreign companies and the hope is that the unhurt domestics will then flourish.

If the tariffs collected were used to simulate domestic companies, this would actually be possibly beneficial to the economy.

However those tariffs are being pocketed by the rich (through tax cuts and money laundering through contracts and crypto).

These should not be listed as tariffs costs, they should be listed for what it is: "amount Trump's administration decided to steal from you based on your spending habits"

Amazon never did it.

Chickened out I see

Nah, not chickened out, they're in cahoots. Example .. 40 mil for a shitty Melania documentary is outrageous. For reference, BBC's planet earth cost 25 million. So.. yeah..

Who the actual fuck cares about Melania? I get watching a documentary on Chris Chan cause at least that's largely a self contained train wreck, but the fuck has Melania ever done that's even passingly notable?

By the Allfather I can't even fathom the fucking vanity of these pissants.

Eh, it's mostly about the bribe, I'm sure. Having people pretend to be interested in her is just a bonus.

Probably mostly the bribe, but for them to settle on a fucking documentary is just alien to me. Like it's just asking for folks to take a find toothed comb through her shit, the concept alone makes me want to climb into a hole and further blend into the paint. But I am admittedly coming from a background that utterly encourages being unnoticed except to those you like, good way to not be shot.

Easy to produce, spend the bare minimum, "spend" the rest on "marketing" and voilà, ez 38 mil in Melania's pockets. Nobody said anything about the documentary being thorough or factual or anything of the sort, you're thinking of the alternate reality where truth is a thing and Gwyneth Paltrow and other cunts aren't allowed to peddle their bullshit

I'm pretty sure that's just an episode of How Its Made on history channel circa 2010.

CamelCamelCamel should add it anyway

Cool! Send Bezos to El Salvador.

"How dare you offer clarity about what we've done!"

Yeah, no shit it's hostile. This Administration is being hostile to their business! What in the fuck did they expect to happen?

So the truth is hostile.

Meanwhile there's a deportation bill to the tune of 80,000,000,000. These are for concentration camps and 10,000 more ICE Nazis to run them.

They are coming for you.

"When they kick down your front door, how you gonna come , with your hands on your head, or the trigger of a gun?" - Joe Strummer The Clash

I do so wish they would. Certain they won't.

Bezos bent knee & kissed the ring. Chances he'll grow a spine? 1 in a few million.

They've already had a phone call about it and Trump is back to calling him the most amazing leader of a beautiful American company or whatever. He stepped down in 2021.

He's still on the board, but yeah he hasn't been at the helm for a while now.

Wonder if Bezos will ask for his money back

I’m sure there is a newer version available; probably an Amazon off-brand even.

AmazonBezics

He gets credits on Prime streaming.

It seems he's amping up his language. I think he recently said a former associate was guilty of treason.

Scary how that’s plausible, drowned out in the noise, and totally accepted as normal (or even cheered) by the public.

How dare you try to hide that shit, drumpf you cancerous toad! If Amazon has any balls, which it doesn't and has proved so, it would not back down. I wanna know why my shit is more expensive and I wanna be able to point my fucking finger.

I want to punch that bitch in the face every time I see a pic of her.

Gold-digging whore.

Even if she has onlyfans?

🤣😂😂😂 frrr

Super punchable face

Try realistic

Tronald Dump only wants one thing, unquestioning loyalty. Thinking for yourself is treason

The truth is usually hostile to this administration.

I mean, I thought Jeff was being charitable during the inauguration.

Bezos backing down while at the same time owning a newspaper is pretty pretty pretty shite.

As a European, I must thank the US for making my pet products cheaper. Way cheaper. Way cheaper than I could ever expect.

I just wish I could buy these products, these same products, without ruining the world and my morality as well.

But what am I talking about… my cats deserve litter robots at 90 % discount. (Edit: obviously sarcasm)

I know it's not the takeaway from your post, but if you're actually getting one please test the litter robot throughly before allowing your cat to use it unsupervised. I've seen videos of horrible designs that have killed pets before and when word gets out, they just re-brand them.

I forgot to add an /s for the litter robot, but you are absolutely right. These devices can be dangerous for cats, and Amazon does absolutely nothing about them.

I have watched a lot of videos on litter robots from “One man, five cats” on YouTube. I highly recommend them, especially the video where he tests the litter robots with cat plushies that almost get decapitated.

Be wary of giving the robot your WiFi password though

I set up a guest network called "Chinese Spy Devices" that is behind a VPN and all my electronics that need an internet connection go there. Have fun talking to each other guys!

I forgot to add an /s for the litter robot, but irregardless I agree with you about a separate network for “smart” home devices (IoT). I have three networks that are firewalled from one another. One is specifically for these kinds of devices.

The mean girls oligarch shunning is actually kind of hilarious

Keep pissing off the elite, trump,.please keep pissing them off.

I love how they get poorer and want to get rid of you some way

what the xD Trump is not pissing the elite off, he is hired for the elite and for project 2025, who want an extreme conservative america with only republicans at power 💩

Sooooo, the fucking "billionaire" POTUS is somehow NOT "the elite"?? What the actual fuck do you people smoke, and do you know where I can score some? I wish I could be this delusional sometimes.

He's costing billionaires loads of money, usually that doesn't end well... Obe can hope, anyways

ah, got it, sorry, misunderstood what you were getting at, thought you were one of the poors thinking Fatputin was on their side against the "elites".

Gotta love the parasite class turning on eachother

I was wondering when retailers would do this. American retailers do this with all other large taxes and fees. Why would this be any different?

American retailers don't tell you anything. They just randomly charge you more at the till.

What are you talking about? American businesses are famous for breaking out sales tax, regulatory fees, tips, and bullshit “service” fees to make their product appear cheaper than it is.

Example: DoorDash

Temu, taobao, alibaba all openly show 150% tariffs in their ui.
Go try checking out.

Amazon might hide it but it sells all the same products so not gonna deceive many

I don't think you understand how stupid the average person is. There is a decent chance this will all be biden inflation in their minds and not tariffs if there isn't literally a thing that says "tariff charge" on it. Even then they will probably see that and think it's just there to lie and hurt Trump

They think this will somehow be a quick trade war that ends in everything being the same price, but suddenly produced domestically. They are still delusional. They are still riding the 2020 inflation wave they call bidenomics.

What's hilarious is the tariffs appear in their "Haul" storefront, which is just their version of Temu. It's pretty new like a few months old and an attempt at stealing business from those other apps.

So you're telling me that a online shopper would stumble on Amazon Haul, never ever knowing about the many other discount e-commerce stores, and won't quickly piece together WHY things are priced that way?

I would call this move by Amazon honest.

I thought the same but apparently Amazon back-tracked like the wimps they are. It would have been the right thing to do but the fact they gave up on it makes a lot more sense.

Nah, it's pragmatic. This way Amazon can go, 'see we didn't raise OUR prices, the extra cost is from the tarrifs'.

If they wanted to be honest they would also mention that Bezos and Amazon donated millions (that we know of) to Trump's campaign AND inauguration fund, and Trump is why we have the tariffs in the first place.

If you literally GIVE someone a gun, and bullets, knowing full well that they aren't mentally stable, and they kill someone, you ARE responsible. At the very least, an accessory. In this case, co-conspirator is the more appropriate term.

MAGAts are the ones that are hostile to our pocketbooks.

I would be pissed if they didn't. Getting surprised AFTER the purchase with an extra... whatever percentage Trump has settled on this week, would be absolutely infuriating.

I think the idea was "here's the portion of the price that is affected by import tariffs." The price doesn't change. But it's just the WH freaking out over something that one small division of Amazon was considering and hadn't even made a decision about.

Haha keep dancing for your new master, Bezos. Fuckhead.

You know, I never knew who any of Biden's press secretaries were. They were never spouting insane bullshit, I guess.

We could help with those “I did this” stickers - do a little homework ahead of time and calculate certain items X% lower. At this point it just needs to be reasonable; that side has no quarter to call US out for bending the truth.

Some great timing happened, my Prime membership auto renewal coincided with the inauguration and public display of facism - so I ceased all purchases and didn’t re-up for prime.

I’m doing my part!

Isn't customary in the US to publish the prices before taxes and then ar last moment add all the local and state taxes?

Yea

Why anounce this? Just do it.

But these tariff costs are going to be paid by China just like you promised, right Don ? RIGHT ????

Just like how Mexico paid for that wall the first time. Zzzzzz

"free speech"

Never ever take fascists at their word, they're all bullshitting you always.

Amazon had already listed import and duty fee way before this. These fees are just now a lot larger and more "visible".

Tarrifs = Tax

The tax is paid by local business and then passed onto consumers in higher cost of goods.

FYI, generally when you buy items on Amazon and the goods are not locally stocked in Amazon's warehouse for same day delivery, Amazon acts like a broker for you helping facilitate the import of goods. The import fee is then passed onto you as the "importer" directly. Things that Amazon stocks locally but imported themselves will just increase in price and a label may not show the import fee paid for by amazon at the time they imported the product or item.

The import fee is then passed onto you as the “importer” directly.

Amazon has basically been a massive drop shipping scheme for the past five years or so. Basically everything is stuff that’s on AliExpress, just doubled in price and relisted on Amazon.

It’s not even a good place for books anymore.

While it sounds like Amazon already capitulated, I'm guessing they'll switch gears when their customers start complaining about the rise in prices.

how dare you make people realize that tariffs hurt them and not companies!!!???111

Yeah more people need to be hostile to this jackoff

Ahahahahahahahahahah

Bezos is to Trump as Trump is to Putin. IOW they each grovel and obey in the hopes their master will give even a slight positive acknowledgement, but it never happens.

its the greatest witch hunt, its election interferance, its terrorism, its weaponizing yada yada yada...........
