Students banned from using nicknames under new anti-trans Florida schools guidance

2y 10mon ago by kbin.social/u/stopthatgirl7 in news from www.thepinknews.com

The Orange County Public Schools system in Florida has announced guidance banning trans students from bathrooms and the use of nicknames.

I suspect the changes to race theory pushed through recently in Florida will have this taught as a acid bath was beneficial and great for your complexion...

We call my son and daughter by shortened versions of their first names. Both are in High School in OCPS. Today they brought home the forms for us to sign to allow them to go by those shortened names in school. I was shocked.

Perhaps Ronald DeSantis should be forced to get permission from his family inorder to continue to be called Ron.

The sad thing is, my brother has a name like "Benjamin". My mother is a very mentally ill individual and is extremely militant about her children's names "I chose your names and you will go by exactly what I named you!" and refused to let him go by "Ben" or let us call him "Ben". Except, outside of the house he always went by Ben, she just didn't know it. I always called him Ben when we weren't home, because it's what he wanted to be called. So kids like this would have to bring a form home and get their ass kicked by mom for going by a name they aren't supposed to? Fuck that.

My mom was the exact same way. "If I wanted you to be called that I would have named you that".

The delicious irony is that she is no contact with some of her children because they ended up legally changing their names (I don't even know my one sibling's legal name because they just bailed) and the rest of her kids go by nicknames away from her.

Let's also not forget Rafael "Ted" Cruz, Leslie "Gerald Ford" King and Donald "Don Jr." Trump, Jr.

I hope all media refer to him as Ronald until this goes away.

The amount of abject cruelty that is being leveled at trans children in Florida is fucking horrifying. This is legally enforced humiliation and bullying. This alone would have been more than enough to drive me to suicide when I was a child myself. And they are absolutely aware that this will cause that. Ron plans to orchestrate a genocide in Florida. He's essentially forced every single person, company, doctor, politician, educator, teacher, any professional human being or group of human beings who values human life out of the state. When he's done all that will remain are the most openly violent fascists and all the people who are too impoverished to leave the state. Of which many such impoverished disenfranchised people are trans children. How such open fascist power has not been internationally condemned and how he himself has not faced expulsion from any political office and faced serious legal actions from the government of the United States is beyond me. I thought world War 2 and the rise of fascism in Europe was supposed to have taught us something. Evidently not.

Fascism should've ended with WW2. The most violent ruthless war in human history. The death count alone is mind-blowing.

Yeah but "COMMUNISM killed more people" so fascism is cool I guess.

You could just not like dictatorships no matter what their official doctrine might be. It is allowed.

Fascism exists outside dictatorships. Like in Florida, for example.

I know I did the numbers once and if you just lined up the dead combatants from the USSR side head to toe it would cover a distance from NYC to LA multiple times.

Most depressing road trip ever.

What's going on is the ramp up to genocide

I thought world War 2 and the rise of fascism in Europe was supposed to have taught us something.

They don't gotta burn the books, they just remove 'em.

WWII might have been the end, but they've slowly been worsening education especially in places like Florida. I think at this point, capitalist social media is also a significant cause of the rise in fascism. When Zuck decides to platform holocaust deniers or twitter decides "free speech [for nazis]" it legitimizes it. It doesn't take much before this translates into real life. You surround yourself online in your little bubble with all of the other crazies (yay Facebook is bringing people together) long enough and it's nearly impossible not to translate that into the real world.

History is pretty fuckin' easy to repeat if you don't know the history.

Did you know that in the worst case sea level scenario due to climate change, all of Florida will be completely underwater? That means that while the world IS headed toward an inhospitable hellscape, at least we have the silver lining of seeing Florida completely eradicated.

You're not thinking this through. Every Florida man alive will flee to dry land. Florida is a people, not a place.

Idk, wouldn't they spread to other states or maybe most move to the same location and then turn that place into new Florida

Wait where have I seen this before

That would entail admitting that climate change is real and that GQP mythos was wrong about something. Based on the way we handled covid, I wouldn't worry about most floridians migrating due to climate change

So basically deny it's happening until the water is up to their necks, then start talking about the importance of boats while they drown?

New Florida already exists. It's called Ohio.

Considering the victory Ohioans just had, I don't know about that.

listen, Florida is more than a set of policy decisions by pudding fingers, Florida is a state of mind.

I assure you, Ohio residents are equally batshit. I live in Erie, PA and deal with them regularly.

They'll just leave and ruin everywhere else. At least they're contained in their shit hole

“Those shithole states.”

-Donald Trump probably

Ahh, the Florida Containment Theory.

Did you know that most voters in Florida don't agree with this shit and that taking glee in the potential eradication of an entire people and their home is exactly the same kind of shit that racists do when they blame all Muslims for terrorism or Hitler and the Nazis did when they targeted a population for their religion (or for simply being related to someone who was a Jew)?

The examples of this "they're the bad guys" generalism is part of the problem. If you're really so enlightened, don't be part of the problem, too, it only alienates more who might be part of solving the problem if they weren't ostracized over something as stupid as their birthplace or where they choose to live.

I mean they voted for the people that do this stuff. Just by nature of how voting works, a majority of them likely agree.

DeSantis won his last election by the largest margin in a Florida election in over 40 years

If this isn't what people there want, they've got a very strange way of showing it.

All this to bully the 10 whole trans kids. What goes through these fascist fucks heads

Hate gets votes

Fear maintains power.

Aha i remember when conservatives claimed to be the party of small government.

That was when they were just psychopathically neoliberal and "small government" was code for "we want gut regulations so corporations can put formaldehyde in milk again".

Which they'll still do of course, it just won't win them elections these days. So they pander to bigots to make up the numbers.

They still claim it, been claiming it my entire life and it has never been true

This is insane. Fascist.

Only if your legal name is Fascist, otherwise I’m gonna need to see that permission slip…

It's extra ironic because conservatives want you to believe that people are somehow forcing them to use certain pronouns, but they're the only ones passing fascist laws that dictate what pronouns you're required to use.

How's that freedom working out for you guys?

Land of the free and home of the brave...

I guess you have to be brave to live there.

So is DeSantis going to start going by Ronald now?

He IS a clown. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Clowns at least make an effort at being entertaining.

Ronald Dion DeSantis, you MUST use his full legal name now.

You'd think that half the population of Florida is trans with the disproportional amount of effort the gremlins in charge undetake to inflict cruelty on them.

When are the people of Florida going to put their precious second amendment rights to good use?

The enemy has to be all powerful and easy to defeat.

Grrr. "Call people what they ask you to call them." is not supposed to a difficult aspect of the Golden Rule to understand.

Call me Dark Lord Snugglypoo... ...and I will question your life choices.

Anything you say, Dark Lord Snugglypoo.

No! FuglyDuck I assume is your given name and I will only call you FuglyDuck!

Well I will assume that Snuglypoo is your family name and FuglyDuck is your given name so I shall call you Dark Lord FuglyDuck Snugglpoo.

My liege…

It’s more honest anyhow.

Under the guidance, published Monday (7 August), teachers at schools in Orange County must use pronouns and titles that correspond to their “biological sex” at birth, and parents must fill out a form to let teachers know of any deviation from their child’s legal name, even if this is a simple nickname.

So if the governor of Florida was subjected to this “guidance”, he would need permission to go by Ron.

This is the same guy going to war with Disney World who also held his wedding there.

This is so ridiculously out of touch. You think they're gonna stop kids from using nicknames?

That's not just out of touch, that's Stalinist purge level dystopian. And those despicable fucks have the gall to go on about how they're in favour of "freedom".

It doesn't have to work, it just has to be one of a thousand cuts.

At the least this law will protect teachers that bully trans students, at the most they could start actively prosecuting teachers for using a student's preferred pronouns.

At this point I wouldn’t be at all surprised to hear that Florida had switched to using human skulls as a currency.

LGBTQ+ skulls to be specific.

Who run Bartertown?

How many orphan souls cans I get for 6 skulls?

Florida makes me think that we would be better off with just 49 states.

Just swap Florida and Puerto Rico

That’s fair! Would hardly need to change much, honestly.

Make Florida and Washington DC part of Puerto Rico then admit all 3 as one state.

That way no one is happy.

As a guy living in Florida, I agree with you.

Yo Puerto Rico is dope.

I smell a trade brewing!

TRADE OFFER:

US recieves: Puerto Rico

Atlantic Ocean recieves: Florida

It and the rest of america's dystopian history makes me think america would have been better if they lost the revolutionary war and later gained independence peacefully like Australia for example

I am serious about this opinion

It wouldn't have. The American Revolution inspired revolutions in 60 other countries, including the French, Haitian and Mexican revolutions, and it's what helped kickstart modern-day democracy in much of the world for that fact. Had the U.S. lost, it would have forever cemented the idea that the crown is all-powerful, beyond reproach, and the only way to get anything in life is to kiss the ring.

No matter how evil the U.S. turned out to be, the way it began will always be its true importance imo.

It’s become the boomer republic but it could be so much better.

Won't need to, most of it's gonna be underwater eventually anyway..

And then its hateful citizens will infest other states.

I left Florida in '93, and there were times I regretted it. There were a lot of good things about Florida, and it was always interesting. And once you adapt to the weather, it's nice (if a bit dull).

Now though? Holy fuck I'm glad I'm not there. I don't even understand what's going on there - it's like some sort of mass psychosis. It's gone way beyond a political shift - it's more as if someone decided that the thing to do was to establish some sort of right-wing version of the Khmer Rouge and a bunch of Floridians said, "Yeah! That'd be great!"

At the rate they're going, it's only a matter if time before they start systematically killing "undesirables".

Seriously.

I lived there from 2010-2012 and it was more than enough to realize I would never do that again, esp with a funny foreign name, brown skin, and mixed race daughters. It's sad too, thinking about e.g. Carl Hiaasen or Tim Dorsey, or time I've spent camping in the keys or swimming in fresh water springs in Central Florida. There's clearly some real majestic environmental beauty and culture there but jesus christ has the states human culture gone absolutely to shit.

Utah is similar. Breathtaking natural beauty, but you couldn't pay me to live there.

The folks coming to my area fleeing Florida said the worst of the worst moved there during Covid.

Florida - The Fascist State

The most fascist state, but definitely not the only one. Texas is a close second.

It’s a race to the bottom

How do you ban nicknames? What if they just state this is the name I prefer to be called? People named William being called will or bill, is that a nickname? Why are Republicans so damn stupid? Mfers trying to block porn hub like most the Internet isn't filled with porn.

Hopefully everyone takes it this literally and all the bigoted Bobs/Bills etc feel as stupid as they are.

Next step: thought police that comes after you each time you think about another sex than your own!

That's what the gay agenda has been after the whole time!?

*Nicholasnames

*slow clap

Comments like this almost make me wish Lemmy had awards

youth have been turned into political cannon fodder for generations. we're creating mass poverty and homelessness on a hockey stick curve yet we have to continue to focus all our attention on garbage engineered to divide the population like this. really cool stuff

What about kids that prefer to be called by their middle name? Would that need permission to not be called by their first name? What if they go by their middle name, Edward, but prefer to be called Ed? Would they need two permission forms? Lol

Not a law talking guy, I thought that one of the constantly brought up issues in civil rights cases is selective enforcement of rules. Schools allowed hats but suddenly decided a turban wasn't allowed for example.

@Mon0 Voter suppression is rampant in the US.

My city demographics are about 80% white 20% Asian and the household income average is over 100k. It has changed a bit but it was fairly reliable GOP for a while. My polling place is walking distance from my house. If I am lazy I can drive and there is a massive parking lot. No lines, I have timed it, walking in to getting in the booth in under a minute. We are also (I was a poll worker a few years ago) able to brag that in the entire history of the provisional ballet system we have never once thrown out a vote. The goal is no eligible voter turned away.

The city next to mine is nearly all POC and reliable DNC, they have less places to vote, and every single election there are news reports of multiple hour long lines.

If voting didn't matter they wouldn't be working so fucking hard from denying it to certain groups. Vote vote vote!

I think the only people who vote in state elections are political nerds. The average person in Florida probably didn't know that much about Desantis before he started trying to run for president.

Florida is cancer.

Can we just turn the state into an island and have it float out into the sea?

There is enough trash in the ocean as it is.

Bugs Bunny had the right idea.

A crater there would fill in with water

As an outsider (and someone with this name situation), I'm morbidly curious about what happens when a kid has a name that's the opposite gender as them, either because it's a gender neutral name in their culture, or because their parents just named them like that? Because I have a sneaking suspicion they're suddenly going to be fine with 'unapproved nicknames' when their alternative is calling a boy Vyvian or a girl Terrance

A boy named Sue.

Michael was becoming a common girl's name when I was a kid.

Their own former president Gerald Ford was born Leslie King. Leslie is usually a girl's name, isn't it?

Not so much back then.

Uh... Leslie Caron, Leslie Stahl, Lesley Gore, Lesley Ann Warren...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leslie_(name)

That article has a long list of men named Leslie.

I always thought homeschooling was for kids with crazy parents, but if I had a child in OC Florida I would absolutely homeschool them until we could move somewhere less insane.

At this point, the parents would be crazy to keep living in Florida

If anyone was wondering, Florida's government is safely now within the boundaries of "fascist policy making".

Florida is the darkest timeline.

please saw florida off from the rest off the us bugs bunny

Lol kids should give each other nicknames that are classroom objects and terms from the text. Or names of historical figures. "oh, now we can't say Abraham Lincoln because it's a nickname"

It's only the teachers that can't use nicknames without parent permission, not the kids.

That changes nothing

Sure it does.

It makes teachers wonder why, yet again, they're being forced to bear the brunt of the culture war, and they're going to eventually quit.

Then the schools won't be able to find good teachers, the education system will be further deteriorated, and private schools will become the only schools worth attending, further eroding the future prospects of working-class Floridian children and America as a whole.

I don't think that's the grand strategy at play, I just think the people in charge don't care if it happens, as long as they get enough praise from their voters.

It’s definitely the strategy at play. This is how they ensure themselves a poor and compliant workforce.

Wait, so does that mean if somebody is named Dick, I can’t call them Richard?

So, when will the U.S. be sending their National Guard to Florida like they did during the integration of their southern schools?

The fact that they say "nickname" is insulting. As kids that are trans discover and explore their identity they change their name to match where they're at in their journey. It's not a nickname, it's just simply their name.

We know that, and at some level the enforcers know that, but this is about cutting off all possible loopholes.

The cruelty is the point. This law has no reason to exist other than to directly harm the mental health of trans children.

The Orange County Public Schools (OCPS) system in Florida has announced new guidance that means trans teachers will be misgendered and students will need parental consent for “any deviation” from their legal name.
