Nightfall by Isaac Asimov is one of the most haunting sci-fi stories ever written. It's what happens when rationalism and cosmic horror collide.
Both the short story and the novel are solid. The novel has more detail about what the short story covers, but I personally prefer the short story format because of the pacing. That is just a pwrsonal preference because the novel is just as good.
