Utility knife blade in vice grips succeed where baking soda, household cleaner did nothing

1y 15d ago by lemmy.world/u/pageflight in diy@beehaw.org

Our oven window was totally encrusted. A couple months ago I tried Simple Green, and tried a complicated process of applying baking soda paste and then vinegar, neither of which did anything.

Then today I tried scraping, and a truly disgusting patina peeled right off. Took maybe 20 minutes altogether; a little slow but great result.

scrapings

The window is still a bit hazy, but the accumulated scratch marks are circular, not from my (linear) scraping.

They sell a blade holder that’s specifically made for scraping ovens like this. Got one gifted from extended family in the EU. Idk why I don’t see them over here.

Good job getting yours clean!

You can easily get them online. I just checked. Search for "glass scraper" or "hob scraper".

Thanks, I saw one a while back but didn't know what to call it.

I'm impressed. Do you broil bacon every other day? How is it so caked up?

Previous owner was doing something like that, the hood vents had a good layer too.

I do all my bacon in the oven. I use a cast-iron grill pan with a big-ass spatter shield on top of it. It really cuts down on the spatter. And my bacon comes out crispy with all of the grease down in the grooves of the grill pan.

I still get some spatter, but not near what I would get if I didn't use the spatter shield.

Tip on the tip, flip the blade over every few minutes. You can do this multiple times.
