We have a large foyer closet with a barn door in our house. We wanted to be able to maximize utilization of the space and not sacrifice the barn door. We also did not want to go "full custom built-in" through a cabinet maker. So, after some trips to IKEA to see what was available, and no one specific system fit our closet desirably, I decided to HACK something together with my own two hands from a few different systems.

Our main goals were drawer space (that functioned with the barn door), a tall cabinet that allowed larger items to be hidden such as mops or ironing boards, and plenty of shoe space. The wife also wanted a place to put the Dyson Vacuum.

This closet organization hack involves a combination of the ELVARLI line, PAX line, ALEX Drawer unit, & ENHET door. The major modifications involve cutting the PAX storage frame to fit the ENHET door as well as adjusting hole spacing to mount the hinges for the door on the PAX storage frame. A few modifications were also done to the ELVARLI shelfs and clothes rails to fit the custom widths. ELVARLI bracket for post also had holes drilled for mounting directly to walls, and the ELVARLI post had holes drilled to allow custom shelf and bracket locations.

The ENHET door is exactly 31cm wide by 183cm tall which fit perfectly width wise to allow the barn door to open and leave enough room for the drawers to open as well. The height also fit our needs. The trouble though is the ENHET line does not have a cabinet deep enough. This is where the PAX wardrobe comes in, closest size i found of the PAX was 50cm wide, 58cm deep, and 201cm tall. I ended up cutting off the bottom of the PAX wardrobe side panels to match the 183cm tall ENHET door, and i took off 19cm of the top and bottom shelfs. Joined it al together with wood cabinet screws and then installed the door. You cant even tell its two different systems unless you open the door and look at the back of the PAX wardrobe.

One item still missing in the photo slide show are two more ELVARLI Shoe shelf, to be installed right over the two installed. IKEA still somewhat seems to be low on inventory. My assumption is the system may be being discontinued.

Various Screws, I wont list all the specific screws but the most notable was the following. I used 9 of these screws to join the PAX cabinet with the ALEX Drawer unit. I used the same spacing provided in the PAX pre-drilled holes for shelfs.
