I got hooked on Cloudflare for self-hosting due to being stuck behind a CGNAT. I've since switched it off and, as you suggested, got a cheap VPS. While I know other options exist, CGNAT is a pain point, and much of the self-hosting advice out there suggests Cloudflare.
