WHAT THE HELL KIND OF SHIP IS THAT!? (introduce yourself)

9mon 7d ago by sopuli.xyz/u/Klanky in freestarsuniverse@sopuli.xyz from sopuli.xyz

A thread for everyone to introduce themselves and share some memories about their first encounter with Star Control.

I'll start - I'm klanky and I'm 41/M, live in the mid-atlantic of the US. I don't get much time to game these days with an ADHD 8-year old, but I still enjoy story-rich space adventures and strategy games.

I first encountered Star Control in the form of Super Melee at a friends house in the 90s when we were kids. We didn't even realize it had an adventure game component. Later, around 99/00 I played the CD version of Star Control 2 and fell in love with the universe and characters (RIP Fwiffo in the Sa-Matra battle!). A true sequel to SC2 has been something I never thought I'd see, so I'm super excited for Children of Infinity and looking forward to discussing it and the rich universe and lore with other Lemmings.

I still have my original photocopy of a photocopy starmap with my notes written on it from when I played through the game. I'll get around to posting a picture of it sometime.

Tuukka. A human from a Finland.

I think I must have encountered this game in the form of UQM, probably when browsing what games exist for the Linux distribution I was using at that point – must have been Ubuntu?

It must have been around 20 or 21 years ago, because I remember that I found a very very old laptop on the backyard of an industrial facility. It had a battery life of approximately 45 seconds, which was enough for unplugging at the railway station, running to the train and plugging in the laptop once again. The only thing that computer was good for was playing the original SC2. But I did use it for that very extensively! I was quite surprised to notice that the lander only had the tiny tiny little square to travel on!

Otherwise... 40-year-old, a father to a small number of small and awesome human beings.

Currently playing SC:Origins, which is a surprisingly entertaining game. At least for now it seems that they've just taken the original story of SC2 and basically remade all the assets and renamed all the races seems to work very well. But I am definitely waiting for the real game from Pistolshrimp to be published!

SC2/UQM is absolutely among the very best games ever made!

Welcome! So happy to see someone else who remembers this game here on Lemmy. Also, Finland is awesome and I loved visiting.

I thought SC:O was decent for what it was. Microwave-reheated Star Control with the serial numbers filed off.

Another game that gives me Star Control vibes is Starcom: Nexus. The story isn’t as good but I enjoyed my time with it.
