No I would never "buy" a "Pet" to be "Owned", You can't own other beings. They would be a rescue and they would be a non-human companion / ward.
As for ego, what is more egotistical than thinking someone needs to die just to keep another person alive? Nothing bigger than carnie's ego when it comes to thinking its okay to kill others just so they can have taste pleasure.
You can make that argument for anyone feeding there cat dry kibble then as a cat probably couldn't tell the difference between kibble with meat and the one without as it's so processed anyway.
In general the stuff we feed pets is more like chicken nuggets then chicken breast and you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between a vegan chicken nugget and a real chicken nugget these days.

Killing a small handful of people pales next to the institutionalized torture and murder of billions.
But if we can get them to stop doing it of their own free will, then sure, that would be preferable.
