It may not be the case here, but lots of people who are victims of pedophilia as teenagers don't acknowledge that it was rape when they're adults, because they didn't feel like they were being raped in their memories.
I had a high school buddy who was gay in a very conservative town. He didn't have a lot of dating options at our school, but went online (late 90s and early 2000s) and met adult men in gay chatrooms. He went on dates with guys he met online and had sex with them. He thought he must be super mature for adults to want to hang out and sleep with him.

Epstein wasn't terrible for liking underage girls. Epstein was terrible because he was a predator. So although she is * technically * correct, it does not change in any way shape or form the fact that he, and anyone who partook in his exploits, was a monster.

It means that using the correct term matters, because the crimes he should be convicted of are different based on the age involved.
Even Epstein's island has age of consent laws and degrees of charge that vary by age.
Stupidly enough, at least in the US virgin islands (where that is) your spouse can consent even outside these allowed age ranges most of the time.
Best I can guess is that the point here is that while morally wrong it may not technically be illegal depending on the state.
