Google is adding AirDrop support to Pixel phones

Google just announced some unexpected and welcome news: Pixel 10 owners can now send and receive files with Apple devices over AirDrop.
[...]
"We’re bringing this new experience to Pixel 10 first before expanding to other devices.”

Moriconi confirmed it was not a collab. “We accomplished this through our own implementation,” he tells The Verge.

Pretty cool. I wonder what led Google to develop this and how Apple will react.

That's interesting because this article from Ars talks about how this is a new standard that Apple was made to adopt as part of the DMA.

I wonder if Apple will lock it down further. If they did, it could cause some backlash from users of older devices that are no longer receiving updates.

That being said, there is already an open source option that is completely cross-platform in LocalSend.

As in, it's Airdrop compatible but OS agnostic?

More like cross platform local wifi based file, clipboard sharing app.

I figured.

That great, if you're both connected to the same WiFi network and LocalSend comes pre-installed on both of your devices.

What does it need to be pre-installed?

Because people with iPhones, famously, will refuse to even try to include anyone without an iPhone if it means they need to do anything whatsoever, such as install a new app

Because no one is going to install an app just to receive a photo from you.

I use it all the time between my own devices

Cool!

You think it's single use? Only works the one time? Really?

People are hesitant to install apps. But, when you do install it for them. They delete them immediately thinking its useless and and will waste battery for no reason.

but then they have like 80 garbage apps that do actually do that, make it make sense...

I have stopped arguing and just move on.

Indeed, this is what I use.. Jist i stall Airdrop ffs.

Zero chance of me using Airdop, similary if iMessage was opened, zero chance there as well.

No way Apple doesn't pull some Green Bubble type shit in response, like throttling the fuck out of the speed when it detects it's not an iPhone on the other side

Will be interesting to see how this ends up working out. In the meantime, I shall continue using Localsend
