TL;DR:
Effective January 20, 2026, verified purchasers can download the EPUB and PDF files of your confirmed DRM-free books.

A) you can still absolutely download and de-drm ebooks from Amazon.
B) this is only for books that the publisher selects as unrestricted.
Sure, better than nothing, but Amazon is absolutely not allowing you to move your "purchases" to another service. You remain locked into Kindles if you buy from Amazon and try to follow their rules.
