It's just so useful to just have another one to grab when the one you're using runs out, and let that one charge in the meanwhile. I can also just take two in my bag and never run dry.

Children

Headphones. I have my commuting headphones, walking headphones, working headphones, video game headphones, music headphones... I also have two pairs of earphones.

I could get down to two pairs of headphones and one pair of earphones.

Electric razors. I have one for the left hand and one for the right. I bought one several years ago and was gifted the same model about the same time. Didn't have the heart to tell them I already had one. Turns out shaving with two razers goes pretty fast.

Games I've got through steam or gog, but still pick up if it's free on Epic.

Clerks the animated series dvd sets

Can openers, they're cheap, I keep losing them, buying them, and finding them.

I find that if I really like a product, I don't want to have to go to the trouble of finding a new one in future if I lose/break the first one. Often, even if it's something that you wouldn't realistically expect to break, I'll buy a few of it just in case, like clipboards, or document cases.

Another is consumables. For example, I bought an unusual eraser holder that has replaceable inserts for it. I really like it, so of course I had to buy 20 years' worth of inserts because I can almost guarantee they'll stop making inserts before I'm finished using the product.

For bulk food prep, it's often easier to work in batches. For example, I might make 5 days' worth of breakfasts at once, and store them in the fridge. In that case, I need 5 * <number of people> worth of containers. I also need to account for contingencies: what if a guest stays over? I don't strictly need that many identical containers, but it makes for a good system

Trackballs. Once you make the jump, a world opens up. There's always a better, more comfortable, more feature rich trackball to be had.

Gaming computers. I have a laptop, a desktop, a Steam Deck, a light handheld and a smartphone. Not to mention a few older consoles, but they don't get much use anymore. The others all do.

Keyboards. Wired, wireless, red switch, blue switch, LED, plain, full, half. I like having options.

Nail clippers. I kept losing nail clippers so I bought a pack of 10 and put two in each of the places I'd expect to be able to find them. I think I'm down to only having four now, so it might be time to buy another 10.

Chances to make a change in my miserable, depressive life. It only takes one opportunity to capture, one chance to seize and decide to do things differently, but alas, I'm not there yet. Thankfully, I have multiple - nay - an unlimited amount of chances ahead.

Materialistically speaking, off the top of my head, maybe my physical security keys (Yubico)? I have a backup key so that I don't get locked out of my accounts in case I loose my main key, but I could manage without the backup. Jeesh, it's hard to come up with something material that I have multiple of since I'm a minimalist and literally have like ONE plate and ONE spoon/fork/knife if you catch my drift.

10mm wrenches. Saw a deal online years ago for 20 wrenches for like 20 bucks. I was still doing field work at the the time so 10 and 11 mm were common purchases for me. They didn't break, so there was no need for an expensive warranty. They just got misplaced, usually by a trainee who didnt have their own tools.

It was frustrating because buy even one cheap wrench was $10, but a kit of 8 or 10 wrenches could be bought on sale for $20. I have a few of those kits too, and a few socket kits. I have yet to use most of the pieces in 20 years. I mostlt just needed the 10, 11, and 13mm.

A 20 pack of 10mm for cheap? I couldn't pass that up. Then I stopped working field. Now I have a shed full of tools that I might never use again. Nothing wrong with them except some old batteries maybe. I refuse to get rid of them in case I have to back to field work. But it makes me look like a hoarder.

D&D dice. Metal. Stone. Blinky LED. Cthulhu. So many dice...

I have four copies of Skyrim and haven’t even played it.

I have seven coffee makers (various sorts, sizes, and materials). I use 3 regularly.

More generally, anything that I use frequently, like tools, I have multiples of because I misplace things a lot. Having multiples means it’s more likely to find things when I need them, without having to hunt them down.

Lip balms, nail clippers, and we have a lot of laundry baskets despite living in a 3 room apartment. Two or three per room and three/four in the main laundry collecting area.

Guitars. I have a whole stable, including a couple of electrics (Strat and Les Paul), and a few acoustics (My favorite, a backup, another one with a nice tone that is also electric, and a nice travel/parlor guitar).

I also have a short scale electric bass, and an acoustic bass. Also a couple of nice ukuleles.

I'm still on the hunt for a small all-mahogany acoustic, a 12 string acoustic, and a good semi-hollow body that isn't white, red, or black. I'm also always looking for a good deal on a new electric bass. Also a banjo and mandolin.

I'm not in a band, I don't even play with others, I just like to record my own music, both originals and covers, that nobody ever hears but me. And I delusionally believe I need a shit-ton of guitars to do that.

I have items for home and work:

Most of the year, my work gear is stored in the shed so I have all of these duplicated in the house.

Drills - a fullsized drill at home and a mini one for at work mostly to drive nuts and bolts.

Hand tools - screwdrivers, bits, wrenches, box cutter.

Headlamps - a small AAA at home and a AA at work.

Clothes - Like most people, I have dedicated work clothes.

AA batteries

Phone chargers - Home, car, and work. I also have multiple battery banks.

Headphones - an older corded pair at home and newer BT ones at work.

Double edge safety razors: if I had to choose only one, Rockwell 6S is enough, but they really perform different and have different feel. I mostly use four or five on a daily basis, but it is more than necessary.

Also, fountain pens: it's pretty much the same, TWSBI pen(s) would suffice, but there are too many brands and models with different look and feel, hard to choose only one. Plus in case of pens multiple ones allow for use of different inks at the same time (those I also have multiple compared to the amount that would suffice, even in the same colour)

Forks.

Vacuum Cleaners

We have four.

One lives in my backyard shed, for cleanups and dust collection.

One lives in my garage, for cleaning the cars.

Our house is split level, so we have one for upstairs and another one for downstairs. All to save carrying it up and down the six steps that divide the front and back of the house. These two are the same make and model.

Back in the vinyl phase a few years ago, I bought both a regular cover and an alternate cover of an album.

It was so cool for about 3 seconds, when I realised the record/music were the same. Realised I paid double JUST for a different picture.

I buy my hair gel in liters when the price goes low enough, not when I need it, so have two or three liters sometimes.

I enjoy collecting and modding them more than actually playing lol. Generally I suck at games.

Now I do play them. But I spend a lot more time figuring out better ways to use them and getting the best quality out of them possible, or trying to use og hardware but playing any game (like ps2 over ethernet)

Kidneys and thinkcentres.

Scissors.

Don't need to use them every day, but previously I could never find any of the three pairs I had. Then I realized that I have money and can go buy a dozen pairs of scissors.

Now it never takes me more than 30 seconds to find a pair of scissors. 10/10, would recommend this lifestyle.

I have two teeshirts, but strictly speaking only one is required. This is because of social pressure

I have multiple monitors for entertainment and for work.

I have my main tool set in my utility room, a subset of tools in my main cave and another subset in my garage.

Multiple pairs of jeans.

My kitchen is well provisioned with multiple redundant utensils. Also I have a double oven.

I am in the process of expanding my utility room to have two washers and two driers.

Rock hammers. For, uh...reasons.

Also, as others have mentioned, clothes sets. Work wear is not what I wear on my own time, including shoes. But I could just wear one set (either work or casual) and I don't think anyone would care.

Coffee machines. Three roommates, each one brought theirs.

Well, I have a bunch of stuff around here that serves no real purpose that I'm otherwise sentimentally attached to or think might be useful some day, but I'm not sure I have many duplicates, even loosely speaking.

The best(?) example is probably the fact I have 3 CRT TVs, none of which I use regularly. One is the main house TV but, since I don't use it much, I've never felt the need to upgrade it. The other two are portables that I'm keeping for if I ever get back into 8-bit computers.

Phones. Got my current along with the last 3 I had. I haven't disposed of them because I'm a little paranoid someone would reconstruct the contents of each phone if I just disposed of them.

Also, burned CDs/DVDs that are useless because they don't work. I'm not good and throwing away discs, which is why I still keep them.

I thought about saying loose bread ties, but those are generally so useful for when one breaks or you just need one.

Knives and pocket tools, basses (electric/upright/electric upright), 10 mm sockets

Smol keyboards. Each one was my endgame, but I still like them 🤗

Cajons. I have two, because after I got one my husband loved it and demanded i get another, basically. They are handy as bonus seats and as a barrier to keep dogs out though, on top of just being fun to thwack.

Computers. I could do everything I need to do on my threadripper workstation, but it's not as portable as my gaming rig. I move around a lot for work and wasn't thrilled with my steam decks performance plugged into a TV for some games. Then there is my limited home lab stuff that I could host on the workstation for a minimal hit to power consumption, but why do that when I have tons of older hardware I could piece together to do it. Then there are my multiple Atari STs that I've collected. One of them is my first computer which I've managed to keep for almost forty years. I also have a few classic macs and dozens of video games, all of which I could functionally duplicate with emulation. I like old hardware, and now it's not polluting the environment in a landfill.

Handheld vacuum cleaners, one on each floor.

I have two color laser printers. The old one is a Dell branded printer from about 15 years ago and was about the cheapest color laser printer you could buy at the time. It has some issues now particularly with color printouts, and combined with poor Linux support meant I went ahead and bought its replacement, a much nicer Brother model. But as the old printer can still give acceptable results for some things I'm keeping it until it runs out of toner which could be a while.

On top of that I still have an HP LaserJet 4 but that's been disconnected for a while. Still prints but desperately needs new rollers.

Amplifiers: Mainly because I rescue distressed amps and bring them back to life.

I don't need four power drills, I want four power drills.

Vinyls and CD’s.

I have 3 copies of "London Calling". Original vinyl, CD, and the 25th Anniversary box set.

Earbuds. They're absolutely essential and have the durability of wet toilet paper

I recently converted my stove from gas to induction, but one of the casualties was my griddle top - steel griddle covering the entire stove. I loved playing short order cook or having all that space to toss around fried rice. I keep telling myself I don’t need something like that but those Blackstone grills keep drawing me in

I play a lot of airsoft. That alone isn't very useful in day-to-day life, except for cardio.

But I own eleven airsoft guns. Mostly pistols.

Airsoft, combined with my love for the Payday games and John Wick movies, is also the only reason why I own any three-piece suits.

3 macbooks and 4 iphones. And I spent $0 on them. They are all retired devices from work.

After thinking about this a bit and reading through this thread, I realized I might have a problem about always wanting spare things. I have more than one of a lot of things - lip balm, battery banks, phone & watch charging docks, dogs, headphones and earbuds (even two of the same kind), computers, pillows (I have spares of my main and body pillows), and the list goes on. I apparently need to re-evaluate my habits.
