Walnut globe decanter stand thingy I've just finished

4mon 2d ago by lemmy.world/u/CelloMike in woodworking@lemmy.ca

Friends had this bottle that had lost its stand, asked me for a replacement, super happy with the result. First time I've managed a proper glossy finish that I'm actually pleased with

That is quite a nice finish, may I ask your process?

Sanded up to 800, then sprayed with water to raise the grain, sanded back again up to 1200, then 3 coats of gloss poly sanding with 2000 in between

No idea if it's the "right" way to do it but it felt right in the moment 😆 was tricky to sand down in the gap between the arm & base though so those surfaces aren't quite as good, fortunately they're not really visible

It is my understanding that sanding wood beyond 220 grit or so is a burnishing rather than an abrading process, which does smooth the wood but makes it less absorbant, that may have helped the poly build up on the surface rather than soak in.

Cool, it's meant for magical potions, right? The friends you got the bottle from must be powerful wizards or witches...

I really like the shape, it’s very refined

I love how it looks so thinly balanced

Beautiful anf shiny! Incredible job.

Gorgeous. Love the grain and the form

Etch a world map into the glass.

Doesn't show up well in the pictures but there already is one :) that's why I went with the shape

Such a big north pole

The pole she tells you not to worry about

Nice, i can see it now. Looks really cool.

Damn, that looks good. Great job, man!

Beautiful.

Good work.

You should put a bong in it.

Beauty

How well does it do with earthquakes?

This kills the whiskey

Wizard workbench vibes. I feel my INT score would go up by +2 just by owning it. Nice work.

Nice piece.
