This wouldn’t be a problem if we didn’t have unrealistic beauty standards for pdf files
Dammit, made me chuckle.
Fine, enjoy your compelled upvote.
I mean the bigger problem is on the download, not upload. Many of those sites are inserting malware in your files.
But there are actually some sites that are open source, self hostable, and don't actually require you to upload files at all, they're processed on your local machine. Some examples are:
- Mazanoke for photos
- vert.sh for images audio docs and video
- pdfding and Stirling pdf for pdf docs
Some actually local examples are:
- constrict (Linux/flathub) for simple video compression
- handbrake (IYKYK)
This is my main issue with the idea of the paid tool OP is selling, if it isn't open source there isn't an easy way to confirm that no malicious transformations were applied to the file.
this whole post is an ad... 💀
And it’s getting posted on every other community. It’s actually a great point that hadn’t occurred to me (not a tech person, but it does seem really obvious now, so no excuses there) that you’re sending the contents of your docs to the processor you use. I was mostly concerned with safe downloads of the finished product, but I’ve sent ilovepdf at this point 400+ pages of master’s level work on German grammar. I wonder if it’s been used in training AI in German yet.
It is open source. You download a standalone html document and can inspect and even modify the code. Open source ≠ FOSS. And like I said, if you have Linux you can do it for free with Ghostscript.
Do you have a recommendation for converting macOS .plist files to HTML? Trusted service or Mac app.
HTML or XML? If XML, you can use the built-in plutil in Terminal. If not, ignore me. 😊
Didn’t know that was built in, thanks. But yeah, I’m trying to convert to HTML so I can have a media player’s play history in a readable format outside of the app.
I haven't tested yet, but ChatGPT claims plutil will export to html too
And here you place an ad for paid software that's also a black box. What am I missing?
No you don't get it, it's local therefore is secure, yeah it's not open source but it's local.
But for real now dolphin + ark is so much easier
Is this sarcasm? 🧐
No, this is Patrick.
This is a hidden ad. Don't be fooled.
Not an ad, I gave other free alternatives in the post and also gave my own solution to an existing problem. Not hidden, if I wanted to hide I wouldn't have posted from my account. I promise I won't get rich from your $14.50, I take pride in creating OS tools that also help with privacy. Feel free to carry on.
Are people really so ignorant that they don't know Linux and Windows have built in compression tools?
Wait, I answered my own question.
Free as in Ghostscript? Yeah, a lot of dummies can't even read a paragraph of text, imagine that!
I worked with a guy that did this with enterprise level data in files. we're talking, PII, keys, contracts, passwords, anything.
I pointed it out to him that he's literally attaching that file to a remote server that's outside of our control and actually broke PCI requirements.
they shrugged and said that the chances of it were low.
this was a decade ago.
people are lazy stupid pieces of shit, and I remember them every time someone asks me for my info.
BentoPDF is a good self-hosted option.
I didn't know it existed, thanks anon
What about iLovePDF?
It works wonderfully. If you like uploading your personal information to god knows who, then by all means keep using online platforms.
