And then NixOS is a t4t polycule

A what?

t4t - trans for trans = two trans people dating

polycule = polyamory, but not every person is dating each other. For example, in a 4 person polycule, maybe person a, c, and d are romantically together, but person a doesn't date b. Person b ONLY dates person c. Etc.

Some people make memes/jokes about polycules, like "The weakest one of the polycule gets kicked off the island" and stuff like that, or this fascinating Tumblr heritage post (links to RedLib instance) about a polycule commune cult in Portland.

So in this case the OP feels that using NixOS is like being in a polycule with a bunch of trans people, or that it will encourage you to transition and join a polycule.

Thanks you for the explanation :)

And here I assumed 10 hours ago that it's some super complex high dimensional shape with a fancy name.

Holy hell, what did I just read? That link is Internet gold. People don't believe it's real, but I have seen enough that it might be after all.

It's real

Polycule doesn't necessarily mean everyone is dating everyone else.
If you look at a molecule, typically you'll have clusters where each node is connected to each other node, and a branch or two reaching out, maybe with other clusters here and there.

Polycule doesn't necessarily mean everyone is dating everyone else.

Yeah, that's why I said:

polycule = polyamory, but not every person is dating each other.

Funny though, your comment made me finally realize why it's called polyCULE. I had no idea it came from molecule.

Oh sorry, I misread

Trans for trans

Nix with Lix

Stop doxxing me 😂

Am on fedora, got no butt, however beard on my neck is growing faster than before

This will take about 5 years to fully install

DNF stands for Did Not Finish for a reason

Fun fact: if you expand the acronyms in DNF, it's Dandified Yellowdog Updater Modified

Like, from Yellow Dog Linux? Was my first Linux distro as a kid (grew up with an Apple computer). Red Hat based so checks out. TIL.

You forgot to remove the default Testosterone and install the Estrogen package instead.

Me on Nobara got beard on my butt instead

I've been trying out Garuda for a while, my beard is basically everywhere. I look like a refrigerator cosplaying Bigfoot. My nonbinary ass would settle for being able to go back to the Windows end of the pipeline at this point.

me on ultramarine got beard behind my balls

Went from Windows directly to Arch and I just became an anarchist and (I'd argue) more masculine. Guess it's less about Trans and more about becoming more true to yourself.

Free software -> free expression pipeline

Certainly feels like a doomer windows user to hopeful anarchist pipeline to me as well.

The free to free pipeline is real.

Sounds familiar, although i now use Guix. For me though i felt like it was more cyberpunk's fault for turning me towards anarchy. Johnny Silverhand be spitting some facts lol.

Ha! I have yet to play cyberpunk, but it's definitely on my list. As for anarchism, I think my move to Linux recently has been more of a solidification of my radicalization that was seeded by my love for punk and strongly cultivated by my time in the Marine Corps. I think the general public would be shocked by how many of us become Communist/Anarchist/Socialist because of our time in the US military.

Oh that's interesting. I think i saw a thread on reddit earlier this week where they also talked about how many people that have been in the military before became very anti-government afterwards. I can definitely recommend cyberpunk, especially now that it's all patched up. I should probably replay it myself at some point, cause i haven't played the dlc yet, and i also finished the game right before they did the huge skill tree overhaul. Also, not really a big spoiler or anything, but Silverhand also has a military background, so i guess it all lines up lol.

Ooo its me! Hello.

From Windows to Arch? You must be a serial killer

Okay, tbf, I'm using cachyos as opposed to raw dogging Arch from the start. I've also used some Linux distros in the distant past, though I can't remember the few outside of one of the early Ubuntu releases. Also, I've done a good smattering of IT work and programming throughout my life, so while I'm already fine with jumping into something having no idea what's going on, I already had enough experience to not be too worried about things.

I went from windows directly to arch and I don’t look that good.

give it time 👍

Nonsense. I can attest you're a certifiable fuckin' snakk

It's because you skipped the transition process.

Not my fault that Linux wasn’t legal and/or easily obtained when I was younger🥲

Stop trying to make Linux a sex thing.

~$ make sex

... it doesn't happen for everyone tho :'''''(

- this message was written from Tumbleweed by user wearing lederhosen, and leather socks

Beware straying from the pipeline!!

Those are fuckin cute. Where can I get some?

step1: install Windows XP
step2: install openSUSE
step3: put your legs in front of the screen with neofetch, take a pic
step4: wait 2-3 business days to get your cute socks delivered in the correct size

Does openSUSE provide the sandals to go with the socks?

I don't think they even provide the socks, they just appear.
I bet if you wish really hard foss angels will provide you some cute pink sandals too!

Actually those socks would probably go great with my birkenstocks. I've been fetishized for being a second generation immigrant from Germany a few times before, why not lean in to it

Ok leather socks are something I'd never considered and on one hand: hot, but on the other hand I can't imagine what shoes I'd wear them with. Obviously the pants would be leather short shorts at the most or a tight leather dress

Assless lederhosen & barefoot ofc.
We are a respectable community after all.

If you dislike leather you can still belong to the club (and manipulate photos) if you go shiny:

Currently on Arch.

Hell yeah, I'll be a hot woman in no time.

We used to do the same joke, just about beard length instead. I'm not complaining tho

Yeah isn't funny that the joke about Unix/Linux users was they all had bigger beards than lobster fishermen, and now it's that they're all transfem.

Good news for cos cis (ducking autocorrect) men: If you started your journey before 2015, this scale is represented by a 19U beard instead.

What about sin men

Why not tan?

Well, for one there's the increased skin cancer risk.

Started LONG before 2015.

Still can't grow a beard worth a damn.

Same. I started in 1998 when I was 15, but I was unable to grow a beard until my 30s.

Now in my 40s I'm far away from 19U, but I have this:

(No, that's not me, but I do have a very similar beard, just not as white)

My dad said that he was late when it came to beard growth, but it meant that the men in our family would never grow a bald spot. Anecdotal evidence suggests this might be true, so I was curious if this is a correlation outside of my family?

Not you... Well damn I was briefly really excited to run into Jordan Rudess on Lemmy!

I'm just barely older than you, and started with Linux when I was just a bit younger.

I could basically do a goatee and nothing else but sparse hairs on the side. I'm definitely thinning out up top though.

All real trans girls use NixOS

Source : I'm a trans girl. Me and literally every other trans girl I know uses NixOS (and I know several dozens)

It seems like there's some universal truths in the tech industry: trans women use NixOS and code in Rust, and a lot of network admins are furries.

Not trans, but now I was to try Nix and code in Rust.

Am fedora user, where ass?

Do squat? Source fedora squatter

"I'm a Mac."

"And I'm a PC."

"...and I'm a catgirl. Nya btw :3"

Oh fuck yeah I'm already at the end of the pipeline

Ya know... the fact that I actually went from Windows to Mint to Fedora raises some concern.

same here, but to be fair i would still use mint if i hadn't had so many issues with it

I will be honest with ya, if I looked better in dress than a shirt I would wear it. No Linux needed.

You just gotta keep shopping, I'm sure you can find one that flatters you.

This is an aside but why is this the highest quality version of this image I've seen? I swear whenever I see this meme it looks like it's been faxed, scanned, compressed, jammed onto a floppy disk, ripped from the floppy disk, and then posted.

I'm using Fedora because my ass be lookin' fine.

Can confirm

My journey: DOS > Win 3.1/95/98/2000/XP/Vista/7 > Mac OS > Win 10/11 > Mint > Arch/Debian

Feels good to have finally arrived.

DOS > OS/2 > FreeBSD > Debian > Gentoo > Ubuntu > Mint

I am one step behind you.

Something to look forwards to!

Anyone told you bout NixOS? It's off-charts, but the secret true final destination...

Why do people seem to dislike mint? I like mint it works with a minnimum of bullshit.

It's a "beginner-friendly" distro so people might subconsciously think you should "graduate" to use something "better".

Which is ridiculous, of course. No reason to switch if it works for you!

I don't know, I installed Mint last year and it's been great.

I don't think it's a dis.  It's just what people usually recommend to people used to Windows, traditionally at least.  Because it's familiar and just works.

We're still somehow not over the hipstery conceit that anything with mass appeal is inherently flawed.

Hipsters:

likes something different/uncommon

makes it cool

...

"Ugh. That's so mainstream."

judges everyone for liking it.

I can't speak for others, but for me it works like a charm.

Because it's becoming mainstream. And for some people, that means they have to dis on it to feel special.

Use the OS/Distro that works for you. If Windows or MacOS hits the spot for you, use that. There are no wrong answers here.

I just don't like the organizational structure of its maintainers as much as I like Debian's, but that's just a personal quirk. There's no wrong answer because the right answer is subjective.

They don't dislike it, it just doesn't make them look edgy. And some people like to (which is fine BTW).

I've started on Conectiva in the nineties, Debian, Ubuntu, and settled on Mint. I'll probably switch to LMDE if at all at this point.

I'm in my EndeavorOS cycle at home right now and neither do I get cuter nor more feminine, is it because my daily driver is still on Mint and my second work-laptop is still a Windows machine that my employer makes me leave on Windows?

Definitely because of Windows.

Note to self: convince cute guy friend to try Mint.

Thanks for the tip.

Help! I just installed fedora last night and my ass grew, its fat af, what do I do?!?

Personal: DOS -> Win3.1/95 -> BeOS -> WinXP -> MacOS -> Win10 -> Ubuntu -> Debian

There was definitely some dual booting in there, particularly in the BeOS (to Windows for Games) and Win10 (to Ubuntu for work) eras.

Professional: Debian -> RHEL -> WinXP -> Win7 -> Ubuntu -> gLinux/ChromeOS -> Ubuntu -> MacOS -> Ubuntu -> MacOS/Ubuntu

He/she grew boobs in fedora? In this case, sign me up!

Been a Linux user for 20 years. Still hate Fedora. Don't have a desire to try arch. Love mint and Debian.

I can't imagine the confusion you have saved yourself to not learn 400 different package managers and all the other qwirky differences beween distro types.

Unfortunately I'm in IT. Including a short stint as a Linux sysadmin for 4 years. I had to learn all the others and often used them. But I had 0 desire to use them outside of work, not even a little.

Where is Debian?

It's orthogonal. It's the ftm axis.

Why no Gentoo :( ?

I guess adding Gentoo would make NSFW tag mandatory

👆

I use arch btw

Arch Linux user since 2016. Still look like a male nerd. What am I doing wrong

Estrogen helps

Is it necessary?

If you want to optimize your system, yes.

I don't want to fall behind! Have to start it right now!!

No but the programmer socks are

I went balls deep into Cachy OS on my mini pc to try out Linux.

It's a trap!

Holy shit, I did start using Fedora and compression pants at the same time . . .

I'm in the Endeavour phase, but I think my stockings are better. Otherwise maybe my secondary Ubuntu box is holding me back.

Also, getting older feels counter to getting hotter :(

I went from windows to Manjaro to Fedora :p

Well I'm living proof that's not true.

Damn it

I've been using Linux since IDK over 25 years. But I have multiple devices and frequently distro hop. Currently, Bazzite on SteamDeck, a CachyOS upgraded from an Archlinux on Laptop, Fedora Kinolite on a different one and a tablet, QubesOS on a third, OpenSuse MicroOS on a container host, Debian on a Server and another container host, Archlinux on another server, bunch of OpenWrts on routers and switches, NixOS on some RaspberryPies and a build server, some Debian based Proxmox PVE systems...

So... I guess I'm just confused on my identity on that pipeline.

Same. Mine was Fedora, CentOS, Ubuntu, FreeBSD, Mint, Solaris, Red Hat, Red Hawk, a bunch of other stuff to Arch and maybe Parrot or Bazzite soon. I like privacy and games.

...genderfluid?

My version of this, and I bet I'm not alone here is more like

Windows -> Linux Mint -> Debian

[ Picture of grumpy yet somehow friendly old graybeard with one foot into his "goose farmer retirement" equivalent ]

Win - Mint - Tumbleweed

Mint 😭

I went from windows to mint to debian .. did I fuck up?

There are many paths in life, and you chose to follow your own. There is no better way than that.

Windows -> Mandrake/Mandriva -> Fedora -> Ubuntu -> Debian -> Manjaro -> Arch -> NixOS -> CachyOS -> PikaOS

My journey: windows 10 - Arch - Gentoo

Jesus H. No fear in this user.

I was just bored, and had a lot of freetime

my journey:

win7, win10, win11, LXMint, ArchLX

From XP to... whatever the fuck I need

I went in the reverse direction!

Change Arch to NixOS and change EndeavourOS to Arch

If you switch to Arch you have security vulnerabilities due to firewall not being setup automatically and some other issues. If you don't know, probably better to stick with Endeavor. I have Arch and love but it's a pain in the ass when combined with Hyprland, which is also a bit bleeding edge and hard to maintain.

idk if I'm understanding you exactly but these memes are just memes based on stereotypes. it doesn't mean people will assume you are person #4 in this image if you use endeavouros. it's just making fun of things

Maybe I shouldn't have installed Mint on my dad's old laptop that won't run Windows 11. 🤔

I haven't gotten the fembiy update yet. Anyone know how to fix this?

Shit, I think CachyOS and its gaming optimization made me jump to the end.

I am in the exact pipeline. But instead of mint, I used zorin for a year. Now on EOS from Fedora.

I don't think I'll ever use Arch, it's way too involved. I'll stick with Fedora on my Main system and Bazzite on my Steam Deck.

EndeavourOS is pretty much set up and go and it's just Arch under the hood.

Maybe I'll give EndevourOS a shot then.

This is inf act exogenous steroids and not Linux distributions

I got a Linux VM on my phone, on two of my laptops, run Arch on my main, installed Zorin on my wife's and my parent's notebooks and have Cachy on my PS4 and on my Switch.

When do I get to look good?

Any minute now, right guys?

Lol, I just made one of my friend try mint....

I went from Mint directly to arch, back to endeavour, fedora, OpenSuse and currently I'm using manjaro on my PC and fedora on my laptop. Endeavour was also a very good experience. I can only recommend it.

OpenSuse however was a total Desaster. I couldn't switch back to X11,bricked my window system in an attempt of trying so and it even broke so bad, that on all of my older system snapshots (that were older than my attempt of trying to switch to X11) I did not have Internet even tho my LAN cable was connected.

Interesting. In Tumbleweed, one can switch between X11 and Wayland with a simple toggle in the login screen. I haven't experienced any issues going back and forward.

That exact toggle button did not exist on my machine (idk why), so I installed tried to force x11 by disabling Wayland in some config file and that bricked everything. Idk how, I did not bother enough to fix it, since that installation was kind of fucked anyway and moved on to manjaro. It took probably only about 1 month from the installation to this.

To be precise, it is not a "toggle button" as such, it is a menu at the bottom left that is defaulted to X11 but can be switched to Wayland. Tumbleweed also has snapshots. I don't know how messing around with Wayland could make even launching into a snapshot impossible but I never messed with Wayland/X11 either.

Well, i could boot into the snapshots, but I didnt have Internet. I have no clue how the fuck this is even possible, but it happened anyway.

You don't need internet to rollback to a previous snapshot before you nuked your system files by editing that config to turn Wayland off. But given that this is in the past, it is water down the river I guess.

I literally booted back into the old snapshot (I could switch between them in the boot menu). It was fully functional, except Internet.

I am on linux mint and want switch to fedora. I'm in this picture and I kinda like it.

To fit knoppix into this, I would need to back the windows exit date off by a decade or so.

OpenSUSE user since about 2005/2006.

My headcanon (in this theme) is OpenSUSE being a tall androgynous-y female tomboy cosplaying as a strait-laced male exec done up in the latest tailored pinstripe German banker fashion, including matching waistcoat and fedora, with black trenchcoat suavely draped over the shoulders and hands in black leather gloves. And with the hair having just enough length and curl to be barely toeing past the line of decorum.
