I'm Bulgarian and this is a really fun Bulgarian tradition. You basically make a fuck ton of noise while wearing these super heavy costumes, to scare bad spirits away. They (as in, these "creatures") have many names and I think surrounding countries have their own versions of them. I know them as "kukeri"
