The year 2023 witnessed a dual cinematic resurgence of the Cthulhu Mythos through the independent features Older Gods and Gods of the Deep.

In Older Gods, directed by David A. Roberts. The film’s protagonist, Chris Rivers (Rory Wilson), is investigating the death of his friend Billy (Ieuan Coombs), who became obsessed with an article titled “The Primordial Fear.” This obsession led Billy and his partner, Paula (Lindsay Bennett-Thompson), to travel the world, documenting individuals who sought comfort in a deity named “The Origin.” This deity is not a source of salvation but a “sleeper” whose awakening would result in the destruction of everything.

Charlie Steeds’ Gods of the Deep excels is its use of practical effects. The film features a physical Cthulhu prop designed by Midnight Studios FX. In an era dominated by computer-generated imagery (CGI), the presence of a three-dimensional entity that takes up space in the material world provides a sense of weight and mass that digital effects often lack.
