James Gunn confirms "The Authority" is no longer in development

@idontbeatgames: Random thought but I wonder if DC Studios has made any major progress on The Authority film

@ted.kendrick: James Gunn himself was almost certainly the writer/director on The Authority, but he couldn’t quite nail the script. He hasn’t explicitly admitted he was the creative force behind the film, but when discussing the project, he slipped up once saying “I couldn’t— I mean, the writer…” and then knowingly laughed it off with the interviewer.

@jamesgunn: Just a normal slip of the tongue. I would have never had time to do this and although I know this is a popular theory online I never had an intention of writing or directing The Authority. The script wasn't quite there but more importantly it didn't work in terms of the larger DCU both in terms of the story and practical concerns. Maybe some day. Not soon.

That's a shame.

I'm a big fan of Superman. I'm a big fan of Batman. But the one thing I really look forward to with these superhero films are new heroes.

On the DC side look at the Black Adam film, less so Black Adam himself (he isn't the worst, but not the point) but Doctor Fate, Hawkman, Atom Smasher, Cyclone. Pierce Brosnan as Doctor Fate killed it.

And for the MCU? Shang-Chi! How he wasn't center stage for phases 4, 5 & 6 I'll never know.

I know we have to establish our universe with the big characters, and I like our big characters, but weird or new stuff like The Authority, that's what I want.

He can't or the new bosses don't want? Because a superhero film where the big guns are a gay couple... With the new bosses...
