I stil don't know why they thought it was ok to be this on saturday morning cartoons for young kids to watch back on the day. Ren and Stimpy

What rolls down stairs, alone or in pairs, rolls over your neighbours dog?

It fits on your back, it's great for a snack

Its log log log!

Its loooog, its loooog, its big its heavy its wood!

It’s looog, it’s looog!

It’s better than bad, it’s good!

Things like this are why I like Lemmy people.

Log, from Blammo!

[ending jingle]

LOG!

*from Blammo(tm)!

Have you seen the price jump for LOG! lately? And people complain about gas prices...

I used to watch this on MuchMusic, it was so disturbing and funny

my car

Because kids love gross-out humor? Lmao

Nearly every 4-10 y.o. I’ve known in my lifetime had “fart,” “poop,” “butt,” and “booger” as their top most said words of the day. The remainder was yammering about their favorite TV shows and books/toys. And bugs. And rocks.

I met Bob Camp once in Atlantic city. He told me very many strange things about his life as an animator but when I told him that those close-ups haunt me in my dreams he simply laughed and said "Yeah! We call 'em Gross-Ups! It was our favorite thing to make!"

The gross up close up. It's one of my favorite techniques.

EDIT: In fact I saw great use of it in a new cartoon pilot that I quite enjoyed: Gnome Show

I was lucky enough to buy some animation cells from him when he came to our local con.

None of those overlapped with Ren and Stimpy. All of those were for the parents of the kids watching cartoons on Saturday mornings, the sole exception being the Satanic Panic from the 80s (which involved the duplicate article you posted about D&D).

Ren and Stimpy was allowed because the people who would cry foul were too cheap for basic cable and didn't know it existed.

lol, this was on when I was growing up and I, along with a great many of my peers, were rolling with undiagnosed ADHD, autism, depression, etc, because the teachers and adults around us didn't know shit about mental health, and didn't help any of us.

Have we reached the point now for my generation that younger people assume those times were better, where people were magically wiser etc, and where older people have rose tinted glasses and start telling the youth how much more mentally healthy everyone was, etc?

People were people then just like they are now. People had mental health problems then just like they do now. It wasn't heaven on Earth, it was just a few decades ago, that's all.

The 90’s were a special time that we didn’t fully appreciate until they were gone.

I loved the 90s, hit em at the right age

One my greatest dilemmas is how much I love Ren and Stimpy's first seasons but I absolutely despise John Kricfalusi. I can't even downplay his hand on the show, the humour comes straight out of his sick mind and I love it.

Maybe we should arrest guys like him and, instead of putting them in jail and letting them rot there doing nothing, force them to make cartoons. There may be some untapped potential there.

I didn't know about Kricfalusi. Damn.

Edit: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Kricfalusi

See "sexual abuse allegations".

Yeah he's pretty horrible. I try to pretend he was switched with a bad clone...but that doesn't do much

Yeah the guy was a real piece of shit, sadly the show felt worse when he left the staff and they continued the seasons. It was for the best though since he should have been in jail, rather someone be help acountable than a dumb tv show have better episodes.

SPACE ……… MADNESS!

Oh, my beloved ice cream bar...
...how I love to lick your creamy center!
And your oh-so-nutty chocolate covering!
You're not like the others. You like the same things I do. Wax paper... boiled football leather... DOG BREATH!

You have obviously not watched the brain rot videos kids watch today. Ren and Stimpy is like reading a dictionary in comparison.

Yeah, no kids or adults ever like this sort of thing. It definitely isn't mainstream and wildly popular.

spongebob looking gross

It was ok lol. My dad was the one to put me on Ren and Stimpy. It gave me a huge love and appreciation for cartoons and animation in general.

The animators of Ren and Stimpy felt like they put a lot of love in that show. Their enjoyment of their job shines through.

Ren and Stimpy is my favorite Nickelodeon show.

Ren: "You know Stimpy. Your wealth of ignorance astounds me."

Stimpy: "Well they don't call me stupid for nothin' "

Wow. Ren and Stimpy in the wild. My namesake.

YOU BLOATED SACK OF PROTOPLASM!!!

aaannddd you know what else im gonna do?

Im gonna hit ya....

....aaaanddd youre gonna fall down....

Lol. 90s cartoons were something else.

....aaaand I'mmm gonnnnna laauughfff

It was on SNICK on Saturday night

Eventually it was on in the mornings too, but yeah it started as a SNICK thing

It was on cable TV, not everyone had this at the time it aired

Also it was part of Snick. Saturday night Nick. It wasn't a morning cartoon

It was part of the original Sunday lineup of Nicktoons! Along with Doug and Rugrats. Ahhh Real Monsters and Rocko's Modern Life joined them a few years later. They syndicated and moved R&S around quite a bit, probably trying to make their money back on it or find a timeslot it fit into well. It moving to late nights and other channels with the much later Adult Animation Show did confuse the issue for many people, but I assure you it used to come on weekend mornings and was a trip to live through. You'd finish watching the wholesome adventures of a band of babies, and then in under 10 minutes a man made of toast is shoving cats between his buttcheeks.

It really is astounding that John Kricfalusi isn't in jail and stayed working for so long.

Now that you mention it that does sound right. The only thing of his I've ever seen other than original Ren and stimpy is some contribution to a little collection of short stories.

It was about a baby duck that was really tall that shit itself constantly? It was really trying too hard

I'll teach your grandmother to suck eggs!

I told you i'd shoot, but you never believed me....whyyyy didn't you believe me

Whillikers! It's so big.

I think it aired at 9pm on Saturdays, though?

Yeah, it wasn't a Saturday morning cartoon. It was on MTV in the evenings.

That was the reboot. The original aired on Nickelodeon, but a more "adult" version was made for MTV after the initial got canceled.

I didn’t see a time slot in the Wikipedia article. I was just going off of memory. My memory is telling me that it was late afternoon when nicktoons started and proper evening when ren n stimpy came on.

Yeah, it was all ages stuff most of the day Saturday (I think for a time Nick Jr was a midday block on Nickelodeon), then Nicktoons, then SNICK which was for tweens and teens starting at like 7:30 or 8PM, after little ones usually go to bed during the school year.

Ren & Stimpy was on at 9PM for sure.

The younger generations simply aren't going to understand the concept that there were specific times when your shows came on, and if you didn't stop everything and turn it on immediately you might miss the first ten minutes.

Oh, and if you missed an episode? Tough, it might be a year or more before the next rerun...

"They" made the right decision. Without Ren and Stimpy there would not have been a successful SpongeBob SquarePants. Also, a booger collection under an end table? Genius!

Idk I always thought these hyper detailed stills were pretty funny

“Gross-ups”!

Even more striking is when you look into the creation of Ren and Stimpy and how he kept his job and is still enjoying a free life.

By far I think the most extreme part that I probable wouldn't wantnkids watching is either the ghost suicide episode or the one where Ren verbally tells Stimpy and his own cousin how he's gonna basically kill them.

Otherwise, it was a weird and at times grossout show that I wouldn't mind letting a kid watch, creator aside.

There are many episodes that I wouldn't consider save for kids now but back in the days they ran the show some time from morning till noon in Germany. Which I gladly watched as a pre schooler (I'm not ok for some other reasons). But a few weeks ago I watched the Sammy Mantis episode which haunts me until today. I guess it was also banned from German TV because it felt fresh but what a ride watching everyone shivering with anticipation to become the next one being beheaded on stage. Stimpy in the end even wishing his mother could see him... Well... Congratulations, I thought I've seen them all.

There must be episodes I have forgotten because I don't remember that Sammy Mantis episode. Huh, guess I gotta rewatch the series for other messed up things I forgot about.

Probably because it ran on Sat nights not Sat mornings.

and this isn't even the most disgusting scene. I grew up watching this and I am ok (no I am not help me)

We are ok because we don't pee on electric fences.

Ah right, thanks Ren & Stimpy for saving my life!

={🎼 I wish you would step back from that ledge my friend..cut ties with all the lies that you've been living in... and if you do not want to see me again I will understand....

Ah. The good ol days when "cartoons are for kids". I think South Park finally shattered that illusion.

The Flintstones was originally run at prime time for adults and their families. This wasn't broken by South Park. Even the Simpsons did it before South Park did it

I mean it was awesome

You should see the shit they watch now.

On second thought, don't

Don't forget about toast!

And what do you want to drink, Kowalski?

MEAT!

What's the problem? That's just me from morning to lunch.... and until evening and bed.

Yeah, as a little kid I hated seeing this on TV, it felt really creepy and disgusting. I still don't like it :-(

Have you got any rubber walrus protectors?

Something came out of your butt? And it made and sound? And it smelt funny?

Because they didn't think that and it wasn't.

Try some good old German tales like "struwwelpeter". Was fun growing up ^^

Dit it actually air saturday mornings? Or some weeknight past 8pm?

That was never on Saturday morning cartoons. The Denise if the Saturday morning occurred by the beginning of the 90s. Ren and Stimpy was after and on Nickelodeon. Saturday morning cartoons was on the big 3.

A motivator for why people are confused was because of the adult version that came later.

People are way to fragile today I feel. When I was a kid, I watched this with my parents. It was perfectly fine then and it should be now.
