Dusk - Official Release (Twilight Princess PC Port)

1mon 8d ago by piefed.social/u/simple in games from www.youtube.com

Holy shit I need to figure out how to do this!

https://github.com/TwilitRealm/dusk

I think the hard part will be finding/dumping your own gamecube rom. Otherwise, the instructions are pretty easy:

Download Dusk

Windows / macOS / Linux:

  1. Extract the .zip file
  2. Launch Dusk
  3. Press Select Disc Image and provide the path to your supported game dump
  4. Press Play!

Wasn't ironically the first game to enable this Twilight Princess? A buffer overflow in the horse's name, I think.

🎼 memoriieeess.

These days you just need to get the Wii online and do the EULA DNS hack, fully automated

You don't even need a game anymore.

Oh nice, how? Wilbrand?

Bannerbomb has been around for years and has never needed a game

https://wii.hacks.guide/str2haxdoesn't require an old firmware

Huh. I'm almost certain I've done Bannerbomb on 4.3 systems before, and in fairly recent memory too.

Yes, it works on 4.3

Crap, I missed the GC part. I have the Wii version.

Support for other versions of the game is planned in the future.

You might still be in luck

Thanks. Unfortunately I have/had the Wii version (I hope I still have it somewhere) but the Wii is not modded so may prevent some hurdles for me.

Been playing this, and it's great! Started right up at 9x resolution, wasn't too hard to setup a high quality texture pack, and the game is looking sharp at 4k/120 without any issues!

Things look great, and this launching with features like gyro aim, free cam, and QoL like fast climbing and skipping that damn rupee cutscene is phenomenal.

Also, man, can't wait to come back to this in a year or two with a randomizer and whatever other features they can pack in here.

I’m glad we have high res options but I always immediately set these to 1x res. I ❤️ the jaggies.

To be fair, at this time the game was still being designed on CRTs (LCDs existed but everything except footprint size was a downgrade - and they still are if you ask me), so the intended way to play the game from the artists perspective is still at 1x on a CRT, which effectively masks pixels edges with the CRTs inherent picture softening.

Yeah, I love that they so easily provide a "faithful" and "enhanced" version. One button at startup and it runs just like it would on the GameCube, or you can go all out like me!

Can you toggle between modes, I wonder? I installed a mega high rez texture pack on Ship of Harkinian and toggling between old graphics and high-rez textures was mindblowing hahaha

You can toggle everything except the texture pack right now, unfortunately. The live reloading is super rad, I've had a blast toggling bloom on and off and laughing at how generic the game looks without it.

I think textures are a fairly new feature, you currently just throw them in an unmentioned folder and it works. But I've heard one of the devs is apparently looking into modding support, so hopefully texture packs can be distributed via mods, and easily enabled/disabled there, similar to Majora's Mask Recomp.

Noted, thank you! It’s not a big problem if I can’t toggle texture packs. I’m excited to try this! I’ve only played for a couple hours, on the Wii. Twilight Princess is my partner’s favorite Zelda game, though!

Oh man! First ever playthrough is so exciting, this one is a childhood favourite of mine that I'm enjoying replaying. I hope you have a great time with it!

Yes you can. Mid-game without having to restart

Bonus, here's a great Reddit comment that helped me setup a texture pack. Really helps with how soupy those Wii/GC grass and rock textures look at high resolution: https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/1t8rtet/comment/okx8awj/

Extract: ZTP 4K 3.0b (4K).zip/ZTP4K 3.0b (4K)/User/Load/Textures/GZ2/ To(copy the path from here and put in the address bar):

  • Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/TwilitRealm/Dusk/texture_replacements/

I'll add bonus instructions on how to copy the file to bypass Google drives download limit. I had to create a new folder in Google Drive, click the kebab menu on the file, "Create a Shortcut" into that folder, and then go into my drive and download the folder. Seems to cheat Drive's download limit, and I imagine that'll be a problem for the next little while now that Dusk has released.

Thank you. Where to install the textures on my Steam Deck was exactly what I was looking for.

I will be downloading this and trying it later today!

I've been having issues with games on my Linux mint setup and if this doesn't work I may finally switch to a different flavor os

Bazzite has been fantastic for me, it could be for you too!

As a side note, I'm running Bazzite and this game works great

Nice! Thanks ☺️

It's unlikely that whatever issue you're having with your games is because of the desktop environment.

If your system is all-AMD, then it's amazing how well Linux just works. Turn it on, hardware accelerated everything.

If you've got NVidia anywhere near it, that's not so much the case. If Mint is being a bit dodgy, then I would have used to recommend trying it with Pop!, since that has pretty good driver support out of the box. Probably outdated advice, something like Bazzite might make more sense now, but I've not used it first hand. Partly because my system is all-AMD and just works, but also because I run Arch btw.

Bazzite has been my personal best experience with Linux, saying this with a Nvidia gpu, have had very few issues using for about a year now!

I just tried this on an iPhone 13 and it runs like a charm. No touch controls so only works with a controller or keyboard.

I saw this released and set it up. Hopefully this time I finally make it through Twilight Princess because I really want to learn to love it how everyone else does

It's a slow burn, and it undoubtedly sags in the middle - the massive empty spaces tip over from 'epic' into 'time wasting'. But it benefits hugely from telling a very personal drama with a lot of character development, and it has one of the darkest stories of any Zelda game. The Gamecube version has much sharper controls than the Wii version, so is the much better choice to reimplement. Hope you enjoy - I'm a big fan of this game, and set this up to play last night, it's really smooth.

Also, fun fact: the Wii version is completely mirrored. Like, completely flipped horizontally. Maps, characters, everything.

This is because they realized that most people are right-handed (unlike Link) and they hold the Wiimote with the right hand. So, instead of changing all the animations to make Link use the right hand, they decided the mirror the whole game.

And you can choose to mirror the game in Dusk if you're nostalgic for the backwards Wii version.

That IS a fun fact—I never knew that!

I get what you mean about Time Wasting, i saw a bit of it in my other attempts at playing. I think another thing stopping me is i'm not a fan of the art style. Something about it i don't really care for. I want to try it again with a PC port, maybe backup my saves too so i can't lose them just to be safe

Really excited for the randomizer mode, will try that out once it's ready

Will a Wii dump work with this? I find it difficult to decipher the exact requirements for making this work.

NTSC or PAL GameCube only rn

On the plus side, Link will be properly left handed in this.

But you can flip it if you're more familiar with the Wii version!

Dang. My private torrent tracker only had the Wii and Wii U versions. And I only have the Wii physical disc. Alright, thanks!

Sounds like an opportunity to find it yourself and then be the first to upload it, right when a whole bunch of other people are about to suddenly decide they need it too.

Wish I could, I don't have a DVD reader at all. I don't know anyone who has a PC with one in the last decade lol.

The private trackers in on all only had Wii or PAL GC… success is found at both Vimm and archive tho!

Teach me these Vimm and archive ways?

I can just download the .iso and it'll work with this project, I take it?

I’m not at my computer but I searched something like “dusk twilight princess gc dump” and found dumps in two different formats on the front page of DDG! One was at archive.org and one at Vimm’s Lair. They both booted up totally fine in Dusk!

❤️🫸🫷✨

Someone else also said “you can find the correct image on Minerva archive” and another said they found a site called cdromance that was surprisingly clean (no fake download ad links, etc) so I’m gonna look around those later to see if I can get one that matches the checksum, just to be safe!

Edit: cdromance is the same version as Archive, wrong hash. OR I’M CHECKING HASHES WRONG?! It says SHA1 so in running

Get-FileHash -Path “R:\Dusk\twiprin.rvz” -Algorithm SHA1

I wonder if that’s not correct? Cuz it’s not giving me any errors when I use it…

Are you running that command and getting the correct hash on any download? Test it with some other known, safe download as a control test. 😁 Ubuntu iso or something.

Or just generate a new hash with a short string, like "Hello, world!".

I get the correct hash on all my Linux ISOs, prolly like eight of them in my Medicat drive, so yeeeah D:

Not a bad plan tho. I had a weird external HDD and all tests came up correct and fine. I deduced the drive was the issue when my machines would come up with a different hash for the same exact file run twice in a row. A few months left on warranty, but it was replaced!

Phew!

Anyway, thanks for all the help! I was playing some Twilight Princess today and it was a good hit of nostalgia!

Although I had to turn down the resolution to just 2x, otherwise it was too crisp and the nostalgia didn't activate. 😅

O heck yeah, I’m glad you got it running! Were you able to get the correct hash from any of the places we talked about? If so, what command did ya use? I can test the hash on Windows, OSX, or any flavor of Linux.

I downloaded the rvz iso from Vimm's lair, but I couldn't get the hash to verify either. I don't know which file to check against. Neither the zip nor extracted content (rvz file) matched the hash checksums. The file name is also different in the download page, than the one you're getting on your disk. So I'm thinking maybe you need to recreate the iso and then chan against that?

Either way, it worked 🥲 Not sure how to verify, it what to verify, at this point.

Ooo I renamed mine, it was probably the same as yours hahaha. It was the full name with capitalization and stuff.

The hash is on the Dusk GitHub download page! There’s a US and EUR hash, but I haven’t had any of my downloads match it, at least with the command I used.. but they all boot fine!

The hash is on the Dusk GitHub download page!

Weird, those hashes are different from the ones on Vimm's lair. But none of them match the actual download lol...

Ahhh thank you, then I’m not crazy! Hahaha

Yeah very strange. And also the hashes on Vimm's lair can't even be copied correctly. The little box is too narrow for its content and the overflow is set to ellipsis, so it's truncated and you can't copy it unless you go into the HTML with the web tools. 😆 Not the best user experience.

I think Vimm gets a pass for existing since the ‘90s hahahaha

I can’t believe they’re still around. I downloaded stuff from Vimm’s for NESticle wayyyy back when!

Definitely 😄👍 It boots up and I'm good with that lol

Link sure does run like a super dork in this one.

Never liked his running animation.

That said, this is running pretty great on my Mac mini. I installed the 4K textures, too, and it's not hitting it too hard.

I really want to play this again but I don't think I'll emotionally survive Midna's lament again! The music in Twilight Princess was amazing! The Hyrule Castle theme slowly morphing into Ganondorf's theme still gives me shivers.

Downloaded before Nintendo strikes (yeah the project is legal, but also it's on GitHub)

GitHub sucks now, but I don’t think this project is gonna vanish—Ship of Harkinian hasn’t gone anywhere :3

None of these decomp/recomp projects have been shut down, as far as I know. Having absolutely no code from the games included seems to work!

For those like me who would prefer to have official higher-res textures as opposed to fan-made ones, the textures from the Wii U port can be obtained here.

I got this running very easily on my Linux laptop with 4k texture pack, and have been playing it with my new Steam Controller.

Never had a chance to play through this game, so this seems like the perfect time
