Chinese robot tries to dance like Michael Jackson
25d 20h ago by lemmy.zip/u/favoredponcho in funny@sh.itjust.works from i.imgur.comThat's still pretty impressive, especially the first recovery.
That was my thought. Like actually very close to making it through the recovery
And then went full Ashley Simpson.
(I'm pretty sure I've seen you write a rather fascinating tirade about how Ashley was the victim in all this, and I'm frankly trying to trigger you so that I can read it again.)
LEAVE ASHLEY ALONE!1! 🫠🙃🤪😭
So many people are talking and so focused on AI that everyone's been missing the robotics.
My husband has been showing me videos every week of robots from Japan, China, etc. Robotics has advanced insanely fast last few years.
Meh. Hard to feel excited about it. Humanoid robotics absolutely will not be beneficial for humanity in the current socioeconomic system. Best case is it spies on us and subverts democracy, worst case is it skullfucks people in impoverished nations to steal their land and resources.
Ultimately, no it won't be beneficial but late stage capitalism is going to fuck us one way or the other with or without robotics.
Its still coming and where its at now is undeniably impressive.
The most beneficial uses on a more micro level however which I agree with are jobs that are dangerous to humans. I mean we have used robots for space and deep sea exploration forever (super neat drive).
Warehouse jobs are also dangerous due to risks of acute and chronic injuries. Humanoid robots are 100% going to make it there. In an ideal world our future would be Star Trek but to your point it will be more like Alien universe.
Are humanoid robots really the best choice? Seems like robot forklifts (exist), robot pallet jacks (exist), and some kind of box grabber arm would be more efficient. I've always thought that humanoid robots were being worked on just for thr challenge and the fun/spectacle factor (and I guess investor hype in the case of Musk).
Humanoid robots are great at operating in existing environments that were built for humans. Like, your house or an office or our streets.
Purpose built robots are almost always better at specific tasks, but if you want to drop in a robot in an existing environment or have it interact with existing products and equipment, humanoid is the way to go.
Amazon for example has TONS of purpose built robots that are not humanoid, but their entire warehouse system was designed from the ground up for them.
Very true. I think more specific robots are better for specific tasks. Like you said I think its for the challenge now. We didnt need a dancing robot or one that can make free throws lol
I'm more worried about the global backslide into authoritarianism than capitalism.
Fair.
I'm more worried about the crater than the asteroid
That implies that only capitalism leads to a global backslide into authoritarianism which is historically very inaccurate. The rise of capitalism took power away from the crowns and the nobility like no other system ever has.
Sees an asteroid hurtling toward earth
don't worry about that, the real problem is craters, which is caused by unicorns
Asteroid getting closer
Fucking unicorns creating disinfo about the cause of craters. Asteroids are indifferent and couldn't be responsible for catastrophe, proving craters are caused by unicorns
Society becomes divided into two camps, an asteroid cult and people trying to stop the asteroid
the asteroid cult are a bunch of loons but the anti asteroid people are falling for unicorn propaganda, therefore are themselves morally equivalent to malicious unicorns
Asteroid hits earth, leaving a giant crater
Fucking anti asteroiders and their shitty craters.
Just don't look up at the asteroid and you won't have to have to acknowledge it
"Look at the asteroid" is what a tankie would say /s
Can’t annihilate the human race without Cylons.
Yeah, much more impressive than these choreographed performances.
Which makes the poor thing dying at the end very unsettling.
Yeah that's insanely impressive.
Sure it doesn't exactly know where its feet are, but... like how many people do you know that could do 5 or 10 seconds of that?
Also the leg flailing was extremely rapid and thus comical.
8/10.
Surprisingly well, yeah. And looks a lot more lightweight than I imagined.
Much better than musk's that couldn't even walk
You need to understand... regaining stability on a PERFECTLY FLAT AND PREDICTABLE surface is not new nor novel for robotics.
Oh gosh, you're absolutely right. That was in no way impressive at all, and I should never have brought it up. Can you ever forgive me?
Your sarcasm only proves how absolutely pathetic you and everyone else's understanding of robotics is.
Sounds like something a robot would say 🤔
Considering I'm shitting on the robots, that only further proves my point that ya'll are brainless morons merely voting down that which you do not understand. Sad.
Holy fuck guys we found him. It's the guy that's been going around shitting on people's robots
My dude, your username is literally "LurkingLuddite" and you're doing exactly what a luddite that is lurking would do. You might as well be a bot* at that point lol
Your inability to grasp reality is both pathetic and hilarious
ya'll are brainless morons merely voting down that which you understand.
Say again?
Given the complexity of the performance, and a clear miscalculation, which it was initially able to recover from, would say you're not giving it enough credit.
No. It only recovered when it stumbled back into a flat area. That OBVIOUSLY demonstrates that it's too stupid to deal with dynamic terrain.
Ok, you disrespect it now, but if you put a couple of M-249 saws on its arms, would you respect it then?
No
So that's a "no" on forgiveness?
On two legs? After stumbling? That was impressive few years back on four legs (the robodogs).
To be fair, Spot (which I assume is the kind of robodog you were talking about) is already a decade old
The guy missed the opportunity to moonwalk while dragging the robot out
The guy missed the opportunity to moonwalk while dragging the robot out
Witty comments like these belong to the few reasons I still log onto the Web from time to time.
The long pause where its just laying there with the lights still going and whatnot just sends me for some reason.
he ded
but did its shoe fall off?
Everybody's waiting, holding their breaths, whispering to each other...
Meanwhile, backstage, CHAOS!
"What we do?"
"Get him up! Get him UP!"
"I'm trying, there's no connection!"
"What does that mean?"
"He's dead."
"Dead, dead?"
"Dead, Dead, DEAD."
"Now what!"
"Somebody has to get him off stage."
"How?"
"How do you think? Drag him."
"Who?"
"Him!"
"NO! Who drags him off stage?"
"Well, this is your circus, I guess that means it's YOU."
"But it will be humiliating."
"Sure will. You want music?"
Ngl the first save was impressive.
Can't wait to laugh at a tripping killbot before it rights itself and wastes me with a patent pending 12 hour painful death injectable
It's pretty impressive anyway. I wonder what another year of development will do?
I also prefer dancing robot to RoboCop and the firemen's robot dogs.
they do have more successful dance shows too.
I dunno about Michael Jackson, but he's perfected the drunk uncle at a wedding.
Would that be druncle, or drunkle?
I like the first one.
If it was me falling over the steps in a dance performance, I'd stay down after the second time too.
Sometimes you just have to let gravity win
Gravity indeed.
Comedian Fred Berry, the guy who played Rerun from "What's Happening", came with headliner Pauly Shore at a stand-up show in my hometown back in like 2000. Famous for his high voice, high energy, and red beret - he accidentally walked right off the frontend of the stage mid-set. He was portly, so it wasn't graceful. He continues the rest of his set in the pit until he introduces Pauly on stage -- to which Pauly books it top speed and jumps in after him.
MC: Would you 2 fools get outta there!
Pauly: No. We like down here!
Rerun: We've accepted our fate. It's closer to hell down here.
Pauly: Trust me, I'd be easier if you just bring everyone into the pit.
At first I was like "Oh shit, it didn't completely eat shit on the stairs" and then it ended up completely eating shit the second time it got near the stairs. 🤣
You laugh now, but you'll remember these days fondly when the robot simply fell down instead of getting up and moonwalking while spraying bullets
The robot was once again defeated by its arch nemesis STAIRS
Around 12.000 people are killed by stairs each year in the US alone. And so many more injured. Stairs are a menace!
Cars say those are amateur numbers
One day they will attach guns to stairs, and where will we be???!!!!
The ESCALATOR is like a nuclear bomb in the robot world.

I have not played BL4, but I recently replayed 1-3. 2 is by far the best IMO, but man does leveling break midway through the game if you're doing side quests and/or DLC. You wind up super overpowered.
Robby are you ok, are you ok Robby!?
Great, so not only do we have to fight robots for access to water, they can now emote over our broken bodies
How long until Elon teaches his to teabag?
He needs to actually build a robot first, instead of a puppet controlled by an intern.
One of my favorite parts of vr fps like contractors is physically teabagging people. They are already being trained.
That was one of the first things it learned.
Why did they let it dance so close to the steps? Was it supposed to walk up?
Nah, the routine was not supposed to veer in that direction. Everyone lauding this as a win do not understand how simple these robots are.
This was supposed to be nothing but a vapid PR event that sold an image that is still not possible by consumer-grade robotics.
That's a simplistic and reductive look at what's happening here. The speed with which they're improving is insane. How long before they can build themselves? The speed of improvement would assume only a few years. You're mocking it for failing a dance done by one of the best dancers in human history. It's like saying that AI can't compete with usain Bolt, Tom Hanks, Nolan Ryan, Tom Brady, George Patton, Leonardo devinci, etc. yeah it can't beat the best of the best yet, but it's not that far off.
That dancing robot is better than most people, even taking the fail. Robots beat runners on a recent marathon.
It's being mocked for its inability to deal with stairs.
Daleks have been able to do that since the late 1980s.
Pretty sure since the 60's
Iirc, it's Remembrance of the Daleks (1988) where we see one hover up some stairs for the first time.
How long before they can build themselves?
Centuries.
We have had robots in factories since the 70's putting one tiny part each on a large assembly. Getting a humanoid robot to build itself is a gargantuan task. Tasking one of these to do any kind of intricate assembly right now would see it freak out and smash everything in the room.
Improving is insane for what you have seen.
Not for what is possible or what has been done already.
The Jackson Fives' father was ruthless on the kids practicing from early childhood.
I’m pretty sure the step was part of the original routine.
the comedic timing is simply impeccable
It did better than I woulda.
How amazing is that recovery after the first stumble?
Somewhere between more amazing than falling over and less amazing than being able to climb stairs.
I imagine it wasn't trained for these lighting conditions and a monotone grey floor. But funny nonetheless.
I think it’s because it’s a pre programmed routine and the only autonomous thing it does is self balance it’s not even looking at the environment. These Unitree robots are nothing more than advanced RC toys. If you look at other videos with these robots you often see someone with a remote controller in their hands behind their back. If you buy one and want it to move autonomously and take into account the environment with computer vision you have to program that into the robot yourself.
Funny, but somehow that's the most fair take that I think I've heard on this video and these robots.
Robo-bro died of embarrassment
I’m imagining most robots like this will be goose-stepping instead of dancing, so the inability to dance is probably not a big deal.
Apparently we stop the impending robot army by just putting up some steps at the border.
I think the dancing would probably be pretty bad for insurgency morale actually.
Oh no, STAAAAAAAAAAAIRS -- Claptrap
Poor thing was staired to death.
This is perfect drunk dancing strategy. If some stairs sneak up on you while you're getting in your groove, retreat to safe ground and recover dignity, before taking on the stairs directly for the final victory. Magnificent.
"You know, I was Dancing Robot Michael Jackson once."
"Yes, I saw. You were doing well until you flopped around and died."
I know i dont know shit about robotics but really the absolute first thing they need to do is have a robot that can stand up after falling down. It's how humans learn to walk and it's really a prequisite to walking in general. You just shouldn't walk if you can't get up, that's why babies crawl until they learn to stand up from the floor.
Almost assuredly it can, I think it broke or went into a failsafe or something.
Sure but it didn't so assuredly it can't. Once the video of it getting up after falling up stairs then it will be assuredly it can! So we wait for the evidence, and then we can be assuredly satisfied with your assertion:)
Have you ever seen any robot get up from the ground to standing??
Yea, all the time. It's like one of the first things engineers program.
Takeaway: if you're chased by a killer robot pull out a banana peel
To be fair, I don't remember MJ being anywhere near stairs, at least not with crazy dance steps.
That was still impressive, I can't do it better.
Ended up in the peter griffin fall pose.
Honestly, there was a short time where I thought the prat fall might have been an intentional bit… then it just lay there and eventually the guy shows up to drag it off stage lol.
It’s funny now, just wait till it’s Fortnite dancing while chasing you with a machine gun and a flaming sword.
You know Michel Jackson was good when even the Chinese can't make a knock-off of him.
I cannot wait for my boss to try to replace me with one of these.
/s
America doesn't stand a chance against China... In terms of break dancing robits
The comedic timing on the song is fantastic lol
where is the blanket of shame they used in a similar situation in Russia
Don't let it near the kids
Anthropomorphic robots belong to a trashcan
Dances like my cousin after drinking tequila
That's still better than me. Trust me.
That is pure gold! Also way better than I can do, lol.
The way its head tilts forward after the first stumble, it almost makes it look embarrassed. Very nearly made me feel bad for laughing as hard as I did.
That's going to be a very nice robot army. 🤣
They made a Frank Spencer robot.
I first didn't see when the guy comes to pick up the not. So they're really short... Hmm. Let's keep it that way.
Yeah i thought it was full sized until it was picked up, I then realised the bloke who made it is just a giant
I love that the guy who shame-drags the clanker out of there is giving hints of moonwalking himself.
I mean if he did this clip would be all over the place.
When I was young.... A 3,000kg humanoid robot trailed by 700m of cabling could take 3 steps before lighting itself on fire. And we were freaking out.
Tripping.
Nailed the ending.
"BIG FINISH!!"

Well it danced like him on propofol...
Breakdancing
Something about the way its shins clack with the music the first time is killing me
penal! ahahaha
I think the problem started after the first stumble, and he came out of it re-oriented in the wrong direction. That moonwalk should have been across the stage, instead of toward the audience, so when he came out of it, he was expecting to head back across the stage, but instead he headed toward the back of the stage, and hit the stairs, where he just pitifully gave up.
that's impressively, better than i could
I can't load the video, wondering if this is the xpeng iron? Last time I saw it, that seemed like the most impressive so far.
Leave it to the Chinese to make such technological achievement seem cheap.
I've yet to see these things to something useful.
