Mexico and US hotels sound alarm over weak World Cup bookings

This cup is going to be such a fucking disaster and I love it.
I have no interest but it'd be hilarious if we (Canada) and Mexico can turn a profit on the thing while the US is passed over like the fly-over nation it so wants to be
Oh PLEASE I would love to see that. It makes me sad that this regime has got me cheering for the country to fail quicker so the cult will wake up so we can actually have some change.
When we fail, they'll blame the left for not giving right wing shit "a try".
100%. Classic crybully behavior (aka fascist pussies)
If it ends up being bad enough to kill FIFA, I'll throw a fucking party about it.
if scalpers are desperate to offload thier excessive amount of tickets for lower price, its a GOOD sign.
This is the bigger problem. FIFA still got their money because scalpers bought the tickets. They don’t care about hotels or scalpers as their bottom line still got padded.
But is it first order scalpers or secondary? It would be just as hilarious to see Ticketmaster or whatever company stuck with the bill.
Honestly, same.
Could have been a great event, especially here in KC where we've had events with a million-plus people go off with less than ten arrests multiple times in recent memory.
But the billionaires, the fascists, and the bureaucrats have ruined it like they do with every fucking thing. I hope it fails spectacularly.
Dude I hate football because it's corrupt and most players just act like children, but It's the first time our national team (Jordan) reaches it and with a promising lineup too :(
Dont let the corrupt professional football stop you from enjoying an extremely fun and cheap sport!
Yup.
Zero interest in sports but looking forward to YouTube autopsies of this clusterfuck of a trainwreck.
I'm not sure what's funnier, the whining of these self-entitled business associations, the corruption exacted by FIFA, or the fact that they spent so much time fighting over who gets to shake down football fans that the fans just got up and left.
And football fans love to be shakem down, dangle some new shirts or an "official ball" in front and they bite. Real accomplishment by fifa
The fans left encouraged by ICE arresting and deporting anyone they can find.
And $15k visa bonds to enter the country didn't help with traveling arrangements.
Yep, it has all been well managed. May be Demented Don is happy with his Peace Prize though a project management prize for this schemozzle is unlikely.
From his perspective, this is a win. A successful world cup would force Americans, at least temporarily, to think about the world as more than just them.
This keeps them isolated and ignorant.
The frog in the well... Votes for oligarchs.
They basically just put US sports prices on football. Turns out non Americans are not willing to pay the price of a season ticket for a Champions League team to watch some smaller football nations play against each other.
Yeah, they'd rather go to an oppressive country that used slave labor to build the stadium. Viture signaling at it's best.
Yeah, they'd rather go to an oppressive country that used slave labor to build the stadium. Viture signaling at it's best.
They are avoiding the US, try to keep up.
Cry me a river. Fuck FIFA. And I don't really feel sorry for any officials/businesspeople who thought it's a good idea to endorse this.

That violin is much too big.

Such a shame the creator of that hilarious picture doesn't know where the bow goes playing violin
Tardigrade doing their best!
False. The tardigrade is clearly practicing their sub ponticello technique. A sound I think clearly would fit here.

Well, people presumably don't want to be arbitrarily arrested and dragged off to a concentration camp ... or they just can't stand fascists. Both are good reasons to boycott this criminal state. It's about time, anyway, since FIFA is a plague too.
Fuck the world cup. Literally nobody i know cares about it.
Even if you don't care about it, I've seen like no ads for it. Usually they are playing by now and plastered everywhere. Only thing I've seen is shitty looking merch at gas stations and Walgreens.
The lack of promotion is weird now that you've point it out
It is not. They sold the tickets, mostly to first level skalpers, so they are good and don't need any more advertising.
Yeah I've only seen the shitty merch at airports and nothing else, and I live near a host city.
Well anything beyond ticket sales is still game.
They probably have sold all tickets to first-level skalpers (and maybe to a handful of real fans) long ago, so why waste money on advertizing?
Wouldn't it be fucking brilliant if scalpers were left holding the bag as it were - thousands of unsold tickets!
Given the low hotel booking numbers, this might actually happen.
Huh, now that you mention it, I don't see much promotional merch in Japan either. They usually have stuff to support the national team for these kind of events. But I guess they wouldn't even be able to print packages in Samurai Blue since even our potato chips packaging will soon be black and white.
When is it happening? Next year?
This summer, I believe. Starting early June.
You are correct, it's starting June 11th. That's why I think it's so weird there has been like zero ads I've seen so close to the tournament.
"The Continental Soccer Association is coming to America! It's all here - fast-kicking, low scoring, and ties? You bet!"
"You'll see all your favorite soccer stars. Like Adiaga! Adiaga two! Badiaga! Aruglia! And Pizzoza!"
"This match will determine once and for all which nation is the greatest on earth - Mexico or Portugal!"

Oh I love the world cup and am very excited about it... in general.
Specifically I hate that this corrupt fucking government is going to be participating in it at all.
To be fair, FIFA is almost as corrupt as Trump
Which is really saying something.
FIFA is like, world class level corruption. Sepp Blatter is the GOAT and Trump is getting close.
Watch it on pirated broadcasts.
This is a moral obligation.
I use to love it.... Pretty much right up until Germany, but since then?
Russia? Qatar? Amerikkka??
Nah, I'm fucking done with FIFA, and their world peace prize
hey don't you DARE insult the FIFA World Peace Prize
Plus with Ebola it just seems extremely not worth it right now.
Don't forget, the US also has measels and typhus.
I'd be more afraid of ICE concentration camps. But if an Ebola infected person would attend this event, it would get interesting fast.
Ebola is not that contagious. It's not like airborne COVID it or other similar viruses.
Yes, it is spreads by contacts and liquids. Now imagine someone infected standing behind you in a stadion and shouting and screaming for their team. That little spittle hitting your neck can suffice to transfer Ebola...
When they were still debating it I sent a letter to my MLA saying it is ridiculous.
WTF!!! World Cup is The most important event in the World. No other sport event can get close. And yes, USA (backed by FIFA) fucked World cup by introducing Half-Time Show. Nonsense.
And it's the most embarassing world cup ever because it's in this shithole country with a child raping president overseeing it. If there's one wc to boycott in your life it's this one.
Ow no, anyway.
No one can fucking afford to buy anything.
These companies that Mostly/only provide extraneous and unessential goods and services are about to start finding out.
I'm willing to allow for them to receive FIFA peace prizes as recompense.
I actually live near one of the sites. Even a year ago or whenever the tickets and matchups were announced, it seemed all the tickets were unobtainium. Saw insane prices for random matchups.
I would've liked to participate in the spectacle but I didn't want to spend thousands for me and a friend to go see Eritrea v. New Guinea or some such other prelim matchup I had no interest in.
So then I got to thinking, how many people (genuine fans) from some of these countries are actually able to travel to North America paying peak travel and accommodation costs in addition to the match ticket cost? It must be the 1% of the 1% of many fanbases.
In 2022, in Qatars application, they did so with a maximum ticket price of $1500. Which quickly became a $5000 ticket after they had secured the event.
And that was already at the time the most expensive tickets to a world cup game, ever.
Though i cannot say i have much hope for the insainely corrupt organisation that is FIFA. Not to mention how much they stink of shit from all the ass licking of Trump.
So then I got to thinking, how many people (genuine fans) from some of these countries are actually able to travel to North America paying peak travel and accommodation costs in addition to the match ticket cost? It must be the 1% of the 1% of many fanbases.
And then factor in how many would even risk it under the current US government. We've all read the stories of random travellers being arrested and spending a fortnight in terrible arrest conditions before being able to fly home.
It must be the 1% of the 1% of many fanbases.
Whenever Ireland are in a world cup, people start saving from the qualifiers so the rich are definitely there but it's die hard footie fans that make up the bulk traveling.
It's hard to overestimate just how much some people love the beautiful game. I remember the 2002 world cup which was in Korea / Japan and myself and my mates were getting up at unholy hours to watch all while murdering beers and screaming at the TV and I'm not even that into football.
womp womp
aw shucks, too bad.
How is this Possible? They gave Trump the PEACE PRIZE!
*"Piece of shit prize"
"We weren't able to gouge the rubes. We may have to charge reasonable rates and still make a bit of profit. Dammit!"
I really wish people would see past the nanometer thick veneer of shiny that FIFA and every big team puts on, hiding their extreme corruption and bad habit coverups.
Football (suck it, USA) has so much money being thrown at it from all sides that it's no wonder it has some of the worst institutions running the show. Yet a LOT of people will still go out of their way to "support" the team, despite being too fucking poor for said team's own tastes.
Football (suck it, USA)
Not gonna include Australia or Canada or Japan in sucking it?
Ireland has Gaelic football too so you have to figure out from context which football is being referred to.
We even play against the Aussies at a mix of the two football types occasionally which is called international rules.
Their lads are fucking massive as they play it professionally while Gaelic football is strictly amateur (all the money gets pumped back into local clubs which generally end up being very nice as a result).
That sounds awesome. More countries should mash up their sports and compete against each other. I'm thinking cricket + Turkish oil wrestling.
Turkish Oil wrestling + any sport ...except pole vault.
Does Japan use the term Soccer?
Well they don't have the English r sound but they say sakkaa.
Coulda been fubooru, but alas, it was not meant to be.
Canada too! Hotels are whining in Canada, after having jacked prices up to like $1000/night for the event.
It's surprising, having the event done in 16 different incredibly geo-distant locations, with jacked up hotel prices, doesn't seem to be a draw in a market where soccer is a lukewarm sport (it's a bit bigger in Mexico, I think, but Canada and the US not so much). Shit, with the recent immigration surge from India, you'd prolly get more buzz goin by hosting cricket.
$75 event parking...why aren't people coming? Are they stupid?
16 locations? I was gonna ask how both canada and mexico could be hotel options. Thats nuts. I mean I remember it being done in a single city in the past. Is it that much bigger than before?
It isn't big in North America -- but yea, 16 different cities, from coast to coast, and from Canada down to central Mexico.
The total number of matches has increased -- Qatar had like 64 matches, this time its around 100. Each venue seems to be hosting like 5-9 games. So it's basically gone from 64 matches in a concentrated area, to... this clown show.
I don't watch soccer but I thought it was going from 32 to 64, not 64 to 100! That's absurd!
you know what I guess I was just ignorant of how it was coast to coast before. My city had one of the venues and I thought the whole world cup took place in the area. (just looked it up). so I guess having the matches all over the place is not that unusual.
I can't figure out who actually thought any of this was a good idea other than marketing people and idiots who never planned to attend any of it. It's phenomenally punitive to fans.
Short of having a private jet, who is going to more than 2 or 3 games? Who is honestly expected to just scamper around a region of a whole continent, then criss-cross a whole continent, to support their country other than people paid to by their country's Ministry of Sport or something similar to attend every game? People who follow sports teams around the US during a season of anything are an infinitely tiny group.
Like a team outside of your small Group stage? Fuck you, the games are 4000km apart. Instead of enjoying games for the game itself, you can only be a nationalist.
If the winner of Group H gets to the final (lol) they will have gone from playing a territory spanning Atlanta to Jalisco, then literally bouncing back and forth between the West Coast and Texas until heading to NJ. They might have flown enough miles to circle the globe by the time they're done.
What city will see even a notably economic benefit from what amounts to 6 weeks of highly compressed MLS setup? The only thing that's concentrated here is taking expensive flights. Everything else is diluted to the point of being worthless.
This whole Cup should be considered a human rights abuse, by all accounts.
That's another reason. Hosting a world cup in an European country where you can easily reach all game locations within a few hours by train or car is different than one where you have to fly a few hours to get to the next game.
The scale is off by orders of magnitude is the thing. Germany is the size of Wisconsin. Texas is slightly larger than France. Can Germany or France host the whole-ass World Cup by themselves? Sure can. Easily. Can Texas? Hell no. Even if just California hosted, that would make sense (with high-speed rail).
Yes that's what they want, rich people from around the globe flying in to Miami and all the working class people can fuck off. Im just following what they designed.
That's what they expect, and then forget that there's not 40,000 rich people willing to sit in the cheap seats in a stadium in Kansas City.
This one, and the last two as well...
Good, i will not attend it even harder.
Can't get blood from a stone.
The field gets installed on the white house lawn after the cage match is taken down
Personally, I boycott...
Same.... 2nd one in a row.
When I was younger, the world Cup marked milestones in my life, I loved the atmosphere and excitement it brought every four years....
But as I grew older and wiser, I'm fucking done with that clownshow. Germany was great, but fuck eEverything since then (Russia, Qatar, and now canmexusa)
I could give two shits about the sport most of the time but the big tournaments are always tons of fun to go watch at a bar or at someone’s house. I’d never pay to go to one in person but I’m only just keeping up with news of this years because
A) it will affect my ability to quickly move around my city/state B) schadenfreude C) I need to avoid the song Jellyroll wrote for it at all cost.
Yes, in addition to the abominable things that Qatar has done.
The grift is fucking awful beyond belief.
Surely all the hotel owners are fine with this because the reason they are rich hotel owners in the first place is that they TaKe RiSkS with their capital, right?
Right?
Great!!
Handing this event to Mexico, USA and Canada was a stupid idea in the first order.
When the World Cup is done in a European country, you can travel from location to location by train in a few hours, less than half a day. You can book your hotel somewhere independent of the game location, and move to all the games from there and be back for the night.
In the current event, you basically have to book a hotel in the games' location, have to fly there, and usually rent a car there.
My heart bleeds purple peanut butter…
"oh my god no... Oh no. No." 🙂😎
I don't care about football...
ah, the NY and NJ AG's are subpoenaing FIFA over ticket prices for the NY game/s. -thumbs up-
Can we stop with the usage of the word "aLaRm" on news headlines if people are not actually going to do anything?
“Alarm” doesn’t mean the person has to do anything. You can be alarmed without doing something about it
Oh, damn... so have yall seen some of the crazy shit people have been doing with home automation these days? Setting up a whole ass brewery with such precision on temperature, pressure, and specific gravity in their own house.
Wrong thread? 🤔
Just a poorly made and poorly received joke about aggressively not caring about the problems fifa/the world cup are facing. Sure, you miss 100% of the shots you don't take, but we're not always playing hockey, ya know?
