Ormiston College has begun clearing over 650 trees in a designated koala habitat and koala priority area. The Qld Conservation Council has become involved and is asking people to write to Federal Environment Minister Murray Watt who has the power under the EPBC Act to call in this project for assessment. Letter is pre-written. Please send and and share with anyone who is interested in this, particularly if they live in Qld.
The College wants to build new playing fields, a pool, and boarding houses - plans that had been rejected by Redlands City Council but were bypassed and approved by the state government.
Locals like Ormiston Koala Group have protested furiously, and clearing work was paused when a koala was spotted in a tree designated for removal. Unfortunately forest clearing has since resumed and is planned to intensify during the upcoming school holidays.
Support Ormiston Koala Group and other campaigners by taking 2 minutes to send Minister Watt a message using our online form, and asking him to urgently investigate potential breaches of the Act.
Koalas have been listed as endangered in Queensland since 2022, and further clearing in this wildlife corridor and noted koala habitat will put more pressure on a species already being pushed towards extinction.
