The European Social Stack — An open declaration
12d 6h ago by feddit.org/u/Vittelius in fediverse from european.socialSocial media’s impact on society and citizens clearly shows the need for change. Europe has a strong ecosystem of social companies and a deep well of expertise in designing and operating social protocols. We are building on this to move away from large monopolistic platforms with their authoritarian governance and editorial positions, and are joining forces to establish a diverse and resilient information infrastructure in Europe. Together, we will protect people and institutions from interference by these platforms. What’s more, we will bring thousands of jobs and billions of euros that social media generates to our continent, to circulate that revenue in our own thriving business ecosystem.
From this perspective, open European platforms and protocols such as the Fediverse (Mastodon, PeerTube, or Mobilizon), the Atmosphere (Eurosky, Flashes, Tangled, or Web Tiles) and Private Messaging systems (like Matrix or XMPP) are complementary solutions for Europe, with shared common goals.
Hold on. That page is someone wishing all this were true or it's actually happening?
Scroll to the bottom of the page. There you'll see who is responsible for this manifesto.
The group of organisations or people who have signed includes Mastodon and Felix Ableitner, representing Lemmy.
Yes that's me ;)
They contacted us just a few days ago, asking if we want to sign. So I also don't know any more details yet, only what the public declaration says.
I saw that. But while the text suggests the initiative is connected to EU, I don't see something making it certain
I've heard of a few politicians making noise in this direction. Though they seemed unaware of the fediverse, and had no actual plan. This appears to be someone's imagination of how it could work.
EU regimes can be even worse though:
You really should not derail this discussion here.
Sounds cute, but it has to be implemented without the current trend of Eurofaszionazism.
Whether you make a platform out of Mastodon, AP, Peertube, XMPP, whatever, they are no longer useful if you slap espionage, ChatControl, forced Israeli apologia or anysuch stupidity on them.
