Love it when "Big Red" does his fishing dance :-) Reddish Egret Thursday morning in the tidal channel at North Beach, Fort DeSoto.
Hey, a place I've been! Went back in November. Didn't see Big Red, but I did get a ton of awesome shells, including some sand dollars!
including some sand dollars!
I'm not at beaches very often, but I typically like looking for molluscs & crustaceans. On the Jersey beaches I could catch pretty easily little coquina clams and mole crabs. I'd put them in a big empty clam shell with some sand, covered with water, placed in the shade, and watch their activities. It was very cute seeing them bury themselves, and the clams even stuck up their intake tubes to feed!
A bit later of course I'd return them, but it was fun having a temporary zoo on the shore.
That's a neat idea to put them in a big clam to watch them. I'll be there later this month, so I may have to give it a try. I normally watch them quickly bury themselves after the waves wash away their cover. They dig so quickly!
At Honeymoon Island I found a really cool lightning welk looking guy, but I saw a guy living inside so I put him back.
We also went to a beach in Delaware to see the horseshoe crabs, and we found this tiny little hermit crab the size of those tiny clams. That guy was so cute. The horseshoe crabs were quite the sight also.
I’ll be there later this month
You can use a bucket or actually a second giant clam to scoop both sp. out. Just make sure they have enough sand to bury themselves in, topped to the brim with seawater.
Ah, horseshoe crabs... living fossils... I'm jealous.
I just got freaked out a bit!
Google photos just popped up this was 7 years ago today!

Nice.
