US judge asked to bar Trump's UFC fight at White House

A federal judge in Washington has been asked to block President Donald Trump’s plan to host an Ultimate Fighting Championship mixed martial arts bout at the White House next week and to ‌halt construction of the metal arena structure called "the Claw" on the South Lawn of the iconic executive residence.

Two Washington-area residents in a court filing on Sunday, opens new tab asked U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta to issue a temporary restraining order halting the event, scheduled to coincide with Trump’s 80th birthday on June 14.

The lawsuit contends the event violates rules barring sporting events on the South Lawn and at the Lincoln Memorial, and that construction of the large arena structure requires congressional authorization.

Trump is facing other lawsuits over construction projects on the White House and elsewhere in the capital, including his plan to build a 90,000-square-foot ballroom on the site of the demolished East Wing, and his proposal to renovate and close The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

Is there a reason why they filed this so last minute? I'm not sure I understand the thought process, this has been under construction for a few weeks now.

It’s possible that they wanted the temporary restraining order to be issued without enough time for it to be then overturned with enough time for the event to proceed.

In other words, the timing could be a tactical decision to ruin the event

They must watch the judges then, because it could go the other way too. If this judge says they can go ahead with it, then you can't appeal either.

This is the real event to bet on

This one is interesting as well. It was up to 8 percent in March. Was that when everyone thought he was ded?

This is so creepy

Not you, Polymarket freaks me out

I agree. It's a fucked up thing.

Just as a guess, maybe because they needed to start building before it would stick?

Some other lawsuits to prevent obviously illegal things have been thrown out because they hadn't actually done the illegal things yet. Recently one of the lawsuits against the EO to have the post office selectively deliver ballots got thrown out for that (by a Republican judge).

Asked for a bar.... At the UFC match.
