'Gay walking speed' may have unexpected health benefits, experts say

8d 15h ago by lemmy.world/u/return2ozma in upliftingnews from www.thepinknews.com

It's gay to walk quickly. It's gay to take your own bags to the shops. It's gay to have empathy.

Holy shit there are a lot of people out there who are very insecure with themselves.

things people have took me I'm gay for:

reading
cooking
cleaning
being decently dressed (not even well-dressed)
having skin care products
using conditioner on my hair
driving a sedan/compact car
playing nintendo or jrpg games
enjoying classic music/opera/theater/ art & foreign films owning a cat
drinking cocktails/lattes/milkshakes
riding/racing bicycles
not playing team ballsports

the definition of straight man is very very narrow for some folks, basically drive a giant truck, be unable to take care of yourself, and be into sports and action pop cuture, rock and roll/rap, and only ever do 'basic' things.

if you do anything outside of the box, you're gay. because 'normal straight men' don't do those things, and if they do, they only do it to impress women or something. like I can go to the opera with my girlfriend and hate it, but if i go myself and enjoy it I'm gay.

I'm an old man who looks like a Sheppard, I love when other old guys think I'm one of them and say stupid shit.

"Girl, please" as a response kinda breaks them.

Funnily enough, people who have such narrow definition of manliness usually refuse to acknowledge gender identity as a concept. It honestly baffles me sometimes.

I mean it works since that keeps them from hurting you while you're banging their wife.

According to this I'm Gay... can't wait to tell my wife.

she knows.

You sound like my brother 😂

I can see how right-wing idiots might call empathy gay, but bags or walking quickly? I really don't get that.

Your own bags = reusable = eco-sustainability = weak.

I hae neer heard associating reusing bags to gay, but I can see how it may work "logically".

plenty of left-wing people think it's also gay.

being a homophobe isn't exclusive to the right-wing.

Fuck it isn't even exclusive to heterosexuals, I've met some gay men who can't stand "butch" lesbians and lots of queer people who hate bisexuality.

nope. some of the most heinous shit i've seen comes from queer folks. some of them have supremacy complexes about their flavor or gay or queer or whatever being the only 'real' one.

I guess that's fair, but thinking that empathy is weakness (or something bad in general) is a predominantly right-wing idea. In fact, that's one of the main problems. The right has a severe lack of empathy.

right, tell that to all the progressives in my state who are 'the left' who basically think if you weren't born rich you should fuck off and die. SUCH EMPATHY they have.

but sure, they pretend to love the gays and trans and they love their pride flags on their porches... as long as they don't have to see any non-white gays or trans people...

just like they love BLM, but they systematically freak out and oppose any development of public or low income housing....

The people you describe are not progressives...

oh weird, you should let them know that. they seem to be convinced they are very progressive.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Get_Out(2017, the name of a film related to this!)

lol what? I’ve never heard this stereotype.

Nor have I, but I guess this definitely rules out being gay based on my walking speed lol.

Apparently I'm fascistly gay.

Goosestepping at a brisk pace?

If we're going by stereotypes, the straights should be striding purposefully, laser focused on getting to the building site or gun range.

The gays should be sauntering slowly in painfully tight Italian loafers.

Tip: Swinging your hips reduces movement speed by 10%, but provides a plus 1 bonus to CHA

You complete bitch!

[i kid]

That doesn't sound pleasant for the feet.

I first heard it maybe 10 years ago, and it's become a lot more prevalent, once you start to notice it (obviously not all gay guys but a lot do) then you kind of take up the joke too. I've always been told I walk too fast, now I know why.

It's been a stereotype for a while. There are a few articles/memes out there about it, at least since the late 2010's:

https://www.gq.com/story/move-im-gay

https://www.lgbtqnation.com/2019/06/stereotype-lgbtq-walk-faster-straights-unexpected-benefit/

I must be the gayest mf alive, TIL

Pythagoras claim that walking in a straight line is the fastest way has been debunked. Walking in a gay line is faster.

Walking in a gay conga line reaches warp speed and emits sparkles.

underrated comment

fellas, is it gay to walk quickly?

I hope not. I usually walk quickly, with purpose. I hate these types that can best be described as "waddling". Just like a sloth cosplaying as a duck. And somehow they manage to just stand in doorways, and block isles. Meanwhile I'm in my head thinking "HEY FUCKFACE!!! MOVE YOUR FUCKING ASS!!!"

And then I wonder if I might have anger management issues. Then I realized I haven't punched anyone in a really long time, so that's close enough to managed anger. So that means these wastes of space really are that annoying to walk behind. Shopping doesn't have to take 2 hours. You can be in and out in like 10 minutes. You just gotta know what you're buying, and where it is. But then these types just.....exist.

So I just want everyone to know, that if you could lose a race to a snail, I want you to know that everyone hates you. If you're going to walk this slow, just get a mobility scooter. Maybe you'll be faster on wheels. Which means out of my way faster. And really, that's the ultimate goal here, right? Getting everyone out of my way. I think that's a goal everyone should work towards. That, and finding someone willing to bring me cheese regularly.

I really like cheese.

But also, I'm not gay. I had no idea speed was gay? Then again, I don't notice these things. I'm always the last to know if someone is gay. I didn't realize Richard Simmons was gay until 1995. I got made fun of for not knowing. And that's how I found out.

I hope not.

Bad take.

imho you are describing managed anger, next step is to zen away to anger in the first place - it does sound slightly above average, all caps is just bad news bro. anyhoo - you can do it!

The first step is to want to get rid of the anger though, right? How does one in this state move past the idea that they are right, and therefore it's right to be angry?

You can be right and not angry.

For me, a big epiphany came through examining my intent while angry and whether the anger was helping or hindering that intent.

There are some cases where it can help, though might still not be the best tactic. It makes you more willing to use more force when doing something physical; but you are capable of that force with more control when not angry. And it can have social effects: intimidation, empathy, increased resistance, and trolling.

Empathy is really the only beneficial one, though it often involves patronization because it reduces you to a child throwing a tantrum, so it's a bit of a pathetic one.

Intimidation doesn't convince people, though they may appease you in the moment or even long term, but each time you do that, you're "cashing in" some of the relationship and possibly putting a target on your back if those you intimidate see any way of eliminating you as a threat.

And obviously increased resistance or trolling are the opposite of what you want to accomplish.

Once you've convinced yourself that anger doesn't help regardless of whether you're right or right to be angry, then it's a matter of reminding yourself about this when you feel anger flaring up instead of trying to justify it. Don't punish yourself about it, it's ok to feel anger even if unhelpful and getting more upset that you got upset is even more counterproductive.

It's not easy. You will probably even fail to control your anger sometimes and let your emotional side dictate that this time it's different or you just don't care this time. Nothing you can really do other than reflect honestly on it later, once the anger has passed.

You can also pause to examine your feelings in the moment of anger. What are you feeling right then? Why? Where do you want things to go from there? How could you get there? Is it really that important? Could you be the wrong one? Could it be a big miscommunication and you're actually arguing about two different things? Why is it so upsetting that someone feels differently from you? Why do you feel like it's your job to correct this?

Though one form of anger we should hold on to is indignant rage at living in a system designed to fuck us from multiple angles all at once.

I had a friend back in the day who loved Rupaul, they got so mad when we tried explaining drag to them, refused to believe us. But one day they just stopped talking about how sexy Rupaul was. Some folks just don't have "gaydar" as long as noone gets hurt it's all ok.

Is it gay to have long legs?

Unidentified submersible bearing 323, moving at gay walking speed. -Das Boot maybe

Set course bearing 323, full gay ahead!

Suction on After Trim, gay venting.

More like Dis Booty lmao

ALAAAAAAAAAAAARMMMMMM!!!

Fast and bi-curious?

Bike-curious?

Had a bike shop here called bikurious. Great name, they used to get all my business.

Move, I’m gay.

Nice to meet you gay, I'm moved

I'm getting there at the speed of gay!

It’s a long held belief or stereotype that gay men walk faster than straight men

It is? Is this some commonly known stereotype that I just missed hearing about?

Guurl, we have got places to be! Hello?!

Source: some middle school kid

TIL I might be gay, couldn't possibly be adhd or anxiety. Kind of a weird way to find out but alright

Yeah I think this is an AI hallucination. I've heard or seen this. And I've been a very fast walker, I blame mine on ADHD or autism.

I've never heard about this either. It's probably much more regional or something?

I guess “city walking” makes me gay? Is this what they mean by “metrosexual”? Idfk anymore lol

These people have never been to a non-car-centric city. My city hasn't even fully recovered from it's car-centric hell past and almost everyone who lives and works here walks or bikes.

do you look fabulous while you're doing it?

TIL I'm gay. Great, now I've got to tell my wife I suppose.

First you must answer: at what temperature do you drink your coffee?

I have no clue tbh, as long as it's warm.

Aw, see that’s the thing. Gay people drink their coffee iced.

I am intermittently gay.

Everyone's gay this month. It's okay.

However, if you are in a committed relationship right now, that takes precedence over your gayness and theirs too

Amen to that. My wife and I are both mostly gay, but we're straight for each other.

I'm gay all summer, baby.

The fuck does walking speed have to do with orientation? Do men get less gay as they get older and slow down?

Dunno, but it's a common trope among gay men to walk at light speed. I'm incredibly guilty of this. The "move, bitch, I'm gay" struggle is real.

Unexpected?

I appreciate all the funny comments about the gay tie-in, but the "unexpected health benefits" of WALKING is the dumbest attempt at clickbaitizing a headline that I've seen in a while.

Republicans on their way to make gaywalking a crime.

I never heard of this as "gay." Though my girlfriend and I (female) both walk pretty damn fast, so maybe there's something to it.

I wondered whether me walking fast and being ND are related. Not saying all lesbians are autistic but…

Oh good point, we're both that too. Unusual walking gaits aren't uncommon for people on the spectrum.

It's a long held stereotype that gay men walk faster than straight men

Is it though? This is the first I've heard of it

I've heard it before. We now have a n=2 of data!

Why Do Gay Men Walk So Fast?

https://www.gq.com/story/move-im-gay

The faster walking speed is so that I can be a bottom sooner and for a longer time.

Brisk walking places greater demand on the heart, lungs, and muscles than slower walking.

The article ignores causality to make our walking speed this quirky thing. In reality our heart beats faster because of historical trauma and hypervigilance, which the body automatically converts into increased walking speed. It might be adaptive but it's not fun constantly looking over your shoulder to watch for danger.

Not everyone walking fast is experiencing trauma flashbacks. Sometimes I'm just impatient and want to get where I'm going.

USians really can't stop thinking about (homo) sexuality, episode n+1

It’s unexpected that exercising with higher cardiovascular output is associated with health benefits?

That's not true, I've always been told I walk too fast and I'm straight, Ish.

Buddy, I got news for ya

If you're over 6' , it could be your stride. If not, or if you hear this from other skyscrapers...

sis, maybe your ish is more swish than you wish🫂

I guess I'm gay when I'm angry?

"Make me angry. You would like me very much when I'm angry!" -pink hulk

But only when angry. Would that make you straight or ace when you're not angry?

If u walk fast u gay

the best tl;dr ever

Aww thanks

English or Spanish, walking speed?

Can confirm, am bisexual. Regularly stuck behind slow walkers but not fast enough to overtake fast walkers.

Got to commit to being gay instead so you can have the extra speed for the overtakes.

Go Go! Gay Gay! >>>>>>>>BOOST!>>>>>>>>

I don’t know if gay guys walk faster but i have noticed when me and my friends walk together we walk way faster than when i’m alone. Does that mean we’re all gay?/s

Underlying homoerotic tension

“Underlying”

Overt homoerotic tension is reserved for world-class sprinters I believe

Nah just means you want to kiss your friends.

I bet this has more to do with more gay and trans people more often being neurodivergent than anything else.

You got a source on that by chance? I'm just going by my own anecdotal stuff but I feel like neurodivergence is pretty rampant in straight people too. I guess queers do seem more open to acknowledging neurodivergence and a lot of straights/cissies strive for "normality" or at least the appearance of it.

I know it's anecdotal but I have noticed that LGBTQ people tend to be more accepting of the nerodivergent and that lots of nerodivergent people identify as queer.

I'm thinking we should make a new national group where all of the marginalized people can come together and help each other, not to take away from anyone's identity or drown their needs in a sea of "but what about isms" just one big umbrella with the common goal of equality, I do know who human rights watch is. But I'm thinking just a group that plans parades and volunteers at soup kitchens, just feel good stuff where everyone is welcome. We only need to letters US, and that name isn't chosen because I think it's funny when dickheads scream about "tha gays stole the damn rainbow"

Legend has it, that if you exceed Warp Factor Lilac, you'll circle back to walking at Gay Speed. It's somewhere after the Lizard Stage and before Spaghettification.

Is it really unexpected that getting more exercise makes you healthier

Maybe I am a gay

If there are correlations between queerness and neurodivergence, walking faster could be explained by ADHD

There’s a huge overlap between neurodivergence and being LGBTQ but not all neurodivergence is ADHD
