Mazzeru, by Jules Stromboni

Very beautiful novel graphic novel by Jules Stromboni. The story is set in a village in southern Corsica in the 19th century.

His engraving technique is quite unique:

I draw on sheets of acetate that have been engraved with a nail. I sketch out my story and my layout in pencil on the back. Then I literally attack the plastic sheet with the nail. I draw blind. Next, I apply ink to the plate with a cloth, and finally, the drawing emerges—sometimes with little accidents that I work with.

Here's a video of his technique.

Fascinating. I'd not known about Stromboni before, nor his unique method.

Reminds me a bit of how Charles Rodrigues worked. He was an untrained artist who would sketch on a sheet of acetate sitting on a light-box table, then place a fresh sheet of acetate on top, and refine the drawing a bit. In this way, after maybe ~7sheets of drawings, he'd be okay with the result, finding a way to overcome the fact that he could barely draw(!) [samples]

Anyway, I found a digital version of Mazzeru, and will check it out soon. Thanks much for the contribution!

I'll check Charles Rodrigues' work ! Thanks !
