My grandfather was from Volhynia and was an ethnic Pole, likely of Armenian heritage. He lived through the genocide but his parents were killed by NKVD just after WWII. Despite my parents being nationalists who tried to feed him „truth” about Volhynia he remained of opinion that it was just a final step in escalation to which both Poles and Ukrainians contributed by previous violence. One day Poles will have to reconcile with the fact that we had our own UPAs that other countries hold similar grudges for, and that it’s impossible to dictate what national identity is for them.
