Heavy Metal: A magazine in transition - The Comics Journal

Heavy Metal magazine is dead. Today's Heavy Metal magazine is a nostalgia scam being run by professionals. And I hate that, I miss the real Heavy Metal magazine. So many good issues and memories.

Heavy Metal Magazine as cultural unit mostly ran its course as soon as Metal Hurlant went down and National Lampoon started competing with Playboy. So basically 1981-82 been downhill and by 1986-87 it getting really sad. Around that time Marvel did a good job with Epic Illustrated which was everything we wanted Heavy Metal to be. But Marvel gotta Marvel so it's gone by 1986 as well but hey this Dark Horse Presents thing is really interesting. Then Eastman came along and kept the thing going but it was nowhere near its glory days (although when it was hitting it was hitting hard and his run had this weird duality of both trying and avoiding tits and ass shortcuts). And even that more or less waned by mid 2000s. The modern Heavy Metal relaunch had some promise due to Grant Morrison involvement but it only showed that Grant can't run a magazine long term - it wasn't bad, the stories were mostly good but it was oddly repetitive and after he left - pretty much everyone stopped writing about HMM and had no idea it was still soldiering on until a couple of days ago and i considered myself a HM nerd.
