‘I Love Boosters’ Star Poppy Liu on Working With Boots Riley, Trojan Horsing Social Commentary Into Films and ‘Hacks’ Ending

The actress notes that Riley has the ability to get audiences thinking about issues while entertaining them: “There's people that have an immediate allergic reaction to social commentary.”

Still finishing up the last few episodes of Hacks, and while I'm a fan, the social commentary is hardly "Trojan horsed". It's usually pretty front and center

you might be underestimating the average level of stupid/media literacy out there.

In the article, that comment is directed at Boots Riley, though to be fair I think he could only be accused of Trojan Horse level obfuscation by people who think anything with social commentary subtler than Hacks is a Trojan Horse.

I like Hacks a lot too (even if the final season was a bit of a low-stakes victory lap, it still made me laugh), but "boomer actually has to explore social justice with an open mind" is at least half the point of the show.

Even if the point is literal and direct, people will miscontrue it. If it's "sub"text at all, then it's basically a B-2 stealth jet to the average viewer.
