Valve and Apple are both credited for their efforts against piracy (in games and music, respectively) not by making it harder or less convenient to pirate, but to make it so much more attractive to buy legally. Both have done some morally and ethically questionable things over the years, but they showed the other industries how it's done — and their examples haven't been followed.
The people who make (/market, /sell) TV shows, movies, and sporting events aren't dumb. They could follow in the footsteps of others and eliminate piracy. The reason they aren't is because those piracy lawsuits, it's not about the money they generate, but the court precedents they set. It's about control. They have money. They want more, but control is not so easily attained.
