The PCIe 5.0 tax: Intel's Z990 chipset for Nova Lake runs hotter and uses more power despite shrinking

Why does a desktop PC need that many PCIe 5 lanes from the chipset? A GPU and a couple of SSDs can connect directly to the CPU. Nobody is running multiple GPUs in SLI anymore. Most other devices that you would use with a desktop probably only support PCIe 2 or 3.

Well, the answer is probably AI lol

There's only 24 lanes on Intel

16 for GPU

4 for m.2

4 for chipset (USB 3/4, wired/wireless networking, Sata III, and additional m.2 all share the same bandwidth from these 4 lanes)

AMD has 28, but it's 8 lanes to the chipset iirc.
