New Gaming Madness? - Chaos;Head Noah and the game I learned to love and hate

Have you ever hated and loved a video game at the same time? Or, perhaps, have you ever had a complicated relationship with one? Maybe it’s a game that has many flaws, yet manages to deliver fantastic moments often enough to make you rethink your opinion of it as you play it; for me, that game is Chaos;Head Noah, part of the Science Adventure series! Let's find out why!

I think how much you'll enjoy Chaos;Head is defined by one question: "Do you need to like the main character"?

Because Takumi is an asshole, but his massive flaws are what makes him a very interesting and unique main character. And the game also does a fantastic job in getting the player into his paranoid mindset.

Yup, he pretty much is! But that also makes him immensely unusual, and sometimes unusual ends up being better.

@blisscast@lemmy.world Taku was insufferable and the first chapter was rough, but the story picked up after that. I wrote a bit about it on my blog, but I had so many mixed feelings about him.

"He's pathetic. I have nothing but contempt for him. Oh no he's actually pathetic in a sad way—I think he needs help. I wanna smack him. Okay, Gigalomaniac!"

I went in knowing nothing of the series, but my girlfriend loves Steins;Gate and I wanted to play them in order. Maybe not the best approach in retrospect, but it didn't turn me off the other games.

You were very brave, it's not easy to start directly from Chaos;Head! Taku is a bit like that, and in the end I could even say I started liking him, but it took so long to get to that point XD

@blisscast@lemmy.world The horror and scifi combo helped a ton, in that regard. As did bouncing to other perspectives with more proactive characters.

Oh yes, as soon as you meet more characters, it starts getting better.

I have a love hate relationship with Witcher 3. Actually, I have a love hate relationship with the Witcher books, too.

I tried reading the first book years ago, but I couldn't get into it. Maybe I should give it another shot?

I've read 8 of them and it might seem crazy for someone who has read 8 books of a series to tell you not to bother, but uh, don't bother. There's better written fantasy out there.

I'll trust your word then :')

One of the most memorable VNs I ever read; can't wait for the translation of Chaos;Head Love Chu Chu!

I'm looking forward to it too! I recommend you buy Japanese copies of both Head and Child if you want to play them with the patch, just in case they randomly become super expensive :')

I should finish that game.

Then give it a try! :D
