I went to the RIJKSMUSEUM in Amsterdam recently and this painting will not get out of my mind. It is saddening and beautiful. From what i remember in the description of it, these are the sisters of the painter, and their mother was struggling with depression at the time.
I get "we said we don't want our picture taken" vibes from this.
Was there any extra context as to why was the mother depressed? I am curious
Being a woman in 1885 isn't enough?
If i remember correctly they only really say it in passing. > The mother was suffering from depression and would die three years after the painting. I tried looking for more context but couldnt find any 😔
She probably lost many babies.
Middle chick has a super-long right arm.
"Really, Jan? Pose for you?"
