Why Your New Car Is Nearly Impossible to Fix (And It’s Getting Worse)

The modern automobile is safer, cleaner, more efficient, and more technologically advanced than anything that came before it. Yet those improvements have come at a cost. For many owners, mechanics, and independent repair shops, that cost is repairability.

Electronics need to be documented with open access for diagnostics and repairs including schematics. Automakers are fighting this and trying to make it even more difficult to access existing data.

But I think it’s worth noting that is standard for a vehicle to hit 250-300000km without needing more than belts, brakes, and fluid, whereas the “wonderful” vehicles of time gone by would common crap out at 150.000km and need valve adjustments at 20000 while achieving power and efficiency numbers that are laughable.

Links to this site were shared around a few weeks ago - free repair manuals for most cars here:

Found the ones I needed on there, which were not even available to buy from the carmakers.

My last two cars (one current) I got the factory “manuals” in software from forums. Of course they’re fairly useless (“step 1: remove engine”) Haven’t been able to find one for my EV. Thanks for sharing; I will look for it there.

I would seed but I need to buy more storage and, well, AI.
