Atelier Karia: The Night Kingdom & the Guide of Memories - First Look

Interesting, looks like they completely replaced the (not very good 😅) crafting system from Yumia, usually sequels in the same universe try to keep similar systems. Hope they also put some work on battle system, it was flashy but not particularly fun, turned very easily into plain button mashing.

I wonder how the performance will be on the Switch 2, they recently released an upgrade pack for Yumia but looks like the performance is bad enough that people are recommending "just keep playing the Switch 1 version". Not surprising given how poorly optimized Yumia was in general, but gives me some concerns for this next gme.

Well, given the publisher it'll probably be a GCK so I won't be playing it anytime soon... hopefully by the time it goes on sale it'll have been patched into a decent shape.

It's direct sequel of Yumia? I thought it might a different game, since no Yumia in the name.

Yes, you see Yumia in the video around the 5min mark. Most atelier sequels swap the main character but have the previous protagonists as returning characters (usually in a mentor role).

Ryza is the main exception to this rule, all games in the "Secret" series have her in the leading role.

Interesting. I dropped Ryza but I liked the general gameplay. My issue was a sudden difficulty spike, which required me to go back and do lots of alchemy (requiring me to collect lots of stuff). Wasn't in mood for that at the time. I wonder if I should try Yumia instead.

"Collecting lots stuff and doing lots of alchemy" is part of the core gameplay of this series, so if you didn't enjoy that in Ryza you may have similar issues with the rest of the series.

That being said, Yumia is a rare game in the series with an open world map and a lot more focus on exploration, so it might work better for you.

It isn't that I didn't enjoyed that part, its just I didn't realise how much I had to do that and then hit a wall, and didn't want to do too much of that at once. I think starting with the right mindset wouldn't cause the problem, but I'll only know after trying.

Ah, I see. The solution for almost everything in Atelier is crafting, so you should be doing that constantly. I usually take a break every time I drop by the home base to see if I managed to unlock new recipes, and stop to create new gear whenever I get a new ingot or cloth.

I've saved these two images from Ryza 3 as a "why you should craft stuff" example. It shows a late-game character with their initial gear and with some reasonably optimized gear I made. It's a returning character from Ryza 1 so I shouldn't be a significant spoiler for you.

Wow, that's some difference!
