It genuinely would be a shame. This destruction of beautiful human culture is amongst the worst parts of war. I fully believe that Russia is doing it specifically because it opposes the notion of a rich and thriving Ukrainian culture separate from the Russian one

Maybe that's the point though. Get Russians to rally around the flag, misappropriate the money for reconstruction, get the sympathy of stupid westerners & easterners, rebuild it as a shrine to Putin.
