Ah I see you also have ADHD and executive dysfunction :D
Executive dysfunction is the primary symptom of ADHD so
Yep, that's what I was implying. Executive dysfunction is not exclusive to ADHD either.
Exactly. Just look at the current US presidential administration
People are made up of matter, in different proportions:
Electrons
Neutrons
Protons
Morons
It unable Vs unwilling. Trump has shown he's perfectly capable of motivating himself to do stuff. He just doesn't bother.
Laziness is sitting on the sofa watching TV, ignoring other required tasks.
ADHD is sitting the on the sofa watching TV, internally stressing over the tasks that need doing, but you just don't get up.
Externally they look almost identical, but the internal cause is quite different. Trump is lazy
FYI, the difference is what fucks up people with ADHD who are told they are lazy. The motivation methods for laziness don't work well on ADHD. Pre diagnosis, I thought I was lazy, because I couldn't reach my potential. The internal stress I put myself under actually caused me heart issues. They went away when I went into complete burnout post university. It took over 6 months for me to become even particularly functional, and I never fully recovered mentally.
Sorry for the rant, the comparison hit a nerve. ☹️
I was going for a joke about our government’s Executive branch and how dysfunctional it is.
That aside, I hear you. I have my own maladies that are invisible. I’m currently fighting with my employer just to get a quiet work space so I can be productive again. They’re forcing me to get a doctor to require it because they’re so ridiculous. They won’t enforce any kind of office etiquette (open office plan), so people yell and are incredibly rude all day every day.
After about two hours of that environment, I have switched context too many times to focus through the noise and movement.
Massively appreciated. I almost deleted my post before posting it.
Executive dysfunction is a bitch, but not actually too bad on its own. It's when you either can't control around it, or don't know you need/how too that it really fucks you over.
I definitely feel your pain on that one. My partner works in teaching had a similar issue (they also have ADHD). Their work were amazing. A quick comment to HR, and they got moved to a duel office, with someone of a similar mindset. They were proactive in trying to help more.
They've also (with their permission) started referring students with ADHD to them. Apparently just having someone in authority who just understands can make a huge difference.
We are clawing in some level of control. I just wish the process wasn't so slow, but it's improving. Hopefully you'll be able to figure out a solution, or jump to a company that actually recognises that accommodations help with productivity (and sanity), and so help the company too.
Thank you, friend!
Also: Happy Cake Day!
Np, and thank you! Apparently it's been 3 years since I jumped ship from Reddit.
I'm going to start saving all these posts like this that I resonates with then go talk to someone.
I express how much I can't think of examples when someone asks for an exsmple
ADHD is a bitch
Until something at work breaks and then you're fucking Seabiscuit all over that crisis response!
The worst feeling is feeling all of that but not being able to remember what the fuck I should be doing. Like I know I need to be doing something, and I should get off my ass and do it, but I can't even phathom what the fuck that thing is!
Then by the time you remember the thing, it's too late to do anything about it. Like if you have to go somewhere but it's already closed, or you have to start something (like defrosting food, or running the laundry) so it can be ready at a certain time later.
Me when I remember while I'm at work to do my adhd paperwork for my diagnosis next week. Then when I get home I forget about it.
It's why our microwave has post it notes all over it.
I found out it isn't being lazy if you don't enjoy the procrastination. It is executive dysfunction.
You guys have chips!?
I'm doing it right now. Someone please teach me to stop.
If you go do the thing, a random internet stranger will be proud of you!
Thank you, random stranger. I did the thing.
we're proud of you
Hooray!
Did you actually do the thing? Or are you just telling us you did the thing and are still procrastinating on doing the thing?
I'm a procrastinator, not a liar.
I can teach you, just give me a minute
If you listen to any comment on the internet, I swear to God you need to listen to this one. Go see a fucking psychiatrist and get a prescription. It will change everything for you.
What should I do to afford this?
Go live in Mexico
Stretches comfortably in Canadian
If you have reasonable insurance most will cover some of this
If you have reasonable insurance
gonna have to stop ya right there. USAUSA 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Have you considered getting a consult at gun point
I got myself to start doing things through ticketing/ incident responses
Split things into something:
- Problem description
- Root cause
- Immediate Actions / solution
- Corrective Actions
With checkboxes on the solution /corrective actions. Then I do the immediate actions
For example,
Laundry
- Problem description
- Laundry on floor
- Root cause
- No hamper
- Did not do laundry
- Immediate Actions / solution
- Find basket
- Collect clothes
- Wash clothes
- Corrective Actions
- Acquire hamper
- Create laundry schedule.
Each ticket is separate and gets moved from open to closed once complete so its not too many bullet points / checkboxes and a little less overwhelming. 3/4 are checkboxes.
It was a big step for me to say: „Fuck it! I‘m not gonna be productive anyway, I‘m gonna go for a walk and buy a lemonade or a coffee.“
Neurodiversity has entered the chat
Hey baby, that's my bag!
Use these feelings. Turn them upon themselves. Reframe it as your lack of productivity is making you eat less chips than is optimal, but you can let your chip zeal override your procrastination in its desire for chip-oriented satiation. Then, you're being productive at eating chips.
I like eating chips more than splinters i can't remove, so...no
That was today, minus the chips. Just staring while lying on the couch, wanting to do something, but not able. Sucks
I'll try again tomorrow
hehe
Dopamine farming socmed exacerbates this, too!
I'm pretty sure this post qualifies as a violation of my privacy, I'm doing this exact thing right now.
No, the worst feeling is when you step on a LEGO.
