A Glimpse of the Smallest Owl in the World

Since I posted photos of the second smallest North American Owl, I thought I should post a photo of the smallest owl in the world -- the Elf Owl. Roughly the size of a sparrow, it measures just 5 to 6 inches long and weighs about 1.5 ounces (less than a golf ball). A lot of cuteness in a very little package!

This nocturnal owl is SO small, scarcely larger than a small juice can at about 5.9 to 6.7 inches in length and weighs only 1.5 to 2.2 ounces. It is just slightly larger than the Elf Owl which is considered the smallest North American owl.
