A $200 ChatGPT subscription could cost OpenAI $14,000 if you actually used it to its full potential

Pretending tokens have cash value in the first place makes you a mark
Well, when you use tokens you are using energy. The token doesn't have value in and of itself. But that basically becomes a conversation of "what value does currency have".
In a material sense. Tokens are just a reflection of compute cost. You could have a literal person sitting in a room doing math problems each time you spend a "token". You would be paying for the value of the "computer". That labor has value.
In this sense the tokens are being spent on an extremely inefficient computation to yield text on a screen that may or may not be helpful to the user. But, the cost of that text generation is in the labor to extract oil, to extract minerals and rare earth metals, water infrastructure, electric infrastructure. Even for the labor of the software developers that build the AI systems.
Paying for a token is just paying for that labor value. The token represents that in the same way currency does.
Now, we can all use currency to buy mud pies. Our current economy being built up on mud pies doesn't mean there is no value. Currently we value mud pies. The mud pies might not have actual material use or value. But, currently we are puting tons of labor and resources into building those mud pies. Those resources and labor have value. That's where the tokens cost is derived from; even if the tokens just give us mud pies in return.
Ahhhhh, but it isn't labor, is it? It's gambled resources with no inherent value, because there is no assured outcome. So the cash value of a "token" is ???, calling it labor instead of extrusion makes you a mark.
Resources are just another state of labor value. The resources need extraction, the resources need refining, etc. All value is derived from labor. There is no value in a resource without labor. Labor makes those resources valuable by making it available for use.
A prompt doesn't appear magically when you spend a token. A large amount of labor and resources went into the GPU that produces the output. That's my point.
A "token" is just a currency conversion. You're using USD (or other currency) to buy tokens to spend on getting access to the computation produced by the resources and means of production that are controlled by datacenter owning capitalist.
Yeah bro and I pay my rent in lottery tickets
I can't have a conversation with the unshared thoughts in your head. I'm not gonna assume what you even mean here if you're not gonna spend more than a sentence to try to argue your vague analogy.
You disagreed that it "isn't labor it is resources". I described that resources are just another form of labor value. Do you agree? Do you disagree?
Make some minor effort if you're gonna respond.
I'm gonna go on a limb and say that the guy with the username 'BigTuffAI' never intended to have a serious conversation related to AI anyway, and only wanted to bitch about how they hate AI.
I understand skepticism and consternation towards AI, but some people just don't wanna have a real discussion and just wanna bitch.
True. But I wasn't even discussing the AI part of it. I guess some people are so dense that they live in a world of binary positions. Disagreeing with their idea of "value" suddenly means I am pro AI or something in their mind. It's kind of fascinating in a way.
Your premises aren't correct enough to continue talking to you dude, I'm not going to unwind your assumption matrix for free instead of playing video games
I'd be surprised if you could even restate state what "my premise" is; let alone refute it. Enjoy Roblox.
Buddy, you've talked yourself into thinking a token is currency conversion. You're a mark. Just go download polymarket and whatever VPN you heard about on your podcast and get to work enriching the rich.
You sound like you have big feelings and small words
Best reason I've ever seen to sign up. 🤣 🤣 🤣
You have to actually use it though, and that helps increase the company's imaginary value, and hurts the environment.
True.
"If there was a button that bankrupted a bunch of assholes but added tons of carbon to the atmosphere every time you pressed it, etc." is a fun thought experiment, but not so much fun in reality
How much does it cost them if I use the free version to its maximum potential?
So here is the problem. What these companies are doing is trying to sustain the company until the computing cost comes down. In other words, as time passes these companies thinks that the capital cost will come down for data centers, and operarional cost can be covered through subscription cost.
These so called rich investors will do their best to keep the bubble from bursting. I felt there was a coordinated effort from wall street to prevent the GameStop shorting to do more damage. Similar things are going on related to AI is what I feel.
Movements like occupy wall street, infact occupy every such abomination around the world is what we need. Eat.
A KitKat is 2 dollars, a box of 40 is 30 dollars. Walmart is losing 10 dollars each time you buy a box!!!!!
hey, ChatGPT. Write me a script that wastes as OpenAI as much money as possible on my subscription.
best business ever
They make it up in volume…
Sounds like an enormous waste of money and resources...
