Lionel Messi scores first World Cup hat-trick to lead Argentina past Algeria in sensational showing: Live updates, reaction

Messi, 38, became the joint-leading goalscorer in men's World Cup history as Argentina won 3-0 in Kansas City.

He is pretty funny to watch these days. Saves all his energy for the moments in attack where he can make a real difference; for the rest of the game he is walking or often just standing not even watching the play. Few other players in the world could get away with such little effort off the ball, but he's still so good when he gets the ball that it's absolutely worth it for him and his team.

Thank you for this fun insight into a sport that I have no interest in, but many around me do

Is there anyone left who is actually disputing that he is the greatest of all time?

Cristiano Ronaldo fans?

I guess there might still be some delusional ones left. I would hope even Christiano fans are able to recognise Messi is greater at this point, but you're probably right.

Portuguese here. I always said Messi was the better one. But the majority of people tell me i am just envious of Ronaldo's fortune.

The way i really see it:

Messi is talent embodied.
Born with it. Barely any effort needed.

And Ronaldo is sheer willpower and determination to be what Messi is without the effort he has to put in it.

One is biological. The other a machine.
One loves to play. The other is just putting numbers in excel.

My favorite after all this said, is Ronaldinho.
"Joga Bonito".

There is zero doubt Messi is an unbelievable player; however, if you saw the game yesterday you noticed that all attacks either terminated with a pass to him or they just folded back.

Algeria must have been an easier target for Argentina (compared to others coming up in the tournament) but it was clear they were feeding every chance to Messi

People joke that Argentina is "Messi + 9 pitbulls", but it's kinda true. The other players do all the running for him and rely heavily on him to create and score. As I said in another comment, he is so good that it's a game plan that works for them, but you do wonder what happens if he picks up an injury.

exactly!!! he should have received a red yesterday (as per commentators), that's 2 games out, what then?
