Trump’s DHS Announces Raids on Antifa Cells in Minnesota

11h 36m ago by lemmy.today/u/sanitation in politics from www.newsweek.com

Antifa cells = Any one not in lockstep with the administration

Apart from the injustice from this obvious fascist move, some observations:

  • This was done by DHS, not the FBI or local law enforcement. This is also almost certainly intentional, to continue to position the DHS as a law enforcement replacement. They have the budget and most convenient excuse to ignore constitutional protections since they are framed as border enforcement. This signals the DHS and Mullin will continue to expand beyond border enforcement and act with more impunity as Trump's (i.e., Stephen Miller's) personal regime enforcers.
  • The focus of the charges is nebulous stalking and conspiracy to impede allegations. There's really no limit to how broadly these can apply to protestors and observers. Because this is happening now...
  • The timing further supports a plan to ramp up ICE activity over the summer and fall leading to the midterms. The goals here likely remain to both (a) create a situation where lawful protest instead becomes a basis to invoke the Insurrection Act and station ICE agents and (b) create a test case for detaining opposition figures at key times.
  • Newsweek using the terminology "Antifa cells," a designation implying an organized terrorist group when "Antifa" is of course not an organized group and is really just what the right calls protestors, reminds us that the media will continue to legitimize these actions.

DHS claims to not need a warrant within 100 miles of any border, defined as land, maritime, or international airport. 90% of the population lives within that area.

Yup, exactly.

Anyone targeting organizations because they are antifa/anti-fascist can only be fascist. And America learned how to deal with fascists in the 1940's, and they should be treated no differently today. No. Differently.

America had Nazi rallies right before that. Don't give them praise. They dont deserve it.

There doesn't exist a sizable country without some Nazis. The US majority made a decision that we murder Nazis. They deserve praise for that.

If the presence of individual Nazis, nazi groups, nazi political parties, is a condemnation on the entire country regardless of actions taken against Nazis, then I have bad news for dozens of countries

America certainly has a fucking Nazi problem today. The White House and its affiliates are filled with them. But don't discount the role that America had fighting the Nazis and the rest of the Axis at the time. This country was never perfect, but it was progressing. It's very rapidly lost is way within my lifetime. I hope to see it recover back to where we were and continue up progress into the future. Shitting on some of the few good things this country has done does not help that happen.

Saying that gets a site wide ban from Reddit. I'm wondering if that's going to happen here.

Well, nothing here is "site wide," so no

Desperately trying to get an ICE agent killed right now so they can try to fuck with elections.

They're fucking desperate.

Hm, why is it that the conservatives hate groups that are anti-fascist so much?

These are the whiners that always howl when anyone compares them to the Nazis.

Granny's crocheting group won't know what hit 'em

All 15 defendants are alleged to be members or associates of the same core organization, Twin Cities Direct Action (TCDA), which was later renamed Direct Action Minnesota (DAMN).

Nice

On January 7, during one of these operations in a residential neighborhood, Renee Nicole Good was shot and killed by an ICE agent. On January 24, Alex Pretti, a nurse, was shot dead in the street by a Border Patrol agent.

They misspelled "kidnapping attempt" and "murdered"

charged with conspiracy to impede federal agents

Since when is "defending the constitution" a crime?

So basically any house in Minnesota? Because, yeah, we're almost all opposed to fascism here.
