Usenet retention can be an issue, I think some providers have a cut off of over 15 years though.

Admittedly its more popular now so likely to have more modern stuff yes.

We have it disabled currently, but we're looking at enabling it.

The risk comes from the mod log displaying content that is illegal - say someone made a comment describing how to build a bomb, that is probably illegal in most jurisdictions and I'd need to remove it. But if the modlog then keeps a copy of the removed comment for transparency with the full text - then I'm still displaying that content and on the hook for it. I can't turn it off for lemmy sadly, so its a big risk. But we're checking what piefed displays and will turn the modlog on if we're happy we'd be ok :)
