Samsung is building floating data centers on ships, and it's already got regulatory approval
4d 15h ago in hardware from www.techspot.comPeople on oil rigs aren't necessarily the most skilled in their field. They still make well above median income because they put up with shit like this. Im sure something similar would develop. Would you sign up for a 12 week contract if it paid $60k?
Probably like an oil rig rotation. You live and work for a contracted period of time on the boat, then you cycle off with someone else every few months or so.

5d 16h ago in me_irl from lemmy.todayThe north bay is not countryside. All you need to do is head less than an hour east into the central valley. Merced/Methdesdo/Fresno/Sacramento could be anywhere between Kansas and Texas.
If you REALLY want to push it, you could try saying the coast between half moon bay and Santa Cruz. Thats pretty rough and country. But definitely not North Bay Area. That's about as gentrified as you can get around these parts. Tiburon is so rich I'm pretty sure you get in trouble for talking about it on the internet.
Three of four Republicans who forced the release of the Epstein files are now out of jobs
6d 4m ago in politics from www.cnn.comI cant believe Magic the Gathering is in a lineup with semi normal looking people.
The rational for Ben doing what he did was that the family had already spent 18 months and tens of thousands of dollars doing things "the right way" in court and got to a point where the court told them they needed to spend another $60k to get an injunction and maybe in 3 or 4 more years actually recover something.
Instead, the family turned to a YouTube interested in the story and told him to blow it up. Combine viral videos with genuinely concerning actions on the part of police, and the story did, in fact, blow up.
The moral here is that "doing the right thing, the legal way" got this family fucked and going loud with social media got the job done.

6d 21h ago in me_irl from lemmy.todayYou know, I can see a lot of hockey arena in the CGI stuff at the end. He must have talked about your set design to the rest of the set crew.
That's actually one of the few worthwhile "twists" from either the book or the movie in my opinion. I like the idea of a past "earth" in the sense of our modern one being so thoroughly beaten and destroyed that it is no longer recognizable. Taking a "primitive" human and showing them how great humanity once was is one of the cooler ways to reflect on the work of mankind, imo.
Not one mention of Battlefield Earth? Really?
Yes, it's a terrible movie. Nobody watching this (except maybe John Travolta) ever thinks its a good movie. But it is.
You just have to shut your brain off entirely. Johnny alien (travolta) runs around like an English major high on bath salts. Thousand year old military tech works flawlessly. Humans are so dumb they literally cant tell gold ore and solid gold ingots apart. The dumb humans manage to build and deploy a nuclear weapon in 7 days. Its so horrifically, nut crushingly stupid that it swings all the way around to comedy.
This morning I filed a grievance for retaliation
